A Dawg's eye view

Question of morals/ethics. I recently had a friend tell me about this, I will give my reply after I have gotten a few from you- but I don't want to taint or sway what you would normally say in this situation.

You are at the gym, you go to put your stuff in a locker and there sits an ipod. Nothing else in the locker, and there was no lock on it or any indication that anyone had it locked at some point.

Do you:

A) take it and keep it for yourself
B) turn it in to the front desk at the gym
C) something else I didn't consider

Yep, I'd take it to the front desk too.

If this is the men's locker room, I wouldn't be IN the there. heheh

I'd take it to the Desk too and tell them where it was left (i.e. it belonged to a woman). I can't think of an option 3??

Of course, being an IPod it might have personal info IN it?, but that would be too snoopy.

i can tell you from experience...I would turn it in at the desk, if I think I can trust the staff. Otherwise, I might post a message on the bulletin board to contact me.

If I turn it in and might be interested in it, I might ask what their policy is on lost & found if it isn't claimed.

Thanks for your replies! I would have turned it in as well, without even thinking about it.

When my friend told me about it he told me by saying he had an ipod and wanted my help to show him how to use it, load it etc. He was excited about it, until I made him feel guilty about taking it in the first place, he ended up taking it back and giving it to the front desk. After I posted the original queery he also admitted that there was a car key and a membership card with it, so he could have easily been able to see whose it was which to me made it much worse that he thought he should take it for himself. He also admitted that if I didn't guilt him into it, he would not have returned it.

He is my best friend, and I will not judge him (that is someone elses job), but it does make one wonder about what makes people think they can do something like this. I guess our selfish nature sometimes just gets the best of us.

I was recently walking out of a Target and saw cash fall from a woman's wallet and the "wad" rolled in front of her where she would not have seen it.

I walked up to her (with my kids) and told her that the money had fallen out of her wallet and had slipped under the thing where you put your stuff. She was so glad I stopped and told her. Nice learning experience for the kids.

Always do the right thing....I believe it will come back to you when you do!!

I agree oldrocker. I was once given $80 in stead of $40 for cash back at Target. I noticed just after I got in my car, took it right back in and handed it to the cashier. I could have used the extra $40, but he probably only makes $7 an hour and that would surely have come out of his check, if they didn't fire him for it.

Every kind thing we do comes back to us, as does each unkind thing. Personally I would rather be the recipient of the kind things coming back LOL!

I used to walk at the mall..found a man's billfold ..took it to the info booth..I did not even look in it but the gal from the booth called me the next day and told me how happy the man was to get his billfold back intact..she told me there was about $150.00 cash in it..I never even thought about keeping my find .....just today I returned an item to Kohl's (cost about $20.00) somehow the clerk was going to credit my card almost $60.00 ..til I called the error to his attention...I guess i'm workin on my list too

I would turn it in to the front desk. People pay a lot of money for those things. My oldest daughter recently had her phone stolen at school. If we had more honest people in the world, who would turn things in instead of keeping what doesn't belong to them, maybe it would be a great place to live.

I think there are more honest people out there than you realize. It's the little bits of honesty that count, like the ipod example. Is everyone honest - no but i don't think we are outnumbered.

Always do the right thing.

When I was taking class to become a security officer (my 2nd job) one of the instructors gave us a break. Asked us to take a look at something on one of the tables, during the break.

When we came back, he asked how many people had seen the change he'd left on the back table. Me, I hadn't paid it any attention. He'd left it there, as a temptation.

What goes around, comes around, so always do the right thing.

Turn it in, no question.

Unfortunately, since my husband and I moved back to Dallas we have had a truck stolen out of our driveway when I was 9 months pregnant, a purse stolen from me while dropping the kid off at daycare, and then a cellphone stolen by a gas station clerk. ALL IN 2 YEARS!! There aren't enough people in Dallas doing the right thing. And don't expect the police to care unless you live in a McMansion.

And the something you didn't consider:
c) do nothing
