I admit it - I have done it! Rolled my eyes, tensed up, even tossed a look at the family flying with a baby. But now - I am the one with the baby! If you read Jason Overstreet's blog "Vacation Observations" - you know he's not necessarily fond of being on a flight with babies... so that got me thinking about an upcoming trip with my baby. Jeff, Emmy, and hit the skies in just a few weeks to go to my little brother's East Coast wedding. So - are other flyers going to think my little angel will make their trip miserable? NO WAY!

But - just in case we run into some "traveling with baby turbulence" - anyone have any tips on how to make the trip fun for the baby - as well as other travelers? I think she will do just fine - she is already a great traveler. We just got back from a 2200 mile car trip - and she was perfect (really she was! I was the one who was cranky!). We visted the baby's great grandmothers, great aunts/uncles, and cousins - and had a great time. I think she fussed maybe 5 minutes the entire trip - and, no, she didn't sleep the whole time in the car!!  :)

So - by the end of the summer, Emmy will have conquered planes and automobiles - so here's an early warning to all you train travelers - that will be her next journey! Safe travels everyone!

Ooooppss - thanks Martucci - for pointing out that I left out a word... "Jeff, Emmy, and I hit the skies..." :)

And, no, Martucci - I will not pack my baby in my suitcase!

I recommend waiting until the very last minute to board the plain. That way, if she is fussy, you wont be confined to a small area for an extended time with her while everyone gives you the evil eye! At least if you wait to get on you'll be taking off very soon after and its that much less time you have to be there to begin with. Also, you could try a week or so in advance to change her nap schedule around so that it falls in place during the flight. Please dont board that flight though when she's ready to eat. The bouncing around and air pressure could upset her tummy and make it miserable for everyone!! Good Luck!

Great tips - Thanks! I had no idea about boarding on an empty tummy. I probably would have done just that - thinking if I fed her right away on the plane - it would distract her from the flight. Also love the "waiting to board" tip - I think that will work well for both me and Emmy!! :)

Aww hope you have a great trip. I'm sure all will go well.If anyone gets annoyed for any reason thats their problem, she's a baby and they should expect things happening. They can always go rent a private plane if they do not know how to deal with life. Have fun!

its not fair to expect a baby to behave other than anything that they are.... a baby

So if you put them in a situation that is not for them.................

Make sure you keep a pacifier close at hand during take off and landing. Gently stroking under her chin to encourage chewing the pacifier if she fusses. The change in air pressure at these two times are the points where I have noticed babies and kids to be bothered the most.

Enjoy your vacation. Sure glad to have you back on the air.

I anchor the 6 and 9 p.m. news – along with my dear friend and "work husband" Steve Eagar. Together we have won Edward R. Murrow, AP, and Katie Awards (Thanks for carrying me, Steve!). And I won an Emmy for Best Anchor. But now I have a new role - Mommy! Jeff and I have two little girls - Emmy (Jeff said I have an Emmy - so he wants one, too!) and Lily Rae. The girls are 14 months apart so we definitely have our hands full! But it's wonderful!! I also want to tell you about my volunteer work - speaking to groups about suicide awareness. I lost my former fiance’ to suicide and recently published a book called "Surviving Suicide." You can find out more about that at www.heatherhays.com. Playtime is spent with the cutest chocolate lab ever, Rosco, and my amazing husband, Jeff - and of course, Emmy and Lily Rae. Thanks for checking in and have a great day!
