...in the case of my daughters - lots of looking at baby name books, studying family trees, some give and take, and finally choices that made both Jeff and I (and hopefully the girls!) - happy!! All parents have stories of how they came up with their child's name - and I would love to hear yours... but first you have to read about ours...

When we found out we were pregnant with our daughter (Fall 2006) - we were SO excited. And I started highlighting names in baby books. Some of the favorites? Hannah, Hudson, Presley, Hunter, Ranger (um, guess which are Jeff's adds!!). There was also Georgia, Scarlett, and Vivian (we had just watched "Gone with the Wind."  :)

But all those names went away - after I won an Emmy. I emailed my cousin, Robin,  to tell her - and she emailed back.. and said that's the perfect name for our baby (Robin LOVES taking credit for choosing her name!!). Jeff immediately fell in love with the name, saying since I have an Emmy - he wants one, too. Emmy's middle name? Elizabeth - mine and my grandmother's.

And the name "Emmy" fits our little angel perfectly! She is SUCH a doll!! She is almost 11 months old now - is a great swimmer (underwater for 4 seconds!!), smart, funny, flirtatious, the fastest crawler (and almost walker) you have ever seen.  I can't believe she will be one in April. Whew... how time flies.

It flies so quickly Emmy's sister will be here at the end of June. So - how did we come up with Lily's name? Well, a few weeks ago we were sitting in the dr.'s office. We were minutes away from finding out the sex... so we decided right then to come up with a name. The boy's name... well, I'll keep that secret in case I have a boy next time!!  :)  But for a girl, we wanted something that sounded good with Emmy and Cecily - my 14 year old step daughter. Jeff was quickly saying "no" to every name I suggested (in truth I said names I knew he wouldn't like, so that when I said Lily he would say "Yes!").

After I said "Lily," he immediately said, "How about LilyRae?" Ray is my dad's name - and then he added "West" for his dad's middle name. LilyRay West Roberts. That's a lot of name for a little baby - but I think she's be able to handle it!! :)

OK - I know I went on and on... but it's fun thinking about how we came up with their names. Thanks for doing a story on baby names, Jeff Crilley!!  :)  Now it's YOUR turn - tell me your baby name story!!

When I waw pregnant with my oldest daughter(way before sonograms) we didn't have a clue if it was going to be a girl or a boy..but we had gone to the dog races in Sioux City, South Dakota (we were there at a meeting) and we bet on a dog named Babe Shannon and it won and we won a couple of bucks and when our daughter was born she had a name......so we always told her she was named after a dog but in reality I worked at an MDO and there was a cute little girl named Shannon so we had already considered it as a name..winning at the races just convinced us to name her Shannon

There were two rules when picking names...1) it had to be a location. 2) it had to follow the alphabet. Soooo, we have Aspen, Brooklynn and Cabry (which is a town in Ireland). We also have cute shirts that state- Kid A, Kid B, and Kid C! See there's a method to our madness!

Playing the "name game" is fun. My family played it well. My Dad's middle name was Ray, one of my brother's first name is Ray, his son's middle name is Ray, my oldest son's middle name is Ray, my youngest daughters middle name is Rae and my middle name is......

How'd you know?

DaewnGoddess - what a cute story - one that Shannon I am sure loves (or rolls her eyes at if she is a teen!!).

Krissy - I love the Kid A,B,C shirts - they have onesies at Destination Maternity that say Thing One and Thing Two - LOVE those!!

When my husband and I moved into our first house, I worked so hard all day just to make it feel like a home. When my husband came home from work that first day he was amazed. The first thing he did was to greet me with a hug and said to me "Thank you for making this house my haven." Then he paused and said, "No, it isn't this house, YOU are my haven!" I thought that was the most precious thing anyone had ever called me, so we decided right then and there that our firstborn daughter would be named Haven. Turns out, she truly has a peaceful loving spirit that suits her name perfectly!

Tara's labor advanced quickly, starting at 5:20, 5 minutes apart for about 25 minutes. Then, increased in strength and frequency to about 2 minutes they made their move to get into the car and head off to the hospital.

While reaching the garage (only about 20 steps, however with strong contractions and the water breaking a difficult long 20 steps), Tara informed Billy that she was having the baby now. Imagining that it must be too early, Billy encouraged Tara to be strong and she was doing great. Little did he know know how great she was really doing! With the urge to push Tara pushed as she positioned herself on the concert (between the Lexus and Explorer in the garage!) Billy pulled Tara's pants off and saw that his son was crowning and with one more push from Tara, Billy grabbed
his head and shoulder and pulled him into his beatiful life!

That is how our son Carson was named!

KK - I was thinking about ya!! :)
I am so surprised how many people I know have the name Ray/Rae as a middle name. But they have ALL said, "Thanks for including me in Lily's name!" :)

Now Jeff and I just have to decide how to spell her name... he wrote it in the concrete poured in our backyard last week - Lilly... um, only one L, Daddy!!

When my husband and I first found out that I was pregnant (July 28, 2007) that same day we had went to Barnes & Nobles and purchased 2 baby name books. I took one and went thru it with a pink highlighter and my husband took the other and went thru it with a yellow highlighter. We both highlighted names that we liked. Then we switched books and went thru them and did the same thing (highlight names that we liked). When we got done the names that we both liked were highlighted orange and we got a sheet of paper and wrote all those names down. It took us 4 months to narrow it down to one name. We didn't want a common name like you hear everyday but we also didn't want a name that no one could pronounce. We finally settled on Alyssa Mackenzie. She has her Dad's initals. She is due (with a scheduled c-section) on March 27th.

My oldest is named after his dad. after i divorced his dad i married a man with the same name as my first hubby and my first son so when i gave birth to my last child...a son, i refused to even think of naming him after his father. My husband and the anesthesiologist named him Spencer with his dads middle name Douglas. My hubby and i could not agree on our daughters name so he gave her rebecca as her fist name and i gave her elizabeth for her middle...no family connections just what we thought were beautiful names. :)

p.s. we could not agree on my youngest sons name because my husband was throwing out names like Thor, Clyde and Gunther. so that is why we had not picked a name when he was born.

Lily Ray is so pretty, I love it.

My niece is named Hannah. Please no longer even consider that name!

She had 3 Hannahs in her kindergarten class (one even had the same last name as her! They decided to put them in different classrooms, of course).

Good Morning! We take off for vacation today - please keep your fingers crossed I brought enought food and toys to keeo Emmy (and Jeff!) entertained on the flight to Hawaii!! :)

Thanks for all the stories - TXimplant - the Annalise is great - and so when you do have children of your own - what a great story you have to tell them!!

And congrats to AJ on the upcoming baby - March 27th will be here before you know it!!And I love that baby has her Daddy's initials. :)

Mommy 2 Be - WOW - 9 weeks now! You have a long way to go - but enjoy every minute of being pregnant. You are so Blessed (and I know I am too) - to be having a baby - so enjoy it. Oh, and take notes or keep a journal about the experience. That advice was given to me and I should have listened more closely because there is already SO much I forgot about being pregnant with Emmy. The first kick, the first time she got the hiccups - so now I keep a journal of things she is doing so I can tell her later when she took her first steps, her first word - all those wonderful things!!

Aloha - see you in a week!! :)

I named my son after a comedian instead of the name my mother in law picked out. Never tick off a woman in labor!!

I anchor the 6 and 9 p.m. news – along with my dear friend and "work husband" Steve Eagar. Together we have won Edward R. Murrow, AP, and Katie Awards (Thanks for carrying me, Steve!). And I won an Emmy for Best Anchor. But now I have a new role - Mommy! Jeff and I have two little girls - Emmy (Jeff said I have an Emmy - so he wants one, too!) and Lily Rae. The girls are 14 months apart so we definitely have our hands full! But it's wonderful!! I also want to tell you about my volunteer work - speaking to groups about suicide awareness. I lost my former fiance’ to suicide and recently published a book called "Surviving Suicide." You can find out more about that at www.heatherhays.com. Playtime is spent with the cutest chocolate lab ever, Rosco, and my amazing husband, Jeff - and of course, Emmy and Lily Rae. Thanks for checking in and have a great day!
