My daughter is a P.R. Person and as you know I was in the broadcasting and advertising businesses for many years, so I am aware of all the clever ways you can get "free advertising". But for far too many small business owners, the simple news release is ALWAYS ignored by the "news media", because the business isn't trendy enough. Not so for businesses like Starbucks. For the last several weeks, this trendy place has gotten the freebies by simply forwarding a news release. There was nothing Earth-shattering about any of them, but the media types just couldn't resist.

Now, this issue in itself is not a huge story, but I would like to see your thoughts on the subject. There may be people who could lend some wisdom to small businesses who could use some field-leveling. I know how politicians and Hollywood types get publicity, so please don't suggest they follow suit.

Thanks, bloggers!

aGodthing, perhaps this isn't an appropriate question--but where does your daughter do PR work? Ignore the question if you like, I'll understand.

I'm a journalism major and would like to dabble in PR. I think it would be a good experience.

As far as the field leveling and giving small businesses publicity ... well, I would say they give it where it is due. How many people would a mom and pop shop affect if it shut its doors for 3 hours to re-train a couple of employees? Maybe a few customers, but that's it.

As you well know from being in the business, the media reports the news--they aren't about giving free publicity or leveling playing fields.

p00frog: Yes. The media goes by the laws of averages, but under the old N.A.B. rules, they had an obligation to weigh even the trendy stuff. I don't wish to burst any career bubbles, but broadcast "News" is little more than a P.R. game. This, though, is an alternative to "newspapers". A study of major city newspapers 4 years ago found that they averaged 54 pages. Out of those, only 1.5 pages had actual hard news, exclusive of any opinion.
I'm sorry I cannot divulge where my daughter works. I will consider if there may be a way to forward it to you another way. I am glad to see that we have fresh journalism students here!

As a funny side-note: A while back, one of the local TV stations did a quick story on a small business that did something unusual. They got the freebie because they had a "green" angle. They operate a used cardboard box store! My wife and I had to mail some big, odd-sized stuff, so we went to the Fort Worth store to check them out. We rushed to get there before they closed, then saw a note on the store. They were closed, because the only employee available was sick! I still appreciated the angle they took advantage of.

p00frog: Though I risk looking like I'm just commenting on my own blog, I am curious about the "frog" part of your handle. Would that happen to be a reference to TCU? If so, I may have a way for you to find out more about my daughter.

Well, I wish the "frog" had to do with TCU, but it doesn't. TCU is way too expensive and hardcore for me. I'll be a Maverick at UTA in the fall.

But I do know that Six Flags snags a lot of their PR people from TCU ...

frog: I would be the last to judge you for going where you can. The "God" part of my handle, as you might suspect, does have to do with my faith, and I believe God has all of us where we are for a reason. So...the next logical question: what DOES the "frog" stand for?

hmmm, good points to consider. Thanks.

As for the name, here is the history: years ago, when AOL instant messenger was just becoming popular, a buddy of mine told me to sign up for an account. Of course, all the standard names were taken, so for whatever reason he threw down p00frog. It's stuck ever since ... and people love it, so I keep it.

I'm about as involved as one can be in my community. I live suburban life through the families I minister to.I endured 27 years as a broadcaster, and in that time I learned to appreciate the power one can have in the newsroom. I have also seen that power abused. ...So I blog!
