Student protests school no-hugging rule

MOLALLA, Ore. (UPI) -- An Oregon middle-school student has challenged her principal's no-hugging rule.

The Molalla River Middle School adopted the policy last year, the Molalla Pioneer reported. Principal Bob Espenel said students were spending too much time hugging between classes, impeding traffic in the school hallways.

"You'd have groups of 10 to 15 kids and they all had to hug each other

before they went to class," Espenel said. "It was getting out of hand. This is not the Love Boat."

But 7th-grader Desha Eaves thinks hugs are sometimes necessary.

"Sometimes they really need a hug and I didn't think it was fair for me to not give my friend a hug," she said.

She decided to make a formal protest, getting in touch with Espenel and writing the school board. The board decided the issue could be decided at school level, suggesting that Eaves and Espenel talk about the rule.

Espenel said he is not sure Eaves will change his mind. But he appreciates her for trying to work within the system.

I kinda see both sides of the coin here. I'm sure this girl who wants to hug is just a one on one hugger but there will be some that confuse orgy with hugging and there the problem begins. There are so many rules these days, it's a wonder the kids can even remember them all

Why did'nt they just say "don't block the hall"? Hugs are soothing to some people, especially when they have had a bad day.

I applaud this young lady. I have no doubt that there is kissing/touching going on and they have to put a stop to that kind of stuff but hugging? Come on now. It's just so over the top.

Hooray for the young lady who knows how to work within the system. So many things have gotten out of hand. Just a simple human touch, which can mean so much. When I started teaching I routinely gave my kids hugs and pats. By the end of my career I had to give that up for fear it would be misconstrued. So sad

Well....usually these kinds of rules are a "long time in the making"....they start out with a warning...."break it up, get to class" etc....

The kids usually just continue to push it as far as they can.....then it finally reaches the proverbial straw that breaks the camels back....THEN the rule comes into play.....

The girls are upset because they love to socialize....and be "BFF's"

The boys on the other hand...love the hugs because they get to press against the girls for a bit...trust me...they KNOW what they are doing...I was a boy once....The whole "I need a hug" thing is just a ploy....

on the surface it seems harsh....but I would bet money it didn't just "happen" overnight....

chances are...the kids just pushed it a little "too far"....did the school go "too far" as well?........according to kids....the answer would be YES~!....

Now get to class~!!!

Agreed. At least she is going about her challenge in a respectable manner.

It's all about LIABILITY. You TOUCH someone's arm ACCIDENTALLY these days, you get sued. I don't blame them. I say make em wear 10 foot poles so they can't get within 10 feet of eachother, and if they need a hug, it shouldn't be on "school" time. Hug OFF the property.
