We've been down this road before, right? But this time thank goodness for the disruption of the alleged TERROR PLOT out of the U.K. to blow up U.S.-bound planes in mid-flight using explosives disguised as drinks and other common liquid products.
U.S. authorities have now banned the carrying of liquids onto flights..forcing people to unpack their carry-on bags on
the floor in the middle of terminals to remove the prohibited
items...one after the other. Some travelers squeezing makeup, sunscreen and other toiletries into their checked baggage, where liquids were permissible...as the airport security checkpoint line snakes longer and longer and longer. And people without checked bags or those who had already given their luggage to their airline...having to throw out the banned items--things like lotions, lipsticks, drinking water, hair gel, perfume, etc.

(BTW, WHAT'S ALLOWED YOU ASK---Baby formula and medications...which have to be presented for inspection at security checkpoints.)

SO NOW THAT OUR AIRPORT/AIRLINE FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS LIST GETS LONGER..WHAT DO YOU THINK? ARE WE OVERREACTING WITH THE BANS? OR ARE THESE RESTRICTIONS IMPERATIVE FOR OUR SAFETY?

Until it is leftup to the private companies ( the airlines themelves) to be responsible for the security on their planes this will never move towards a legit solution.
It is left up to the taxpayers/government where it of course adds to the entanglement of "red tape."

There is only one real test of the question are we overreacting. If nothing happens then a lot of people will say we over reacted. If we do nothing and something happens these same people will demand to know why nothing was done. We really have no way to know if an attack has been prevented. We only know when one takes place. How many people would have gladly submitted to any type of inspection on 9/11/01 if they KNEW what could happen? That is the question. There is no answer, we cannot give up everything but what do we give up?

Yes, we are. Just like when we let the gov't take over airline security, when they outlawed fingernail clippers, pocket knives, nail files, etc.

It isn't that difficult to tell if that bottle has a drink or an explosive chemical in it!

Baron trust me you are not overreacting. As a True Brit, I advise you to take every precaution there is in effect.

This is far more serious than many can even believe, We have every reason to be on full alert.

Having spoken to my family in Britain today, I am extremely disturbed.

I shall be posting in a while. It saddens me immensley what is happening.

Keep Alert, Keep safe.

Obviously terrorist still see commercial air flights as a high priority target, and see security as being lax. Crashing planes full of Americans would have a chilling effect on air travel, and the economy- just what the terrorist want.

It seems to me most of what passes for airport security is nonsense- going though a lot of wasted motion to make us feel good. Taking away nail clippers and giving us plastic knives is not the answer!

Israel has been dealing with terrorist a long time. I am sure they have some effective solutions we need to be looking at. It wont be pretty, but it may be the only effective way.

its been an under-reaction to not have allowed Israel to bomb tehran/damasacus some time ago.
Would they have 100% stopped the bad guys.
Dont know.
I know Japan stopped kamakazi attacks after we stopped them.
Its not nice but war neveris and I ay since innocent people are going to die it needs to be their people not ours

Hi Baron,
I appreciate what you write here. Just wanting to put my two cents out there..... Had our nation not taken the precautions we have already there would have been more tragedy by now. Our men and women that work to keep us safe have ruined plots to cause more tragedy on our soil. Unfortunately we are not privy to all the incidents they have prevented. I pose a question to anyone. Would you rather be able to say yes I went overboard on protection (in the light of nothing happening)? or would you rather say.......I never thought this could happen? (in the light of yet another horrific tragedy)
I for one will give up many luxuries and even rights to protect myself and my family. If it means getting rid of nail polish remover...so be it.
Take Care Baron Your a cool guy!!

Your points on the time factor involved in determining whether precautions work is well taken. And to that end I remind us all that the terrorists don't seem to work on a TIME SCHEUDLE per se. They don't seem to be as observant of or focused on certain western holidays/anniversaries/and other significant dates as we Americans are. In other words when they succeed in attacking, for the them the TIME IS RIGHT! And you have to believe that the terrorists don't necessarily look at the disruption of this attempt at attacking as being a failure; but more a test run in and of itself to be revamped and unfortunately rerun. Talk about learning from mistakes...

Baron-What you say is very true. In retrospect the 9/11 plan happened in small increments over a number of years. I am sure the British intelligence had to wait for probably cause just as our police and security forces have to do. They waited to make sure they had the evidence to make charges stick. That they did so just before a run through is amazing. I have heard that there have been HUNDREDS of similar threats, although not as large or coordinated, thwarted by due diligence. We have to keep on until they run out of suicide bombers or blow themselves into whatever future they seem to want. Right now, I am so glad I am not flying anywhere soon.

Baron, I feel that these restrictions are very imperative to our safety. I would rather be a little "inconvienced" and wait then to have another attack take place on our soil. Like you said, they don't have a time schedule that is relevant to ours, they may attempt to attack at anytime. That is why it is so imperative that when that threat level is raised and these check points become more aggressive, we should be so thankful, that law enforcement is doing their job to make sure that we are safe. So no, we are in no way over reacting, we are doing what needs to be done to insure our safety.

I like what Ardnas said....Go ahead and be complacent!!!! That's what the terrorist are banking on and maybe even waiting for. I remember after 9-11 that many said the next strike on the United States wouldn't be with planes....yet look what was discovered today.
C_O_Kay spoke my sentiments best. I'd always rather be safe than sorry. Everyone needs to take terrorism serious. There are people who hate Americans and all we stand for....they want to bring destruction to us as a nation. Do I think we are overreacting...No I don't.

Baron I agree with you 110%. In situations like these I don't think you can ever be to careful. I’ve always felt that we were going to get hit with another attack….I hope and PRAY that I am wrong but it’s a feeling that I’ve had since 9/11 happened.

There is never any over reacting for security of the public and Criminal Justice unless the government were to make a mistake or turn the public against each other.

YES we are! Will some point to any time where we were safe from terrorist, each other, nature, stupidity, and or just slipping in the tub! Life has been, will be, and should be full of danger. You’ll have absolute security, when you die, till then its an illusion!

Are we over reacting?

Better to ask the families of some of those people who jumped out of office windows in the World Trade Center to a certain death in 9/11 rather than be burnt to a crisp in a hallway or office.

And even better to ask the widow of one of the American men who was beheaded with a pocket knife and the last thing you heard on the tape they were making -- after his final scream and gurgle -- was the sound of his heart still pumping blood that was flowing on the floor where his head should have been.

What constitutes overreaction?

The only thing I can think of is total nuclear oblivion in the entire Middle East.

Now that -- just maybe -- would be going a step too far

Graywolf: Yes it IS difficult to tell the difference between a sport drink and an explosive, that was the whole point!!!!! Especially whey they are using the sport drink as part of the chemical reaction!!!!! Please, if anything, we are under reacting..........I think ALL carry on luggage should be banned. If folks don't want to deal with the hassle of checking baggage and the possibility of thier baggage being looted, then do what a travel anylist said and ship your luggage via UPS before you depart. Let's not forget that 9/11 happened because we failed to react at all to information pointing to a terrorist attack, America got caught with it's pants down.............NEVER again. Yes, we may look a little foolish with what is happening right now, but how foolish did we look to the terrorists when the towers fell and they were able to accomplish their goal so easily????????
