So I was watching the news just now, FOX4 of course, and they stated that across Texas there were 1300 DWI related deaths last year!  Well, ironically today I read a story on the Star Telegram website about how a 23 year old Arlington man, who killed someone as a result of his DWI accident, received 6 months jail and 10 years probation.  Are you kidding me, for taking a life... 6 months on lock-down?  Probation is a slap on the hand & six months in the slammer is far too little.  I think we need harsher penalties, these things happen far too often.  Just this week a couple was killed by a REPEAT offender!  It's constantly on the news... I remember an incident involving a late teenager who caused an accident that critically injured his friend and killed a mother who was driving with her two daughters.  I'm sure he'll get the same, 6 months lock up & 10 years probation.  Is it just me or is this punishment too leniant?

When the state congress worries more about Tort reform than lives, there is a big problem.

This has been a problem in Texas as far back as I can remember.Everyone who runs for the state legislature has a plan but when they get there they never do anything

Likke TM says -- we got a problem and we always will until we start holding these jokers accountable for the job they are doing

"When they get there they never do anything". I wonder why that is? Could it be that the alcohol lobbiest got to them and filled their pockets? I wonder.

You have no idea how right you are on everything you said. Texas leads the nation in drunk driving deaths AND TEXAS LEADS the nation the number of INCREASED drunk driving injuries and deaths.

So what does that say about our state. As far the time a drunk driver gets for killing someone you are correct. Loren Nicole Thrower's life was worth five years.

My family got a life time sentence and he got five years. That my friend is not justice.

It should always be "murder" pure and simple. Minimum 30 yrs with no parole. Oh, I'am so sorry. Please forgive me. That wouldn't be fair to the scumbag would it?

This is a problem that will never be solved, because of the money involved. Check points will work a little, but nothing short of making alcohol illegal and shuting down all places to get alcohol is going to be the only way to stop this problem. Which will never happen.

Do not misled, Texas is much tougher on DWI cases than you may be led to believe. Six months of jail and probation is hardly worth a life, but that is an exception, not a set rule.

Don'y be swayed by the media covering this as they will not present a fair and balanced picture, regardless of political affiliation.

Rather, search the record for sentences and become truly informed.

Moankie82. I agree it should be murder. Because drunk driving is not an accident it is a violent crime and one that is totally preventable.

Loren should not be dead. That fool may have not set out to intentionaly kill Loren that day, however the fact is that he did and almost killed her sister as well.

After serving five years he is now enjoying a second chance. Where is my family's second chance.

When it comes to drunk driving as I can say is that I pray it never happens to you. Because you cannot imagine the pain and devastation that comes with losing someone you love to a situation that is so preventable.

All he had to do that day was call someone. Loren would have been 14 now. Knowing what I know about that day, I believe if Texas had sobriety check points Loren would be alive today. For all the doubters until it happens to you, no one knows what they would do.

Scotty you preach a good sermon. I hope you never end up on the otherside. I truly do. Don't believe me just talk to my cousin, see how it changed his life.

Drunk driving convictions are considered violent crimes.

I preach a good sermon because I've been there with my father.

Put away for good. The majority of them are like other felons. They almost always become repeat offenders.
