The Other Chip

I took the family to Sunday's Rangers-Blue Jays game, and as usual, we had a great time.  Rangers were kind enough to hit 3 homers (love those fireworks) and get some good pitching too, for an exciting 3-2 win to earn a sweep.  And to top that off, my son took home his first bona fide major league foul ball.  Love it.

But look at this picture.

\

This is Section 18, first level along the third-base line.  Perhaps the third inning of Sunday's game.  With the execption of about 20 people in the first two rows, the rest of our section was empty.  Folks, these are good seats, and while most are owned to season ticket holders (like my company), it's a shame they're empty on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

My boss and friend Bruce is a huge Rangers fan just like me.  We're the resident Rangers historians here at FOX 4.  He says the Rangers can't just stay in the hunt this season.  Even if they're competitive in what looks like a weak division, they won't win back any fans.  Bruce says the Rangers need to run off a 30-5 streak to get fan excitement back.  I agree.

Rangers, I love you still.  But you gotta start winning.  How about a sweep of the Yankees this week, and then another of the Angels this weekend.

OK, enough of the preaching.  Now, more pictures:

Here's my son with his first foul ball!  (It helps to be sitting in an empty section.)

Here's the fireworks after Michael Young's 8th-inning home run that proved to be the game-winner.

Chipster, my Red Sox have recorded something like 400 straight sellouts of Fenway Park in Boston.

However, I can remember a time when Fenway looked just like The Ballpark, game after game.

John Henry used all of the means necessary to bring winning baseball back to Boston. He spent 103 million on a player who had never thrown a pitch in America, say nothing of the Major Leagues! The seats have been filled for several seasons and one World Series win certainly didn't hurt, either.

Rangers ownership needs to learn this lesson. "Build it (a winning team) and they will come". Having one or two all-stars in the lineup isn't enough. The Yankees have that many sitting on their bench!

With one or two exceptions, the Rangers are pretty much an embarrassment.

The next seven days should tell us what the Rangers are really made of this season.

They play seven in a row against the Yanbkees and Angels -- clubs they have not beaten this year.

If they dont win at least five of those seven and win both series -- well

It's time to start sorting out the deadwood and rebuilding this team.

There is absolutely nothing in their minor league system that will offer any help in the next three years.

Three of four of the Texas farm clubs this year have pretty good teams -- but that is all they are -- minor league teams.

My daughter and I are Ranger fans but we can't afford to go very often, the tickets and parking etc has just gotten too high for us. the last time we went was last year when our doctor gave us some tickets. I really like this years team and watch em on TV or radio, I just feel like they are gonna start soaring soon! Go Rangers!

keller said it all, build a winning team and they will come, this is PROFESSIONAL , and a lot of money is spent by the fans just attending one game, not attending games is exactly what tom hicks and the rangers deserve when you lose year after year. let grand prairie build a minor league park and fans can go see good entertainment on the cheap for a whole family, but the major leagues is about top notch championship baseball and it hasn
't happened and ain't happening

Howdy! First off, I'm not the FOX 4 traffic guy. That's Waggoner. I'm the "other Chip" and I’m the managing editor of this world’s-finest newsroom. One of my responsibilities is to manage this website, so I’d love to hear your comments. Outside of work, I’m on the board of directors of Radio Television News Directors Association, the leading organization of TV/radio/online journalists in the world. One of the Top 5 highlights of my life will come when the Texas Rangers win a World Series. My wife is also in TV News, and we've got two great kids. This photo is me in front of a mountain glacier at the Columbia Icefields in Alberta, Canada. How to tell Chip Waggoner and me apart? We're both good-looking, but he's a Frog and I'm a Mustang, and that's all you need to know about that!
