Jeff and I are so Blessed to share the news that we are expecting a little girl in about ten weeks! We have been together for three years now - and finally our dream of having a family together is coming true. Jeff has a wonderful daughter - Cecily - who I know will make a loving big sister!!

At 40, I wasn't quite sure that I could even become a mother. Jeff & I were prepared for the idea that it may not happen for us - but what a great surprise to learn that we were pregnant!! I hope you don't mind if I share pictures along the way - and in return, I would love to hear your parenting advice.

My cousin held a baby shower for me - and we went around the room asking one piece of advice from every mom. One of the best ones? Pick your battles. Don't fight with your children over every little thing. Someone also suggested keeping a united front with Jeff. So let me know what you think. I have to admit - I am a little (a lot!) nervous - so I appreciate all the supportive emails and suggestions.

Oh, and for the person who asked if I am going weight or pregnant... well, now you know I am pregnant. But I have gained 42 pounds so far. Someone please tell me it comes off quickly!! :)

Congratulations! Babies hold all the knowledge and secrets of the world :-) They just don't have the words to express it. But you'll see when you look into your daughters eyes for the first time.

My advice would be to enjoy her when she gets here. Because being a Mom feels like an eternity some times and it feels like a blink of an eye other times. It really go by too fast. My little man is 6 and I wonder where did all that time go :*(

But it will be exciting to watch this little person grow to take her first steps and to hear her first laugh.

Oh another piece of advice, don't bother buying too many new clothes lol. She will grow out of them so fast! Garage sales and Freecycle can be your best friend lol!

Comes off quicker, if you breast feed. Be careful of what you eat, as this will also flavor the milk!! Get up on your feet and mooove, as soon as the Doc will let you. Take your vitamins and drink lots of water. You should shed a good deal of it in childbirth..at least 20..I am not a Doctor..But, I have "been there done that" Good luck! I will say prayers. This is God's blessing. Take your time and enjoy it. It goes so quickly. Bless you both!

Thank you thank you - for the kind words and prayers. It's really been an incredible journey to watch her grow inside me (love sonogram photos and 4D!!) - and I am sure before I know it she will be a young woman.

Knowing I will have my own daughter has also made me see my Mom in a different light. I don't know what it is - but I guess I see her now as a young woman with me as a little girl... when she knew nothing about taking care of babies and relied on my Grandmother! Now it's my turn!! :)

Congrats to both of you. I'm available for Grandpa by Proxy duty.

Make sure you have a subscription to Parents magazine. It's a little creepy, but once the baby comes it's like those people are watching thru your windows. That's how accurate they are with telling you what your baby should be doing at what age.

Have Jeff get a copy of Bill Cosby's "Fatherhood" since he's been out of the new baby loop for a while.

The "weight"-can't help you there except to say Stay away from Peanut Butter M&M's

I gained 50 with my 1st baby & lost 40 of it in 2 months from breast-feeding. I had no idea you were even near 40, Heather! You clearly have found the fountain of youth! Your new baby will keep you young too. Children are such a blessing & each age brings so much joy & yes, even the teenage years have a lot of joy in them. I wish you & your family all the best. Are you going to tell us possible names or announce the name when your daughter arrives?

Hi!! This is my first baby - and I am SO excited. It's also the first grandbaby on my side of the family (and my mom is going shopping like crazy!!). And I am shopping too - Babies R Us is the best (uh oh - I didn't get fretfall's advice soon enough!!)

And JuneC - 50 pounds huh? The dr. told me I have about another 15 to gain, but I hope it does come off quickly! And thank you for the "fountain of youth" compliment - that made my night! Especially because EXHAUSTED!!

Oh, as for names - we have a list - but we know for sure her middle name will be Elizabeth - that's my middle name (and my grandmothers). But we are open to suggestions!
Thanks again everyone - Have a great weekend!! :)

I think the advice so far is spot on. :)

That name runs in my family, too. It's beautiful. The right 1st name will come to you.

Congradulations to you and Jeff. What a blessing. I have notice when watching you on the news that you are absolutely glow with happiness. You were a beautiful bride and I know you were a wonderful mother. A long time a go you did something for me that was probably no big deal for you but it was very special for me for a lot of reasons. God Bless you and your new family. Send lots of pictures I love pictures

Roberta Elizabeth Roberts. Do you like it? I just thought of it! I won't take any credit when you name your sweet baby girl that. Just own it, and it is yours!!

Don't worry about the weight! My first baby I went into the pregnancy weighing 135 and on my due date I hit 200 pounds. I was so freaked out. 6 years and 3 pregnancies later I am right at 140.

Nursing does help alot, so does running after toddlers! Also, dress the baby cute and don't worry if you have to wear a tent for a while after she is born. Just focus on how cute the babe looks!

I love what Fret said, babies do hold the key to the universe, and it IS obvious when you look into their eyes. But I disagree with the clothes theory!!!

I'm excited for the blessings you are going to have with your new family.

Congrats. Don't be too upset if she seems to prefer Jeff over you as she grows, that is normal for the child to attach a little more to the opposite parent.

As you look at names be sure to play with the initials, you know how cruel kids can be. RER can be pronounced "rear" pretty easily.

Be consistent with discipline from the beginning. It may be cute/funny now, but will it still be in 3 years? Don't make threats you can't or aren't willing to follow through with, it undermines your credibility.

Don't use counting as a means of discipline. Once they are old enough to understand the game, they know "1" means they can keep doing it, "2" lets them know how much longer they can do it before getting to "3", if 3 is where you do something. Many parents treat is as just another # and wait for them to do it again before doing something...just means the kid can do it one more time.

Rather than simply counting how many times they disobey (which is all the above is), increase the punishment with each occurrence.

Talk to them as adults from the beginning. "Baby talk" delays their ability to speak clearly. If you all know foreign languages, use it with the baby just like you would English.

(((Sis))) Well, let me tell ya...I have had 3 boys. All three pregnancies, I didn't know what I was having. They couldn't find "The Organ" lol. Things were bought brand new for my first son. He grew too fast and got so many clothes that he didn't get to wear all of the clothes! I know what being a new mom is like, you buy tons of clothes because they are frou frou and adorable, only to find out that you have so many outfits that they can't wear them in say a month. My second child was bought new clothes but NOT very many. My husband found trash bags full of baby clothes at a garage sale. My son had Cartier, Hilfiger...expensive clothing for what...20 bucks I think. He was set for 6 months! And with my third son, he had my second son's clothing to wear lol. New clothes are nice...when they are older IMO. Just because he had garage sale clothes, doesn't mean he looked like a ragamuffin ;-) I got pictures to prove it too! Should anyone want to see privately what my son looked like as an infant!

Sweetie, I just looked at the pics in your albums. Did you know it looks like you're going to have a baby???? Dang!!

Congratulations to you both!!

And GW has some excellent tips posted above. I know all five of my kids learned to read, write and speak way ahead of schedule just because we spoke to them in plain English, taught them how to read as soon as they showed an interest and started them writing as soon as we determined which hand they were going to favor. Wound up with one southpaw, three righties and one ambidextrous!

And thank you for sharing those great pics!

I'm happy for you and Jeff. I don't have any advice to give since I don't have kids of my own, but I do wish you much happiness and contentment. I look forward to the pictures you will share.

I anchor the 6 and 9 p.m. news – along with my dear friend and "work husband" Steve Eagar. Together we have won Edward R. Murrow, AP, and Katie Awards (Thanks for carrying me, Steve!). And I won an Emmy for Best Anchor. But now I have a new role - Mommy! Jeff and I have two little girls - Emmy (Jeff said I have an Emmy - so he wants one, too!) and Lily Rae. The girls are 14 months apart so we definitely have our hands full! But it's wonderful!! I also want to tell you about my volunteer work - speaking to groups about suicide awareness. I lost my former fiance’ to suicide and recently published a book called "Surviving Suicide." You can find out more about that at www.heatherhays.com. Playtime is spent with the cutest chocolate lab ever, Rosco, and my amazing husband, Jeff - and of course, Emmy and Lily Rae. Thanks for checking in and have a great day!
