Today was the simplest event to cover so far this campaign season. I walked from my room on-campus to the bottom floor of the student center. Five minute commute. Nice.

Actress Sophia Bush from One Tree Hill and Adam Rodriguez from CSI: Miami arrived at 5 p.m. in front of a group of about 50 students – all girls except for one or two guys.

They each talked on their own for about ten minutes and then did a Q&A with the crowd. I’m guessing there was some text messaging going on, because the crowd kept growing as the event went on. By the end there was probably a little less than 100 people there.

Not too bad for an event that was only promoted on Facebook.

This is the first event from any campaign on the SMU campus so far this primary season.

On a more personal note, I was the only media person there. The Obama organizers actually thanked me for showing up. Go figure.

Ann Wyatt and I were at the first event of the day for Hillary Clinton in Oak Cliff. We arrived at 8:30 a.m. and the event got underway sometime around 9:15. Afterwards we were talking with supporters and getting their reactions to the speech and Clinton's debate performance. During this Clinton's press officer came over and told us a press gaggle was going to occur soon behind the main stage. This is very unusual - no event I have covered in Texas or New Hampshire had a gaggle. Both the local and traveling press set up and waited for Clinton to come over.
It was during this time that I began talking to the other press members and they said a Dallas motorcycle officer in the motorcade over had crashed, but they didn't know what had happened. Minutes later the Blackberry's of various media members began going off and word spread that the officer had died. The traveling press corps said their bus drove by the accident and they saw the officer on the ground with a "large amount" of blood on the road. They also saw the motorcycle sprawled out a good distance from the officer.
Clinton came over a short time later and gave a statement expressing condolences to the officer's family and indicating she would talk with the family as soon as it was appropriate to do so. She said the accident is a reminder of the hard work and dedication of all law enforcement officers.

Former Democratic candidate for governor Gary Mauro liked Clinton's debate performance.

The entire press room went "Oooooooo" when Clinton mentioned that one of Obama's surrogates on TV could not name any accomplishment of his while in the U.S. Senate. That person, is of course, former Austin mayor Kirk Watson. The first 45 minutes of the debate were quite cordial...maybe the next part will see the candidates mix it up.
UPDATE: An even larger response when Clinton took Obama to task on charges of plagarism, saying "It's change you can Xerox."

Here's the video of Watson on Hardball if you haven't seen it:

I don't think anyone could have predicted that Cuba would be the topic of the first 5 minutes of the debate...at least no one in the press room we are in right now.
And there were clear differences - Hillary wouldn't unless certain demands were met and Obama would with no pretenses.

I am an FOX U student reporter and a senior at SMU. I grew up in Plano, Texas, so the Dallas area has always been my home. I graduate in May 2008 with degrees in journalism and political science. I plan to go into the everchanging world of newspapers, so wish me luck! FOX sent me to New Hampshire to cover the primary and liked me enough to have me stick around for the rest of the primary season.
