I was under the impression that prescription drugs are for helping people who are sick or to prevent and stave off other serious medical conditions like high-blood pressure, diabetes, etc.

I've recently been aware of the increasing reports on KIDS taking and abusing these prescribed medications to "benefit" from the side-effects.  Although this sounds absurd to me, apparently, it's drawing in an alarming number of "experimenters" a day....just try 2500 kids a day use these drugs for the first time, and no not to cure an ailment but to get high.

I also learned that prescription drugs are the number drug of choice for 12 to 13 year olds.  Secondly, teens abuse prescription drugs more than any illicit street drug, well besides marijuana.  This was all shocking NEWS to me.

As a parent, I would love to know more about the warning signs for presciption drug abuse.  Are there more relevant tale-tale signs other than missing pills?  I have a few meds around, but nothing I would consider dangerous...just antibiotics.  BUT I must stay alert and not pretend that my kids, nephews, neices and the like are immune to becoming a victim of this "other form" of addicition.

Funny (well, not funny) thing is there is a COUPON in today's newspaper that says, bring in this coupon to your local pharmacy and get 7 free pills.  This was for some sleeping disorder and the drug is a prescribed medication.  Put two and two together and any clever kid can get a quick helping of prescribed drugs.  If these drug companies put "free coupons" in our newspapers where anyone can get a hold of them then this is just one more thing we parents have to be on the lookout for.

I have a feeling the kids are only hearing how fun these meds are but don't read all that fine print on the back of the long pamphlet tucked inside.  WARNING: SERIOUS SIDE-EFFECTS MAY OCCUR.  DIZZINESS, SEIZURES, LOSS OF APPETITE, NAUSEA, THOUGHTS OF SUICIDE, ANXIETY, HALLUCINATIONS, MENTAL PROBLEMS, SKIN RASH, DEATH!

I would feel better if drug companies didn't put free coupons in newspapers. i would feel better if the newspaper people wouldn't let them.  It's hard enough and there's enough to worry about instead of adding this other factor into the equation.

I agree the papers should not issue these free drug sample coupons. Even if the pharmacists would not give them to minors, the kids could always send an older relative or frend (perv)to get the free drugs for them. The sad thing about kids and the prescription drugs is this is just a start into drugs for them. They usually graduate on to illegal drugs from there. By the time these kids become adults (if they live that long) they will have severe mental and physical disorders from their drug use. They will be the corporate execs and lawmakers of tomorrow. Scary, isn't it?

I take 10 different drugs a day. For high BP, cholesterol, chronic bronchitis, chronic pain, migrianes and several other things. How are these kids gonna get other ppl to get the rx for them when it needs a RX to begin with? Those coupons help out when you don't have the money to try a new drug you need out and don't have the money.

The pharmacy will NOT give out those "free" pills without a doctor's prescription.

Nancy, I hope you have good insurance! Have you ever added up the monthly cost for meds without insurance?

Why don't they hand out coupons at the doctor's office? Does it not bother you the least bit that the drug companies take out HUGE ONE PAGE adds marketing this stuff like it's clothes or a new car? Prescription or no prescription to get the meds, it sends the wrong message and gives a false sense that prescription meds are OKAY and to some degree safe when viewed through the eyes of a teenager...or child... This should be left for the doctors' offices.

We're once again facing a new battle. Time to climb out of the dark ages. There's as many DRUG commercials as there are cereal commercials. Do you nancymccoy really need to see all these advertisements, commercials, etc. or can you reserve this for your doctor visits?

Day2, the companies are hoping consumers will take those coupons to the doctor's office and ask for a prescription. Scripts=Sales.

That's how they're selling their products-- straight to the consumers, rather than to the doctors. The companies spend millions on advertising, and sometimes the pills cost $20-$30 each!

At least there's one restriction on ads: if they say what the drug is for, they must also list side effects. At least the FDA didn't let them get away with hiding those.

they are doing a convincing job with their ads. I've thought i might have had at least 20 of the different things i've seen them put on tv...lol:)

Siverdive, I completely disagree. You sound like those folks on Reefer Madness, what with your embellishments.

The simple fact of the matter is that this is nothing new. When I was a kid in the 60's there was almost as much pill popping of legal meds as there was smoking pot.

Times haven't changed, pills have. The drug companies have an answer for every ailment known to mankind, whether it works or not.

Too, most kids that do abuse drugs (pills, weed, etc) grow out of it and move on to adulthood with no side effects save for a waste of time and life.

Lets be concerned indeed, but not subject others to abject paranoia and Reefer Madness hyperbole.

what is reefer madness hyperbole?

Day2, Reefer Madness is an old movie from the 1930s that wildly overexaggerated the effects of marijuana. It's considered a comedic classic now because of its over-the-top ridiculousness. (i.e. one puff of pot will make you go insane, etc.)

AliceK...AH-HA! I haven't seen it b4. Is he implying i'm over-reacting? Sounds like he's been fortunate enough to have had everyone in his life outgrow their drug addictions. Unfortunately, I haven't been so lucky. Guess it's a lack of true empathy on his part...not that i wish him to experience it, but if he doesn't know how it feels then perhaps he should stick to writing about topics he can relate to.

Alice K is exactly right.

Hyperbole is exaggeration.

Rent Reefer Madness and check it out.

oh, no thank you, scottythecomic. I don't need to see a movie about marj and drugs being okay. I see enough commercials on Tv, newspaper ads, and magazines from the drug companies making everything look peachy-king to satisfy that need for a while.

Day2 - Regardless of the coupons, the physician must still write a prescription for the medicine.

And - if it is a controlled substance, the person picking up the prescription must show a valid ID that is written in a Log Book. That log book must be verified if there is ever any question.

If a parent were to find a "stray bottle" around of narcotics, they could simply go to the pharmacy on the bottle, show the pharmacist the bottle, he would look the ID of who picked it up, and that person would be arrested for "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" at the VERY least.

These kids are getting it from parents / friends parents / older relatives. I think the coupons in the paper - it is about DAYUM time the pharmaceutical companies give some kind of discount being they have been ripping people off for long enough!! And - I think there is no other way to "advertise" a new medicine.

Example - say you had Fibromyalgia. You have had it for 15 years - and take random prescriptions and/ or OTC meds. A new drug comes out for Fibromyalgia. Your doc can't sit and go through all his charts and call all the Fibromyalgia patients. It is hopefully you will see the ad on TV or in the paper and try the drug that way, AND get a discount to do it.

not so much, infectious_sense. The DAYUM pharmaceutical companies can give their coupons in dr.'s offices, etc. BUT my real beef isn't with the coupons...it's with the AMOUNT of advertising that is done. Having an informed society is fine. There are ways to distribute this information in a less-commercialized way and not bombard young ones with this harmless looking advertisement. Everyone always looks so happy on these commercials, they are always smiling, riding their bicycle...everything looks so "innocent". Have you ever seen an ad showing the effects of taking a particular medicine FROM A DRUG COMPANY when you didn't need it or you take too much of it or you've abused it for countless years bc it is habit forming. NO! Kids aren't getting the message. Instead the "try the drug out" "see what you think" is your mindset and that of many others - and the kids are doing exactly that..trying it out to see if they like it.

And how are potential patients going to find out about the drug unless they go to their doctor FOR that problem?

They won't. And - no - "try it out and see what you think" is NOT my motto - my motto is that adults (who are getting the prescriptions from the pharmacies) should take responsibility for that drug and keep it locked and/or protected or do NOT have it in your house.

The advertising done by the drug companies has nothing to do with kids taking drugs they can get their hands on. The kids DOING the drugs aren't paying attention to and / or reading ads - they are getting the info from their friends or at school.

And - the drugs they are doing (Oxycontin, Hydrocodone, Ativan, Valium, Fentanyl, etc.) are NOT advertised. The ads I see are for ED and sleep aids like Ambien or Ambien CR. That isn't what the kids are after - as those don't give the "high" they are looking for.

Look it up - the drugs found in schools are NOT the ones actively advertising.

Instead of looking to place blame or create new regulations from incidents - I say make the adult who obtained the prescription responsible. They would be held to such had the child gotten hold of alcohol - why are drugs different? Alcohol can still be advertised.

CLICK HERE FOR WHICH DRUGS KIDS ARE USING

None of those drugs listed are any I have seen ANY advertisements for. And - this comes straight from the DHS, which sets regulations for the FDC and for the DEA. With these statistics, the FDC and DEA will create more strict requirements on these drugs, and children will likely move on to drugs with less restrictions (take for example Ephedrine - now behind the counter and regulated).

That is all I am saying. The drugs being abused by kids are not the ones being advertised in the Sunday paper or on TV.

Day2,

You should watch the movie, to see how your public servants have no problem LYING to fit their self serving agendas!

Kids are being forced to more and more hard legal drugs to avoid being caught, due to the government attempting to force their drug war fear mongering in to our schools. We have lost over 22 kids to CHEEZE, right here! Be honest and ask yourself this question, " IF " your going to try something and one can be detected up to " 90 Days " and the other is out of your system and undetectable in " 3 DAYS ", which one would you choose???

Sadly the reality is, pot has never KILLIED anybody in the recorded history of this planet, yet it can be detected up to 90 days! While hard drugs like heroin, meth, coke, oxcy, morphine etc.. and other KILLERS are out of your system in 3 days, that is why they are addictive!!! Now ask your self the same question, except it is for employment, and losing your job????

I would much rather be disciplining my child for using a “ GOD “ given plant that has never killed anybody by an overdose, than to be putting flowers on their grave due to fear mongering!!! Or having to try and defend a policy that KILLS and lead to ADDICTION under the disgusting premises of for their own good! Yep, we lose some, but they will not influence any others, it is for the greater good, REALLY “, SPEAK UP, those already in the GROUND and on the road to ADDICTION CAN'T HEAR HOW GOOD THIS IS FOR THEM!!!

There Has To Be A Better Way!:)
