Man accused of starving 19 kids on trial

FRENCH VALLEY, Calif. (UPI) -- A California man charged with starving and physically abusing two women and many of their children has gone on trial almost a decade after his arrest.

Mansa Musa Muhummed's home in Aguanga was raided in 1999. Investigators said he kept two of his three "wives" and 19 children prisoner.

In her opening statement Monday, Assistant Prosecutor Julie Baldwin told jurors they would hear recordings of children screaming, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. She said Muhummed starved his victims and that one 19-year-old girl weighed only 56 pounds.

"These children were stunted due to the fact that the defendant starved them over a period of years," Baldwin said.

Laura Cowan, Muhummed's second "wife," said he moved in with her after her first husband went to prison in 1995. She told the jury Muhummed took total control of her life.

Muhummed claimed he was following Sharia law, but Cowan said she was already a Muslim and did not recognize some of his practices.

Under cross-examination Tuesday, Muhummed's attorney tried to shake Cowan by asking her why she left her baby daughter with Muhummed's first wife after the 1999 raid, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. Marva Boddie, his only legal wife, pleaded guilty to one count of child abuse in 2000.

She is a beautiful dog I must say, you must really love her a lot.

Let me guess...you spoil the heck out of her right?

She has to be the most spoiled dog ever. However, she is also the smartest dog I have ever seen, and I've seen many. Sometimes I feel guilty for not having her to something like sniffing for bombs or helping in some way. I could never give her up. She does not want anyone else around me either. The other babies have to wait their turn to get luvin.

I had a dog I really spoiled a lot, she got cancer. I had to put her to sleep and still haven't quite got over it yet and it's been over a year now. She was just a mutt but she was a great dog.

I know what you mean. My Jessie developed cancer and had two surgeries but then it moved to where it was inoperable. The hardest thing I ever had to do in life was to let her go. She was with me for over 14 years. She was a husky mix and was beautiful and the most gentle dog I have ever had.

You did not depress me. I have many fond memories of her. I don't have a picture of he on my computer. She left me May of'01. I will scan a picture of her so you can see how beautiful she was.

I'd like to see it.

I have fond memories also and wouldn't change a thing. I just wish I could have had her around a little bit longer, but isn't that always the case?

What's with the purple tongue that Jessie had?
Was she part chow or something.

She is a very sweet looking dog, and so is Cassie and Frankie (cat).

Yes she was a husky/chow mix. My Bella is a chow mix but looks more pure bred than most. I have hundreds of pictures of all of them. I also have two other cats that are not in the picture. I'm really a dog person and don't know how I ended up with 3 cats. Oh well. I love them all. Dying to get another dog but I don't think Bella would like that.

Bella's tounge has black spots both on the top and the bottom. She also has the curled tail like a chow.

I've always heard chows could be a little aggressive, is that true do you know?
