What has happened to our country?  When did the Bill of Rights become a tool for abuse and dishonor?

It is generally accepted that people have the right to pursue happiness in this country so long as that pursuit does not interfere with any other's right to do the same thing.  This common civility and mutual respect for others is generally accepted behavior.  Why does this same type of thinking not apply to the right of self expression?

Politicians and the media outlets are saying just about anything to achieve their desired goals.  Their speech includes innuendo, slander, and disrespect.  When a country sinks so far that legitimate debate about opposing points of view is put aside in favor of public accusation, falsehood, and disrespect then the citizens are left to form opinions without the benefit of the truth.

If we continue to abuse the right of free speech by speaking in this way, then the loss of this right cannot be far behind.  The politicians who resort to name calling, innuendo, and distortion to make their points should know that there is a cost.  If they cannot act with honor, respect, and civility then they have NO right to expect to be treated any differently.  Citizens are no different.

Resolving differences one on one is a thing of the past.  Resolving issues face to face requires courage.  It is actually easier to hang all the dirty laundry out in the public for all to see.  We wonder why our youth hold adults in contempt.  We are amazed that there is no respect for the military, the police, the fire departments, the churches.  It is because there is no honor or respect in the words being spoken by our media or our leaders.

I have no issue with politicians slugging it out in committee or on the floor of the houses  of congress, but why does it have to be done in the media?  Let the results speak for themselves.  I do not want, nor do I think most of the people (and the rest of the world)want to see our politicians acting like school yard bullies, tattle tails, and hoodums so that they can get their way.  This behavior undermines the respect that we once enjoyed in the world.  It isn't doing a whole lot for the next generation of Americans either.

All true words, but fact is, political debates have always gotten 'rough'. But the discourse, now, does seem reprehensible, when elected members of the House and Senate propagate lies, slander and defamation.
These people, although very low in more character, have been elected. All we can do is call them on their words and actions, and pray they will be removed from office, via the ballot box. But, look how long ole Ted Kennedy ahs been there, doesn't give one much hope, and sadly, many people don't care, except what the newest IPhone will have. You get the country you settle for...

Many people can not successful debate nor stand to hear those with opposing views, thus, name calling and slander, but these Senators should have SOME SHAME. Evidently, they don't.

Applewood & Chardoney,

Good points by both of you. It seems to have gotten to the point that virtually all politicians' mouths have gotten in the way of promoting any good cause for this country. Campaign speeches are mere cautionary tales and the only way to vote for a candidate is to peruse their Congressional voting records or review their political backgrounds (such as Bush's governorship of Texas) to determine what the candidates actually stand for.

I think much of it reflects society's acceptance and even its expectations of ridicule on a personal level. I know that previous campaigns were quite as aggressive, but with the Internet and mass media, we see more of it up close. People as a general rule just aren't as civil as they used to be. Too many folks equate their right to speak with their right to be rude. Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose. There are such things as limits. It would be nice to see those in play again.

You are so right. Also though, it should be noted that only CITIZENS should have these rights. Some twist the Constitution to suit them. For example, Separation of church and state only meant the federal government would not finanically support the chuch. Not that you could not pray on government property. Or that they would condem your chritianity.

It isn't about the country. It is all about power, party, and money.

The good of the country and the American citizen figure way down the list of things that either party cares about, it seems to me.

you are so right there cjl. As long as they live with power and die rich, they could care less about the country. I so wish that the average people could get organized one time. We could all get together and vote out every single incumbent politician in the country. Maybe that would send the word we have had enough! If there is anyway we could get the peole to pull together I wish i knew what it was.
