Applewood's Blog

There is a dead zone larger than the size of New Jersey in the Gulf of Mexico, just off the coast of Texas and Louisiana.  A dead zone is an area where the water lacks enough oxygen to sustain life.

What has caused this are the polutants that are being drained into the gulf by the Mississippi river.  Where are the polutants coming from?  They are coming from states like Iowa where the huge corporate farms of Cargill and  ADM are growing corn and soy beans and then dumping their wastes into the tributaries of the Mississippi.

As our government continues to push fuel made from corn down our throats instead of the much more efficient sugar beet or sugar cane, just remember the power of the lobbyists from these two corporations.  We get higher food prices, higher fuel prices, and very questionable atmospheric benefits by using corn to create ethanol.  Oh, and let's not forget where this blog started, these companies also continue to kill the Gulf of Mexico.

Once again this is NOT a Dem or Rep issue as some partisans may want to claim, it's a bought and paid for Congress that's at issue.  We need to vote them all out, even if they are good at the moment.  Changing majorities has gotten us nowhere.

Applewood,I'm a stauch Republican but I sure as heck won't be voting for the likes of Sen.Kay Bailey Hutchenson ever again.

I've witnessed first hand how those whom we vote into office suddenly turn their backs on the people that voted them into office. And what's even worse is that most of them haven't the faintest idea of what the "Real" problems are outside of their high priced Washington D.C. offices.

' with liberty and justice for all ' boy did that ever get lost in this country.

Washington is nothing but a rat race, and the rats have won.

I haven't heard anything about which you wrote, so I will refrain from commenting. But, turning corn into fuel is STUPID. We have great fuel.. it's called OIL DRILl FOR IT, REFINE IT HERE.... not in the mid east.

Let's see, pollutants from Iowa are causing a dead zone in the gulf, yet the rivers that are carrying the pollutants are teaming with life. That makes sense.

bilmorbc - The Missouri and Mississippi both are incredibly polluted, and the dead zone in the gulf is no new thing either. Go to NPR's list of programming for yesterday and read the transcript. There is another one out there from a few months ago on the pollution created by the mega farms that is flowing into the rivers. I take no offense to your comment, but I do suggest that you do some research on te subject. It is quite real.

I know people who fish both rivers and eat the fish.If you buy catfish grown in Louisiana and Mississippi so do you. They use the river water on the farms.

I'm not sure what causes it, but the rest of what you wrote is spot-on. Why is corn the veggie-du-jour in Congress? Money.

***Off Topic***

You were so right on in a comment you posted today. I read it to my husband and he said, "who IS this person???"

The church has never prospered in an environment where the world tolerated it. Historically, without persecution religion begins to compromise and the members become almost indiscernable from those who are ungodly.

"The Church (note the capital C) is alive and well. It is without spot or blemish and will remain so, as long as it recognizes that it IS being persecuted. In The Revelation to John, it says that the prophets were slain before the alter. The persecution against the Church, is not coming from the logical and most obvious source (the secular world)it is coming from religion itself. The children of God need to obey the Word and come out from among them and be a separate people."

WOOOOOOOOW!!!!

I am wondering if it isn't caused by the huge amount of debris and chemicals from Katrina. There are many petrochemical facilities along that part of the Gulf and during the storm many were damaged. Just the wood and insulation and paint from buildings could be a huge component. But, I don't think it's specifically anything anyone can do anything about except monitor it for growth. The ocean can heal itself, and even after large oil spills, nature can return. We certainly don't want to add to the situation, but we also don't have any business going off half-cocked trying to fix something that we really cannot fix.

All,

I usually don't want to regurgitate news commentaries because they are usually filled with bias or are trying to manipulate data to make a point, but in this case I have listened intently to interviews over the past six months or so (all on NPR) on the subject of the megacorporate farm discharges into the tributaries that feed the Missouri and the Mississippi and the refusal of the Feds to enforce the clean water act. This is being litigated right now. Also, the dead zone in the Gulf has consistently been attributed to this polution.

Who fishes and eats fish from the Missouri and Mississippi is completely unknown to me, nor do I make any assertions in that regard.

Grace, I appreciate your comments. I grieve for those who have been deceived by the cares of this world as propagated by the church through its insistence that stay busy trying to clean what is by definition filthy (the world). Jesus never asked us to do that. He asked us to be Light and to be about the Father's business. He was very discerning about who he ministered to, because He discerned hearts and did not judge the outward appearance or behavior. Most of us have been taught that we can't do that, which is absolutely untrue. God looks at the heart, and He has given us both the power and responsibilty to do the same.

Applewood,

It is reported on NPR. NPR is not exactly what I would label as fair and balanced. However, if large agrabusiness is dumping ANYTHING untreated into rivers, then what in the heck are those environmentalists doing about it? They normally immediately file lawsuits to get them to stop, and the judge will normally impose an injunction.

Do cities dump untreated sewage into the rivers? I don't think so. A business would have to comply or face severe penalty.

I still agree with you that our elected folks are the problem and that we will need to deal with it soon, if not yesterday.

Drop our Representatives into the Gulf, and tell them the pollution is tax money, they'll get rid of it in no time !!!

Marks the environmentalists are suing using the clean water act as the basis. The problem is that the way the act is written it is unclear whether the feds have jurisdiction over the tributaries. I agree with you about NPR. That is why I listen to it. I want to hear how the leftys think. This subject however, seems to be pretty well reported.

I read The New Republic, NYT, Dallas Morning News, WaPo, and other left-leaning outposts often enough. I can't listen to talk radio of any type.

No control over tributaries? Those lawyers should be able to prove cause and effect from sources emptying into the rivers.
