It was with some amusement last night that I witnessed the specticle of conservative Republicans standing in line to vote for Hillary Clinton in the Texas Democratic primary. As most of you know, these "stealth" Republican voters hope to stop the streamrolling Obama by keeping Hillary in the race. And this morning, this seemed to have worked, at least in Texas.
Of course, the strategy for this "crossover" is not to show distain for McCain but to help elect Hillary as the Democratic nominee. Repubicans feel (correctly I think) that Hillary is so polorizing, so distrusted, so loathed by ordinary Americans and Republicans of all stripes that she will motivate the dispirited and fractured Republican base to turn out in November and keep the White House in GOP hands. This idea is not without merit. Plenty of Independents (myself included) feel that Obama has a much better chance to defeat McCain than Mrs. Clinton.
However, this strategy is very high risk. As many of the political pundits admitted, yesterday's primary race was "do or die' for Hillary. If Obama had beaten her in both Ohio and Texas, it would been the knock out punch to the Clinton machine.
Yesterday morning, Hillary Clinton was on the ropes. Had Republicans either stayed out of the Democratic Primary or voted for Obama, the "dreaded" Hillary candidacy would have come to an end. But now, she lives on to fight another day. If Hilary DOES go on to win the nomination, she would almost certainly ask Obama to be her VP. If he accepts, there is an excellent chance McCain could still lose in November.
I'm not sure "100 years in Iraq" and "Ba-ba-ba-bomb Iran" are motivating campaign slogans.
So, to recap, if the actions of Republican crossover voters yesterday kept Hillary's campaign alive and she goes on to win the nomination and then the White House, would it not follow that these same people are responsible for placing her in the White House?
If so, then I do not want to hear any whining from a drug addicted Rush Limbaugh or any of his followers on January 9th, 2009. Hillary's campaign was kept alive by their actions. On their death beds, I hope these Republican's last thougths are..." And I voted for that woman.'
That would be sweet karma indeed.
