Calling all Moms (Dads, you are great, too - but right now I have a question for Moms!!). How do you do it? How do you balance your kids and a career? I am on my second week back at work - and while I am thankful that I love my job and the people I work with - it's still tough leaving that sweet little bundle of joy (who is now 9 weeks old) at home.

I really do have a supportive workplace - but to the Moms who don't or who have to work more than one job, my heart goes out to you! I am getting lots of great advice - and I am doing all I can to enjoy every minute with Emmy while I am at home. I have definitely let other things go - who cares if the house is clean, if the car is washed, or if I am caught up on the laundry - that stuff is last in line to get done!!

PS - Emmy is now 14 pounds! This will be Jeff's first Father's Day with Emmy and I am planning lots of wonderful surprises for both of them!

Hi! Oh - my heart goes out to you on Monday!! Don't you wish time would stand still and the kids would stay small and we could be with them always?? You will do great at work - and your kids will have a wonderful time at day care. I guess we both just have to be happy for the amount of time we have already spent with them!!

Good luck at work!!

Oh - you did not mess up the blog!! :)

Aw! I hope ya'll have a wonderful weekend, Heather! :) I know you'll take a lot of pictures - be sure to share! *s*

I am thankful for the way things worked out for me & my rugrats. I quit the rat race when my youngest was 7-8 years old and was fortunate enough to stay with him until recently; he's almost 15. We're back to planning for college and retirement! Plus, I know I have to start letting go at some point or I will get a bad case of empty-nest blues... and far sooner than I want to admit!

Hey Heather*S* It isn't easy, but You find the balance eventually. I did it with 4 kids.
You find the right babysitter, or Daycare. As they grow older, You work things with the kids, making sure they are responsible, around the house, showing them how to help take care of their own rooms, and helping with dinner, as per their age. It changes, as they grow. When You have time off, take it! Enjoy it, with the kids.
If they are sick, don't be afraid to take off work.
Do things with them at school and on weekends, but don't overload Yourself.
And it still isn't easy.
You are already on track, knowing that it doesn't matter if the house is clean and the car is washed etc.
Hugs and best wishes

I couldn't balance it. I stayed home with my two, and am still home with them. I drive an older car, have a smaller home than their friend's homes. But the time I get to have with them everyday is priceless!

I worked nights (6-10 or 11pm), and weekends with my first, left special time for Daddy to be the caregiver...as a result they're very close. It was hard leaving every day tho! And I saw my husband less as well which was also tough.

But I did that knowing the goal was to be home with the kids...and by the time my second was born (mine are 2 years apart) we were ready and I quit working to stay home.

Now that the yougest is almost to school age my days will be free and I will likely get another PT job. But wow...it was great being there for them when they were small...:)

All I can say is that it does get easier. My daughter is 12 now but I remember feeling so sad that first day going back to work. I get alot of satisfaction from working, too, that's who I am, so I think she learns from that, too. And when they get older and not so dependent on you, it gets easier and smoother. I look back though and wouldn't have minded staying home for at least the first five years. I think kids can be "OK" either way - with working or stay-at-home moms but I see the years slipping away and kind of wish I had made a way to stay home during those young years. You'll find your way!

Hi Everyone! I have been back at work 4 weeks now - and today Emmy is 12 weeks old! She smiles ALL the time - and is even starting to laugh! It's SO inredibly sweet. It is hard to leave her every day - but like, just1DT, I get satisfaction from work - and I hope Emmy sees that as she grows up. I want her to be independent and self-reliant... and I hope to teach her that.

I know it will get easier - but bottomline, we all have to find what works for us - and make that the best choice for our families. So thanks for all the great advice.

Now I am curious - SRoberts - How is it going back at work? It's been a couple of weeks, are you settling in?

I anchor the 6 and 9 p.m. news – along with my dear friend and "work husband" Steve Eagar. Together we have won Edward R. Murrow, AP, and Katie Awards (Thanks for carrying me, Steve!). And I won an Emmy for Best Anchor. But now I have a new role - Mommy! Jeff and I have two little girls - Emmy (Jeff said I have an Emmy - so he wants one, too!) and Lily Rae. The girls are 14 months apart so we definitely have our hands full! But it's wonderful!! I also want to tell you about my volunteer work - speaking to groups about suicide awareness. I lost my former fiance’ to suicide and recently published a book called "Surviving Suicide." You can find out more about that at www.heatherhays.com. Playtime is spent with the cutest chocolate lab ever, Rosco, and my amazing husband, Jeff - and of course, Emmy and Lily Rae. Thanks for checking in and have a great day!
