I'm really tired of seeing toll road after toll road pop up in the DFW area.  I know that a toll isn't called a tax, but I begin to think about it and I pay a tax on every gallon of gas for roads, I pay a road and bridge "fee" every year to register my truck, and now I have to pay to drive on the road my taxes and "fees" were supposed to build and maintain?  Yet TXDOT is wanting to put up $28mm to build a park in Dallas!  I say we all avoid toll roads as much as possible, stop paying taxes 3 times for the same road!  Tell our representatives to use the money correctly and stop taxing/"feeing" us to death!

sadly enough the toll roads (as they are private enterprise) are the best ones around. If they would cut our taxes the amount we have to spend driving on the tollway I would be all for it.

TXDOT is in trouble - when they bid out work they look at price and price alone - they don't look at the history or the reputation of the contractors bidding it. Buncha asshats.

It may be more like four times:
Road taxes paid to renew license tags
Federal income taxes
Taxes tagged onto fuel purchases
Taxes levied by counties, towns and regions for specific road/bridge construction and maintenance..
And those are just the ones we KNOW about and doesn't even begin to take into consideration tolls, tollways, transit taxes, surcharges levied by transit authorities and abatements given to industries which taxpayers have to subsidize.

Saying a toll road is private enterprise is like saying the USPS is a private business. (truly private built roads excluded...I only know of one.)

We are taxed a lot more than triple.

Toll road taxation is the fairest form of taxation. it is a use tax. You only pay it if you use it.

Some people grow up wanting to be firemen, policemen, lawyers, or even president -

all I ever wanted to be was tax collector !

Think about it - you work for the government, you don't pay taxes yourself, all your necessities are furnished, a telephone is the heaviest thing you ever have to lift, and, you never have to get off your a** to have people bring money to you !

I failed the test 'tho. - they asked the three qualifications in order :
I put lie, cheat & steal

it was steal, lie & cheat !

Maybe next year ! LOL

I have news for you. You are being more than triple taxed. A loaf of bread is tax free. My as- it is. It already has 70 cents tax on a loaf before it becomes a loaf. No way its tax free. Keep track of "ALL" your taxes for a year. It will scare you to death.

Moankie, I've always said : If it's free, I can't afford it !

What I really like is the tax on tax, like anything that has a federal tax on it, the state then charges you tax on that tax !

Its a total mess. I'am all for a federal sales tax. As long as they don't make it like 35%. Look how much we would save just by eliminating most of the IRS. Man do that and stop foreign aid 10% would probably be enough.

I was reading up on some of the gas useage, and found that the US uses 400mm gallons of gas per day. 1/50 and I think Texas would use more than 1/50th is about 8mm gas for Texas per day, now I think the state gets .10 per gallon tax, along with the federal .18 comes out to $800,000 per day in taxes that is supposed to be for roads, now I know we have a lot of roads in Texas but as far as I understand we also get some of our highway funds from that .18 the fed collects as well, so does it really cost us $800k per day to maintain our roads?

Last I heard (it may have been raised) was that we pay $.48/gallon of gas. That isn't much when it is over $3, but when it was $.85 (1999 or 2000) we were paying more in tax than gas...

My personal favorite "news" item this week.
TXDoT and the NTTA finally agree on the semantics so that the construction of the toll road 161 can connect all the way to I-20.
TXDoT made a big stink about the NTTA changing the term that they would be collecting tolls from 52 years to forever and I actually thought that TXDoT was going to expose the NTTA for changing the contract...but alas an agreement was reached and TXDoT was satisfied.
The "compromise" is that TXDoT now gets 1/2 the profit after 52 years. So I still get the pay full price forever, pay gas tax, property tax, road and bridge fee's on my registration, and whatever other tax they can levy...but TXDoT (looking out for me) now gets some "extra" cash from the NTTA to essentially not blow the whistle on the new and improved "forever tolling plan".
For a state that had a multi billion dollar "surplus" Texas sure does know how to step over dollars to pick up dimes.
Coming soon...Texas will raise the tax you pay when you buy a vehicle (currently 6.25%) to pay for "road and bridge maintanance"...

I live in Arlington; do all my taxable shopping outside Arlington so my money doesn’t go to Jones. My lifelong dream is to see Jones pack his bags and go back to Arkansas, and as a bonus he'd take "Mayor Mc" Cluck with him though they'd probably kick'em both out of the state. I grew up a Cowboys fan but seeing Jones' willingness to sacrifice the class the organization once had do anything to win along with his ability to steal land just because he has more money has caused me to love to watch'em loose! May they never win another superbowl! ABC-Anyone But the Cowboys!
