A Dawg's eye view

Well first let me state before I write this, that I do not either engage in or encourage illegal drug use.

After hearing of the tragic accident this morning of the drunk driver who while running from the police ran into and killed an innocent, a though occurred to me. Why is it that we hear so much about drunk drivers and the accidents they cause which are often fatal to at least one innocent but hardly ever the driver themselves, but very little about a person under the influence of marijuana doing the same?

The reasons can be multiple, maybe they aren't reported as much? Maybe the media does not see them as outstanding enough? Or maybe there just aren't as many. Although I do not use marijuana, I know people who do. And of those people I have never seen one of them act out in a violent way while under the influence. I have never known any of them to get into a car accident while under the influence either. Marijuana by its nature calms one down, while on the other hand alchohol is a stimulant and a depressant which can wreak havic on even the most sane of us. So why is Marijuana tauted as being so harmful when the most harm I have ever seen it do to a person is make them a little lazy, or hungry and after a lifetime of use a little forgetful?

It seems to me we could not only save billions of tax dollars that are spent fighting the "war on drugs" by legalizing Marijuana, but we could make billions of dollars off the tax revenue AND have some FDA control.

I am not necessarily for legalization, but pointing out some of the flaws in the logic of having a legal drug (alchohol) readily available that has caused a lot of problems for our society, while an illegal drug that if legal would not cause near as much and actually relieve some of societies woes remains illegal.

Just looking to hear some points of view on this.

We tried probation and it didn't work.
But, there is no good reason to make legal, a drug like marijuana. We have enough probs with the legal drugs and immature, irresponsible people to encourage any more behavior.
And lastly, if legalized, the government would lose the fun to sending ppl to jail and collecting money for their crime.

"We tried prohibition and it didn't work" You could not be more correct and from the looks of things in our world the prohibition on drugs is working no better. That there is flawed logic in our legal system is a given and painfully obvious in many of it's branches. We treat addicts like criminals rather than treating them for what they are, people with an illness. I trulely believe that our system as it is actually creates more criminals than it helps. Char is also correct that far more money is to be made by keeping it illegal. I do, however, disagree that there is no good reason to make it legal. As a medical treatment, it has been shown to have many beneficial effects for a variety of symptoms for several diseases, with far less dibilitating side effects than other treatments/medications. I think that folks suffering from severe and terminal illness should be permitted what relief it provides.

Rusty...is that you? :)

marijuana didn't even become illegal until 1937 and that was a huge mistake. There are no deadly chemicals put in pot like there is cigarettes. Maybe our govt keeps cigs legal and pot illegal because nobody dies from pot but the govt weeds out the more "undesirable" citizens by keeping cigs legal and deadly.

Char I have to admit that in the very least your postings are amusing "the government would lose the fun to sending ppl to jail and collecting money for their crime"? I don't quite get this logic, if there is any logic to that statement at all. How is it "fun" for the government? And how does the government collect money for their crime?

I agree with LA in that we should not be treating our addicts like criminals, but I am speaking about Marijuana here and no other illegal drugs. The reason why I raised the question is directly related to the drug itself and its apparent lack of harm to our society with the exception of the illegality of it. I don't understand, so please explain why you both think we make more money from it being illegal- did I miss something?

As far as I know it is legal to have is prescribed as a medication.

It's called 'joking', dawg, 'humor', 'jest'.

Marijuana does cause "harm", quite clearly, it does. For med reason, certainly a possible exception, but not for recreational use.

Some offenses are charged by fines, i.e. money to the government.

Not only do they collect money through fines, but also from seizing and selling the property of offenders. It happens everyday. You can find auctions of drug bust properties all the time in many cities. Nevermind all the cash that is seized in these busts.

The govt could make so much more money by legalizing and taxing. But then they couldn't protect us from ourselves.

Strand how some still believe if we didn't waste our resources and ruin lives over this planet, that has NEVER killed anybody solely from it's use, " IN THE RECORDED HISTORY OF THIS PLANET! Some believe everybody would be using it??? Yet in countries where it is accepted, their teen rate for using it "" IS HALF WHAT OURS IS "???

How about holding FREE AMERICANS responsible for their actions that harm others, and not others taught biases and fears???

At the bottom of our home page there are several links for those willing and honest enough to accept reality and the truth!:)

Actually this guy had a previous charge of DWI and marijuana...DWI could mean under the influence of various things (including alcohol and marijuana).

Possibly people high on marijuana has less concern with going anywhere, so they don't drive as much under the influence. LOL

Orphan,

Good point, sadly there is NOT a test, UA, BLOOD, HAIR etc.. that can tell if one is under the influence of pot, all they can tell is at some point in the last " 90 DAYS " a person has come in contact with it! But due to the biases and fear mongering, use of ANY KIND OR OF ANY DEGREE is considered AUTOMATIC ABUSE. Therefore " ALL " are guilt of the supposed offense, IT IS AUTOMATIC regardless of the lack of evidence to support the supposed fact! Sad and pathetic!:(

People wonder why we keep hearing of more DWI's, if we continue to lower the limits to unrealistic points, how can we not expect the numbers to rise??? Sadly we have a NEW prohibition, one our past has shown WILL NOT WORK! Those that faile to heed the mistakes of the past ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT THEM!
