THIS JUST IN...
The Mayor's Summer Reading Program PARTY scheduled for Saturday morning (Aug. 18th/TAX FREE DAY) has been moved from the Dallas City Hall Plaza. BLAME IT ON THE POSSIBILITY OF RAIN!!!
It will now be held at the main branch of the Dallas Public Library, 1515 Young Street, Dallas (just right across the street from City Hall).
The party starts at 10:10am. An awards program will begin between 10:15am-10:38am. AND THE BIG PARTY RUNS UNTIL NOON!!
Mayor ProTem Elba Garcia and hopefully most if not all of the nearly 17,000 (2006: 15,380) kiddos who particpated in the 2007 MSRP and read 393,104 hours (2006: 380,748)...will all be there.
I'll definitely be there to congratulate the kids and serve as mcee of the special awards ceremony.
So, I hope to see you there!!
And remember "READERS ARE LEADERS"!
WELL, THEY DID IT! At last count 16,325 kids registered for the Mayor’s Summer Reading Program (MSRP) this year. Which, as I've proudly mentioned before, exceeds last year's total number of readers. The program ends officially Saturday, July 28th; but I know these kids won't stop reading!
It's been so rewarding and fun for me once again to serve as spokesman for the program and go around to so many of the library branches to visit with the kiddos; share in storytime with them; and encourage them to read! FOX 4 & MY27 are proud sponsors of the MSRP.
Now I can't wait to see how many HOURS the kiddos read this year. Afterall that's what the MSRP is all about--not how many books, magazines, etc. you read or have read to you--but the number of hours you read...and keep a log of. Of course the kids have garnered prizes throughout the summer based on their logged hours; but the party isn't over yet. I invite everyone out to Dallas City Hall on Saturday, August 18th for a fun-filled party to honor the kids and say thanks to all our sponsors.
Hope you can make it! And remember, kids, keep on reading because READERS ARE LEADERS!!
End-of-Summer Party and Award Celebration
Dallas City Hall Plaza
1500 Marilla St.
Saturday, August 18 10 a.m. - 12 noon
Music, entertainment, crafts, refreshments, and more! Come and celebrate your summer reading accomplishments!

NEW MSRP RECORD SET!!!

I'm thrilled to tell you that the Mayor's Summer Reading Program has set a new record. Just shy of 16 thousand kids have signed up this summer surpassing last summer's total readership. And we still have 10 days to go before the '07 MSRP wraps.
Thanks to all the kiddos for reading...the parents and older siblings for encouraging their young readers...and the librarians and staff for all they do.
As you know all summer I've been visiting with the kiddos at the Dallas Public Library Branches. And today I stopped by the Casa View Branch in East Dallas...to cheer on the children and congratulate all those who've been reading, reading, reading so much this summer. At Casa View alone some 750 readers have been keeping track of hours read...and collecting prizes along the way.
BTW
DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE BIG PARTY WE'RE THROWING AT DALLAS CITY HALL ON
SATURDAY, AUGUST 18TH FOR ALL THE "READERS WHO ARE DEFINITELY
LEADERS"(...look for more to come about this)
FOX 4 & MY27 are proud sponsors.
There's still time...to sign up for the Dallas Mayor's Summer Reading Program. And remember it's free to do so and you don't have to live in Dallas. Just be between the ages of 0 (yes baby's included too) and 18 years old...and READ, READ READ!...or have someone read to you...as I did today to a group of 3 to 8-year-old kids at the MLK Library Branch in South Dallas. (And what a smart group of kids they are too!)
Children's librarian, Mary Jones, told me that nearly a thousand kids at MLK have signed up for the MSRP--exceeding the number of participants there this time last year. KUDOS!
And systemwide, 15,375 readers (as of Monday) had signed up...compared to a total for the whole summer last year of 15,380. And there's still about 2 1/2 weeks left to go.
So get your kids signed up at your neighborhood library. For more info checkout www.dallaslibrary.org. And remember "READERS ARE LEADERS"!
The YOUNGER they are...
The SOONER They LEARN...
That "READERS ARE LEADERS"...
In the MAYOR'S SUMMER READING PROGRAM.
And in this week's installment of "WHERE IN THE DALLAS LIBRARY SYSTEM IS BARON JAMES," kiddos-- ages 1 to 7.. and I had a blast during storytime at the *Fretz Park Library Branch on Beltline in Far North Dallas. And I have to tell you as much fun as we had, this group presented a different sort of challenge--how long could I hold the attention span of basically 1, 2, and 3 year olds. (Typically my MSRP audiences are a little older.) Well, thank goodness the kid in me took over! So along with a couple of books with lots and lots of colorful pictures, my hyperkinetic enthusiasm to get them involved, and really a fun group of kids, we made it work! So far..at the Fretz Branch *600 kids.. have signed up for free.. in the MSRP.. and system wide.. we're closing in the 14-thousand mark. (Our goal's around 20K). And it's still not too late for you to sign up kids who not only read for fun and overall learning but also for great prizes. And stay tuned for more information about a big party coming up for all participants. And remember it's not how many books kids read or have read to them, but the amount of time spent just reading...that counts! And the kids don't have to live in Dallas to participate.Fox 4 and my27.. are proud sponsors.. of the reading program.

I've said it once; and I'll say it proudly again--"READERS ARE LEADERS" especially in the "MAYOR'S SUMMER READING PROGRAM" (MSRP)!
And today--as I continued my weekly visits to Dallas library branches and other learning centers, to spread the word about the MSRP and get kids involved--children of all ages continued to prove HOW MUCH FUN READING IS.
Be sure to watch FOX 4 NEWS today at 5 & 10 (as well as the reports here on myfoxdfw.com...just enter "summer reading" in the "search" box on the homepage) to see for yourself.
Today at the Grauwyler Park Library Branch -- the newest center in the Dallas system--a couple of avid readers, Monica Vega and Irma Zamarripa joined me for storytelling hour. And I have to tell you how impressive they both were; not to mention how thrilled our audience of kiddos was too!
Most of them have already joined more than 10K other kids so far in signing up this year--for free--to read, read, read in the Dallas Mayor's Summer Reading Program...and to win great prizes like trips to 6 Flags and electronic games. And it's still not too late for a child (ages 0 to 18 years old) you know to do so too (btw you don't have to live in Dallas to join). Checkout www.dallaslibrary.org
This is Monica Vega's 4th year in the program. She first signed up when she was 14. Last year she read for 75 hours over the course of the summer. She's already read 15 hours this summer. And her goal is 100 hours! Way to go, Monica...and to all the kids who are having fun this summer READING! In fact Grauwyler Park set a goal of registering 1000 kids this summer in the MSRP. And as of date they've signed up around 750. Kudos to Librarian,
Alexandra Burns, and her team...and of course the children!
And remember it's not about the number of books you spend reading or having someone read to a child, but the *hours spent...having fun and learning!
FOX 4 AND MY27 are proud sponsors of the Mayor's Summer Reading Program. And I can't wait to visit another library next week!
Readers Are Leaders

The Mayor's Summer Reading Program is in full swing and your kids don't have to read to particpate...and win prizes.
So far 10,051 kids--ages 0 to 18 have signed up.
And it's still not too late!
All kids have to do is sign up for free at a Dallas Library (www.dallaslibrary.org) and you don't even have to live in Dallas to particpate.
Today I teamed up with the Reading & Radio Resource Center to do the reading for a bunch of kids. The RRRC's recorded books program serves children and adults who are either visually or physically disabled or learning differenced.
And to participate in the Mayor's Summer Reading Program it doesn't matter if you read or someone else reads to you. Readers may choose any reading material, such as books, magazines, audio books, etc. It's the time spent reading or listening that is important, not the number of titles read.
Listeners may choose from over 3,300 titles listed in our catalog or can request that materials be recorded. Recordings are currently provided on either a standard two-track cassette or CD (MP3 format), which the listener may keep. To request a recording of specific materials, please contact the Recorded Books Manager at 214-871-7668, or e-mail audiobooks@readingresource.org. Any child, in grades one through twelve, who qualifies for Special Education services, in either public, private or home-school setting, may receive their state-adopted textbooks, as well as any of their supplementary classroom and outside reading materials, in an audio format. This also applies to students using English as a second language who are otherwise print impaired. Visit www.readingresource.org for complete information about Reading & Radio Resource's services.
Also look for me at different library branches throughout the summer...for more storytelling in the Mayor's Summer Reading Program.
SUPER SUMMER FUN!!!!

Summer vacation is still a week or so away for most North Texas kids. But the SUPER SUMMER FUN starts tommorrow!
The 2007 Mayor's Summer Reading Program kicks off at the Dallas Central Library and at Dallas Public Library's 25 branches where children from 0 to 18 yrs old will sign up to particpate in the program to read, read, read! And on top of that they'll win some really cool prizes based on the number of hours they read or have someone else read to them. In fact be sure to check out the list of exciting events (www.dallaslibrary.org) for kids at Dallas neighborhood libraries throughout the summer. And you don't have to live in Dallas to participate.
This morning Dallas Mayor Laura Miller and I teamed up again this year for story time at the central library to start spreading the news about the MSRP. Several dozen kids from DISD schools were there as well as reps of the corporate sponsors and donors who all help make the MSRP a big success!
Last year more than 15,000 children logged more than 380,000 hours reading books.
Let's make it more this year...because READERS ARE LEADERS!!!
So remember....
What: Mayor's Summer Reading Program 2007
Dates: May 19 - July 28, 2007
Where: Register at any Dallas Public Library
Who: Children ages 0 - 18
More info: www.dallaslibrary.org
or send viewers to our website: www.myfoxdfw.com
FOX 4 and MY27 are proud sponsors of the Mayor's Summer Reading Program.
Studies show that summer reading increases a child's ability to perform well in the next school year by expanding their vocabularies and helping them to become better writers. Reading's also proven to stimulate the right side of the brain and opens the mind to new possibilites. Reading can relieve stress and be so much FUN!

They're calling it the "social event of the season"! DIFFA Dallas' annual gala dinner & auction this past Saturday evening. But it's much more than that, it's a night to have fun fundraising more than a million dollars for AIDS Services Organiztions in North Texas which provide direct care for so many women, children and men who are affected by HIV/AIDS the day-to-day services and programs.
(DIFFA=Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS)
As a 2006-07 DIFFA Style Council Ambassador, (I'll post our "class photo"...coming up) I am honored, inspired and thrilled to be a part of this effort especially to inform others of the need to help record numbers of women and men in our area who are infected and affected by this disease. I volunteer at AIDS Services of Dallas and AIDS Interfaith Network to make a hands-on connection with those who need a helping hand...or a shoulder to lean on...or a hug to comfort.
A Texas-sized thank you for everyone who attended and who worked tirelessly to produce the annual black tie evening which this year was themed COLLECTION UPSIDEDOWN in part because of how HIV/AIDS has turned so many individuals', families', and communities lives...upsidedown.
The event also features amazing, wearable works of art--jean jackets that the non-profit taps creative designers and artists (from Ralph Lauren to Oprah) to recreate. The jackets are then auctioned off fetching 10's of thousands of dollars for the ASO's.
As always I invite and encourage you to volunteer, if not with DIFFA any non-profit because you can make a difference.
