The young man that is in the ICU for the basketball accident at his school.

I think that the EMT's should have been called immediately after the accident to check out both children and both parents should have been called immediately too. It's called CYA (Cover your ass-ets) that is in basic medical training 101 plus its just common sense.

OK I know I can hear it now.  They can't do that,  then they would have to call on all accidents. That would be using up EMT's  time everywhere.  So be it then. Better safe than sorry as in with this young man.

I think somebody in that school needs to be charged criminally with "medical neglect". And the parents of this young man need to sue to recoup any and ALL costs to this situation.

Now with this young man there was no report as to if  he has brain damage or is brain dead.  Only that he is on a vent and feeding tube. (Which I would suspect by that report that his brain has been compromised in some way.)

So here is were I know the flames are going to begin.

"IF" and thats a BIG "IF" this young man's brain has been compromised and he has no future for at least a half way productive life,  as much as I know these parents love their child why have they prolonged his passing into glory ?

Look before you flame away , I don't know about "letting a child pass into glory" IF I had to do it, I know it would almost kill me in my heart  but with that being said I would do it because it is the "right" thing to do. I do know about having to make that decision, it was on my 2nd husband when the doctors declared him brain dead. That decision almost killed me in my heart at that time.

Just my other 5 cents.

I have lost a child....thank God it was not to something like this, but, it hurts FOREVER.

I can imagine the pain that parents feel when the life of their children is taken by someone else.

In this case, you are correct. The parents should have been called IMMEDIATELY and had them come pick him up and leave it up to them to take the child to the ER.

I child does not know a severe injury.
It is the adults responsibility to make sure that the child/children are okay after any accident in school. That is why we sign all those forms to give them permission for medical treatment incase of an emergency.

The parents should have been NOTIFIED.

More of my two cents.

char, 911 wasn't called...even when the boy was unresposive in a wheel chair with his head bobbing up and down from the nurse rolling the chair down the sidewalk to put the kid in the parents vehicle. the school made sure to tell the parents they aren't financially responsible for anything. shame on them

This is from my point of view as a school nurse after seeing the video:

First, as I understand it, the kid "fell" while playing basketball. I don't know if any ADULT saw him fall, but it was reported that there were no complaints of injury or hurting by that student. He went back to class, & did not seek out any attention for any perceived problem.

An hour later, he told his teacher his neck hurt. Teacher had him rest his head for a few minutes. Then he went to lunch.

At lunch he was still complaining, so was sent to the nurse. It sounded like he was ok when he got to the nurses office, then deteriorated to the point of being unresponsive.

Now, what I would have done, after the child got to me, was to assess his responsiveness (is he alert, does he know where he is?. How did he fall, and on what part? Next call the parents (I DON'T call for everything, I only call for head/neck injuries or if I find an abnormality). When he started to become "unresponmsive", call 911 and monitor his ABC's (airway, breathing, circulation). Fill out incient report. "CYA".

You cannot call 911 for every fall or possible bruise. By God we could have an ambulance at every school if that's what people want.

I agree that the nurse should have called 911 when the child became unresponsive, Other than that, I'm not sure what else could have been done.

Call parents wben a kid skins their knee?? Call a parent every time a kid complains of a headache? Call the parent every time they complain of a stomach ache? That won't happen in my world unless there is an abnormalit

Keep in mind also that at least 60% of parents don't upate their phone numbers (they change them every 2 weeks), therefore wasting time and manpower.

I never understand it when people don't take action in situations such as this. Any head injury should be examined. Too often people are afraid of incurring bills or they wave off help. It shouldn't happen. I would think there would be policies in place to make sure that personnel took the proper actions in the case of such an accident. But then lately we have had incidents were dead bodies were overlooked and misplaced. The phone number comment is absolutely true. Too many people buy pay as you go phones, then let it lapse until they can buy another. Trying to call home has become a new sport at my school.

There are protocols, and if you ARE a RN (especially with a BSN), then your education and experience tell you to check the pupils for response, check the orientation, yada yada yada.

Now, was this in fact a RN? or was it a clinic attendant? Also, I guess I'd have to talk to the nurse or CA before I started pointing fingers.....sometimes the media doesn't tell ALL sides of the story.

I always put in writing that I RECOMMEND a visit to the DR. if such and such (say vomiting, fever, etc) PERSISTS.

We also have head injury slips that are sent home for all possible head injuries stating signs and symptoms to watch for (vomiting, lethargy, lack of coordination, etc) as well as when to seek medical attention.

Illusionsss, no disrespect to you, but, according to the first report, the PE teacher DID see the accident. Both boys collided with eachother and the one boy fell and hurt his neck. The PE teacher should have sent him to the nurse...IMO.

I coach and play soccer and I KNOW for a fact, that it hurts like hell when you fall on your head and bend your kneck and the next day, it is even worse. This is from an adults point of view. Now, can you imagine hitting a hard surface like the gym floor and being so young and brittle?

I don't know about where you work at, but, it is my understanding that when a child is hurt in class any and all teachers should atleast make a report of it just incase something like this ever happens.

I think that YOUR protocols are good, but, from experience with these DISD nurses, alot of them don't know what the heck the are doing, then they turn around and lie about what they told you and falsify reports. (this is what one nurse did about my son's injuries at school and how it happened)

This is one of the reasons why I took my son out of DISD schools and put him in a small private school.
