"It won't happen to me!" If that's what you think - think again! Growing up in the hot Texas sun, I have had my share of sun burns from long weekends at the Gulf, but all those burn and peel days finally caught up with me. I recently had a basal cell carcinoma removed from my leg.

It's been taken care of (Dr. Adler was great!) and is healing just fine. But I got a lecture on tanning - one I won't ever forget. So even though we are moving into cooler weather - and you won't be in the triple digits - that doesn't mean your skin is safe. I promise not to be one of those people who moves from Sun Worshipper to Sun Hater - this is just a gentle reminder to USE YOUR SUNSCREEN - EVERY DAY! There... enough said!!

It's amazing what people are exposing their skin to every day, and most people don't even realize it. Kinda off-topic, but just be glad the Earth's magnetic field hasn't disappeared!

That must have been one of the scariest moments of your life to hear that diagnosis.

I am glad to hear that it has been successfully removed, however. I wish you the best in your recovery.

And - along with sunscreen - we should NOT wait until something crops up or we feel "under the weather" to see our doctors. Unfortunately, the "check-ups" days have died. But, a physician can provide a ton more benefit when they become familiar with you. Regular check-ups can help you AND your physician notice subtle changes early, and early detection of anything is always best.

So - I will add advice - wear sunscreen - and GET YOUR CHECK-UPS!!

Its a sham that some people perfer taking the chance by getting that brown tan and put their head in the sand and do not want to thank about that word "cancer". When it happens to them then it will be too late. I only wish that others would learn by ones mistakes. Good luck H.Hays

Heather, so glad everything is OK and you are healing. I will certainly keep you in my prayers as you continue to heal. Thanks for your "gentle reminder". Reminders to take care of ourselves are always good.

Yes - TrueBrit - Max Adler! GREAT guy! And he was very nice while he was lecturing me about my sun/tanning bed exposure - that's why I so white right now. He scared me so much with his warnings, that I am now rethinking my sunworshipping!! :)

I anchor the 6 and 9 p.m. news – along with my dear friend and "work husband" Steve Eagar. Together we have won Edward R. Murrow, AP, and Katie Awards (Thanks for carrying me, Steve!). And I won an Emmy for Best Anchor. But now I have a new role - Mommy! Jeff and I have two little girls - Emmy (Jeff said I have an Emmy - so he wants one, too!) and Lily Rae. The girls are 14 months apart so we definitely have our hands full! But it's wonderful!! I also want to tell you about my volunteer work - speaking to groups about suicide awareness. I lost my former fiance’ to suicide and recently published a book called "Surviving Suicide." You can find out more about that at www.heatherhays.com. Playtime is spent with the cutest chocolate lab ever, Rosco, and my amazing husband, Jeff - and of course, Emmy and Lily Rae. Thanks for checking in and have a great day!
