Oh joy... First Day of School.   This means at least 50% of my support staff will be off all day.  They started turning in their leave last week.   I have not figured out why it takes a parent all day to take their children to their first day of school.   Most of my staff have children who are aged 9 - college, none of them have any that would qualify as Pre-K or even the lower grades in Elementary school, so why they have to be absent all day from work is beyond me.    With the beginning of school, brings open season for all sorts of excuses.... "I need to stay home with a sick child",  "School bus ran late, therefore, I am late" and then there's the dreaded "Teacher in Service Days" where both mother and father have to take off to tend to their children.   Over the last couple of years, I have found that fathers are taking off alot too, to stay at home with their sick children.   My mother went into the school with me my first day of first grade, after she escorted me to my classroom, she left.  That was the first and only time she ever escorted me into school which was sweet, but after about 3rd grade, most of the kids in my class found it embarrassing if a parent walked into school with them.

As a side note, most of the parents who are absent today from work are the same ones that invariably call in "they can't get out of their driveways" when we get a few flakes of snow or the power went out at their house when we get a thunderstorm.

Let the excuces begin....

When I was over the floor of the warehouse, I had the same problems you're naming. Now, not that I'm not sympathetic to parents and their kids, hell, I AM a parent with a kid (who always comes first). BUT, like you said, once the child get's up in age, you shouldn't have to take off as much for as many things.

Luckily now that I'm over the office, there's only one other person with children, so no real big loss if they have to take off or be late.

And you're right, the same people that have to take a whole day off to take their kids to school are the same ones who take the whole day off due to two flakes falling from the sky.

I am glad I am not the only person who feels this way.

I have two in school...3rd and 4th grade. I walked them to their classes this morning, dropped off their supplies (i was busy on supply drop off night)...left and went to breakfast with my parents and was still home by 9. i wonder what those parents are doing. Maybe they stay home to enjoy the first day of quiet. It's an odd feeling but it sure is nice today...lol

People like to take advantage of situations.

Those that use any excuse not to come to work are being disrespectful of their fellow team members.

I took my kids to their first day of shcool when they first started and that was it. I've worked with one that would show up late because he had to drop the kid off, then leave early to pick up. And his wife was a stay at home mom!! Instead of being fired he was given a promotion. Go figure.

A lot of people cry alot on their kids' first day of school. Maybe they are just sad. Are they requesting vacation days or just expecting you to let them off with pay?

It's just an excuse to have off all day. My only question is........did these parents to off during summer to be at home with their "sick" kids? I bet not!

I still want to know if they are using their vacation days or just wanting stuff for free. If they are using their vacation days let them take them when they want. Sometimes I take one just to go take care of stuff.

So what if they want to take the day off when their kids start school, if they have Vacation time whats the big deal? You dont know what situations they are dealing with. And also different areas deal with diff situations as far as the weather goes. Just cuse you got light flakes doesnt mean they got light flakes.Or just cause youre power didnt go out doesnt mean theres did the same. And most kids dont get sick during the summer cause they arent in class rooms with other sick kids swapin germs. And yes I do understand some people do take advantage of the situation cause I work with some too but not ALL people with kids are like that.

Not all parents are like that, however, the group I have written my blog about, are. We had the other set of parents, who came in an hour late, they took their kids to school this morning and made sure they got to their classes ok, then they came to work. They will not be charged for being late. It's the ones who have to take off all day for such a ridiculous excuse. You are right, their vacation time is theirs to use how they want to, we don't require that they say "why" they are taking off, they should just say "I want the day off". I don't write a short story at the bottom of my leave request and CERTAINLY wouldn't write "First Day of School" on one, it is ridiculous.
The other 50% of staff, most of which are parents too, do not demonstrate this sort of behavior... but then again, if THEY take off, we really miss them because they work :) The ones who use their kids as excuses aren't effective, even when they are here.

Our firm once had a receptionist that had a 5-yr old daughter. One year FW ISD decided to announce they would be closed the following due to expected inclement weather, the bad weather didn't arrive.
Our receptionist had to take the day off because her daughter's day care closes whenever FW ISD closes. She went to the mall & shopped that day. She was quite upset that the company 'punished her for having a child' when she was told she would have to use a vacation day for it. I mentioned that she was attempting to punish ME for NOT having a child. We eventually had to fire her ~ this was not an isolated incident.

I don't see a problem if the person has vacation time or comp time and has requested the time off in advance. I think her's is about those that use any excuse to be off work with or without the time.

Teacher in-service days are a nightmare for those needing a sitter for just those days. I guess I was lucky I knew people who would watch my kids at a moments notice.

I've been iced in where I live, but Dallas (Where I work) had little to no ice. Then I've been iced in my building on a couple occassions. That is one area where they are told to use good judgement.

1. I have a headache. This excuse is used every Monday morning by the same employee. DON'T DRINK SO MUCH ON SUNDAY'S THEN!

2. My dog had puppies last night and I need to make sure she is alright. Did you have to deliver them? Maybe you should drop them off at the Vet ON YOUR WAY IN!

3. My car broke down on the way in. Although this can be a legitimate excuse, it doesn't hold water when the caller ID shows the phone number to the company owned house, located behind the building and we know you are seeing the caretaker who lives there. (He also called out)

4. My stomach hurts, I ate something bad last night. This too can be a legitimate excuse ONCE A YEAR! Not every week.

5. I can't find my keys. Classic excuse. Do you have a spare set? I can't find those either. Following day: I found them in the toy box, the baby must have put them there. OK blame a baby that can't walk yet.

6. My wife forgot to wake me up when she left for work. WHAT? You can't get up on your own?

7. I have the flu. Again another legitimate excuse, except when 4 others call in with the flu and who were all spotted in the same house playing POKER?

8. My daughter is throwing up I need to take her to the doctor. Very legitmate excuse, but why did the school nurse call looking for you several hours later? Seems your daughter was in school, you weren't at work and no one could find you!

That's right PA- everyone should use their time as they wish, however, there are people in every organization that abuse their leave time right up to being totally out and have to take time off without pay and then be upset because their pay check is short. It is an epidemic around here, the same people, the same excuses and come the Holidays they won't have time to take off with their families because they have gobbled it up with some of the excuses you have listed above... .then they are mad because the people who do come to work and do not abuse their time, can take off and enjoy the holidays with their families... Paid.

Gun I had a receptionist that had issues like yours. Her daughter was always her excuse, she always had to stay home and keep her daughter, meanwhile, she had a good for nothing husband, who didn't work- why he couldn't care for the child is beyond me, but she eventually was terminated too but not for attendance issues, in addition to her poor work ethic she had a problem stealing things. That is what cost her, her job. Now neither of them are working and she can stay at home all she wants to.

I found out the recpt. we had got really angry at me when I told her that I, frankly, didn't give a hoot what she did with her kid. Told her she could leave her duct-taped up in the closet all day for all I cared. Maybe that was a LITTLE insensitive??

Hello! Isn't the Metroplex great? I was born and raised in Dallas and parents moved me to "the country" (Mesquite) in the 70's. Mesquite was far enough from Dallas to be the country but close enough to be convenient. I have seen this small town turn into a big city that continues to have small town charm. To experience a taste of this charm come on out in the Spring and enjoy the street festival and Rodeo Parade celebrating the opening of the Rodeo season, grab some tickets to the Rodeo and see first hand what the fuss is all about, stop in at Mesquite BBQ on any Friday or Saturday night or just cool your heels on the town square and enjoy the sounds of the Mesquite Opry and the occasional lazy train rolling through town. The spirit of the Mesquite High School Football games will take you back to a special place in your life, the sound of the bands, the trips to the snack bar, the sense of community coming together- nothing else like it! People still know their neighbors in Mesquite, watch out for one another in Mesquite, and proudly support our troops, police & fire departments, who not only serve and protect our community, but are also our friends and neighbors. Mesquite is the place for me!
