Subject: Repealing the REAL ID Act

Oh, those poor Senators. They're really traumatized. They heard from far too many of their constituents over the immigration bill. The news is full of quotes about it. Senators feel assaulted, intimidated.

Don't you feel sorry for them?

Maybe we should give them a break? Go easy on them? Let them catch their breath?

Naugh.

Let's pound them again.

Just when they think the beating is over, and they've let down their guard, here comes another blow . . .

Congress needs to repeal the REAL ID Act. Americans don't want it. It was passed in a dishonest way, by combining it with a completely un-related bill. The states are rejecting it. New Hampshire is the latest to vote not to comply. But . . .

The longer we let this law stay on the books the more likely it is to ensnare us. We dodged a bullet with the immigration bill, which could have made the REAL ID national identification system more entrenched.

Congress thinks they're done with this issue, now that immigration legislation is tabled for a good long while, but we must disabuse them of this notion. They aren't done until we tell them they're done (they work for us remember), and we won't be satisfied until the REAL ID Act is repealed.

Please write Congress today and tell them that. You can do so here.

DD, rather just pee and moan about it, why not suggest something better??? Or, do you feel that no identification system is needed?

I've followed the debate and honestly don't have an opinion one way or the other of the proposal/law.

As for: "It was passed in a dishonest way, by combining it with a completely un-related bill." That's what EARMARKS are! And I honestly agree with you...Earmarks are a sneaky, underhanded method by which representatives funnel billions of dollars into their own districts for such things as "research on the sex life of an amoeba ".

There is no need (or constitutional authority) to create a massive government database on every individual, nor any centralized ID system.

Do you feel that SSAN's are adequate for identification at the Federal level?

I guess what I want to know is how do we identify ourselves actually and legally?

It's just a guess, but I'd say that national security would be the basis for compliance with the Constitution.

SSAN?

If we were within the confines fo the Constitution, what need would there be for Federal ID?

SSAN = Social Security Account Number.

Because the Constitution and subsequent settled law defines an "American Citizen" for purposes of running for elected office, voting, etc.

We've seen rather nasty examples of late, whereby people NOT here legally have held elected positions, assumed identities of relatives and become police officers.

How do we cure that problem?

Those are not fed issues, except where one is running for a fed office. Background checks on those individuals would be just as effective as the ones for fed ID, but limited to those volunteering for them.

Background checks require strict identification guidelines be followed!! Fingerprints required for positive ID, in most all cases.

If I am the people and the people are the government, I want to know - positively - who's in my country. As a 61 year old many times proven citizen, I still have to show all kinds of identification to do much of anything. Million of others DON'T, or choose to present counterfeit documents. I want to know who they are and I want them OUT of my country.

This plan won't address that. Just like anti-second amendment laws, it will only serve to further subjugate the law abiding.

If this "federal papers" system works, then it would be sufficient for anyone running for fed office. State offices, voter registration, police officers, etc are all the responsibility of the state or local authorities.

the "REAL ID" is nothing more than fed bureaucracy tracking supposed "free people". It will only apply to those that aren't hiding. It isn't mandatory (technically), but it is designed to inhibit free movement of a supposed "free society".

Background investigations for all law enforcement and critical needs positions are conducted almost exclusively by the Federal Bureau Of Investigation, by and through the National Crime Information Center. State investigations will only give that individual state's history. That's pretty much worthless and many/most states don't use the fingerprint identification system unless it's from a custodial position.

Then that process needs to be fixed, there is no reason to make everyone suffer because of a few. Aside from federally registering everyone, tons of taxpayer money wasted. It won't make us any safer.

If they can't get it right for the few, how will they get it right when the demand is increased 1000 fold?

I guess if I had the answer to that question I wouldn't be blogging in Keller, Texas.

I am intelligent enough to know that politics are not 1 dimensional. I am neither right nor left, Republicrat nor Demlican (as if there's a difference), conservative nor modern "liberal". Most blogs posted under this persona are not my originals.
