Ever walked up to pay your water bill or some other bill to find that the entity has a sign stating that they do not accept cash?  Yet when I look on the front of ANY dollar bill, I find the following statement: "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private"  so I wonder if cash can legally be turned down when attempting to pay an obligation?

I may be wrong, but I thought the law was you had to accept the payment in pennies if that was what the customer wanted to pay with.I have seen signs in places that read they PREFER not to accept cash but this is a new one on me.

I've never confronted that, but it does sound weird. I have seen many place, just the opposite... ONLY cash. A lot of those joints seemed to be owned by illegals.

It bugs me when places stop accepting checks. I don't carry cash because you can't track where you spend it. I don't like using charge cards for everyday purchases, yet there are places that insist you must use a charge card to get services like haircuts, manicures or the like. I can see a time when these same places will stop taking cash because they can't monitor employee theft.

Okay, this is the way it works. A company, a city, anyone, makes a deal with the credit card companies. They are then required to make you use "the card". The card companies give a percentage kickback to whatever company/city they are in bed with. I have been approached many times to sell my soul to "the card", but I won't do it. My clients don't care if I DON'T offer "the convenience", as long as I give them a receipt. Look at it this way it hasn't gotten to the point where you take the mark or you don't buy or sell at all, but the 666 is just around the corner.

cash money is cumbersome and obsolete , why not carry around one of those fifty pound round stones they use in Yap, also known as Wa'ab for locals .

cash money is only good for buying illegal drugs as every bill in America has traces of cocaine on it

Purchasing 2 cell phones, along with service. I started to pay with a check, it didn't have all the info about me printed on it. I was told they couldn't accept the check because of that. OK, no problem, I understand. I put the CASH on the table. I was told that they didn't accept cash. At this time I told them, accept the check, accept the cash, or you know what to do with the phones. They accepted the cash.

Way to go Ironman !

People don't want cash, because they can't read, write, or count, and have no idea how to make change, or write a receipt !

Go furbie! Heres a twist on that.
Has anyone noticed that a lot of "foreign" owned places will not accept cards? I know a chinese person. They say at their take out chinese place they want only cash "no paper trail" to avoid taxes. I URGE EVERYONE TO BOYCOTT THOSE PLACES. Why should we pay taxes and them not do it?

If this is a government entity, it i snot right...If it is a private company, if you don't like it do your business somewhere else.

The government has no constitutional authority to tell a private business what they can accept as payment.

If you use a check card you can run it as a debit card or credit card. If you run it as debit you could find ATM type surcharges, but the business gets to keep more of the money you pay them. if you run it as a credit card, the business keeps less, but Visa and your bank make more.

Personally, if I go to a "mom & pop" I opt for the debit, just because I know it is cheaper for them, but if I go to Wal-Mart/Target, they are going to run it as credit!

Banks use "points" as an incentive for you to use them as credit so they can make more money.

I recently found out that it is a breech of their contract with the credit card company for a merchant to set a "minimum purchase" limit and they can get in trouble for refusing purchases because it is below the limit.

Cute, illusions. More and more people are using their debit cards, instead of checks. Wal-Mart, for example, will take your check, but they instantly turn it into cash.

Places don't want to accept checks, because it's too easy to pass a bad one, then they're stuck without their money (that's what made Wal-Mart change their strategy).

Accepting cash, makes it too easy for employees to steal funds from the till. Throw the bill away, take the cash, etc. And, cash usually means carrying change.

People don't know how to make change anymore, either. They let the registers do it for them.

I stopped by Grandy's this afternoon. My purchase came to 8.57. I handed the girl $10. She gave me back my change (.43), but neglected to give me the dollar bill to go with. Until I said something to her about it.

They have no idea, what should be given back. They just put everything in one hand, along with your receipt.

I really look for them to do away with the cash portion of our monitary system, and just use cards, eventually.

Thanks for all the feedback, I myself don't carry cash that often, thanks to the handy dandy debit card, but I believe the last place I remember seeing a sign like this was at the water utility office and wondered how a government could not accept cash. I'm not totally sure but have talked to others who have maybe once seen something to the same effect.

FYI about credit cards, smaller places sometimes don't carry the service because they pay a percentage on charges. It isn't just so they can avoid taxes.

Yes, they pay a per use (merchant discount) fee and percentage if it is a "credit", or just a percentage if it is a "debit" use.

AmEx has the highest Merchant Discount fee (that is why so many places won't take it).

My doctor's office won't accept debit or credit cards, but gladly welcome cash and checks. That information would have come in handy for my first visit, because all I brought with me was my debit card. I was really surprised and just thought they were behind in the times.

When I managed an office, we were always receiving calls to change our "Merchant" account. By this I mean, that Visa and Master Card, do charge a fee, depending on the volumn (dollar wise) of charges. If you volumn is high enough, you might only pay 2% on your charges. Most times, it's 2.5% or 3%.

Gray, you're correct, Amex is very proud of their fees. If you're very lucky, you might only pay them 4%, otherwise it's usually 5% or higher.

Have a Safe and Happy Easter, everyone.

I was trying to give this Indian gentleman and his wife some beads for payment at the 7-11. The lady became all upset and was speaking in a language I didn't understand. So I poked her in the forehead and said, "Speak English; your pretzels are stale, and how come you don't sell comic books here?!" I left a red dot on her forehead and later found out that she said she was from India and not Arizona. My bad.

I live in Arlington; do all my taxable shopping outside Arlington so my money doesn’t go to Jones. My lifelong dream is to see Jones pack his bags and go back to Arkansas, and as a bonus he'd take "Mayor Mc" Cluck with him though they'd probably kick'em both out of the state. I grew up a Cowboys fan but seeing Jones' willingness to sacrifice the class the organization once had do anything to win along with his ability to steal land just because he has more money has caused me to love to watch'em loose! May they never win another superbowl! ABC-Anyone But the Cowboys!
