My dad used to tell me years ago, when I was a teen and living at home, that whenever there was a storm coming up and there was high winds, to slightly open a few windows in the house to even out the pressure inside. Have any of you heard this and is this a real reason or maybe a myth?

This is True! The reason being that the pressure inside is lower then the pressure outside. So when you get high winds, the chances of your windows being blown out if you don't have them slighly opened is greater.

Thank you, Dallas. I've been wondering about this for quite some time.

NO! That was an old myth. It has been shown that strong winds from a tornado or a severe storm can enter a house through an open window and cause MORE damage than a closed window. The equalization in pressure is MINIMAL. In a severe storm we now recommend NOT to open windows.
