My dad used to say “don’t believe anything you hear, and only believe half of what you see.”  (…and yes, I do realize he was probably quoting something he heard)  But there is merit to the phrase, wherever it comes from.  We skeptical reporters try and independently confirm EVERYTHING we hear, or at least tell you who said it.

That leads me to the next part of the quote… “…only believe half of what you see.”  This part is a really big deal!  Especially if based on “your” eye witness testimony puts someone in jail for decades!   I hope you take the opportunity to check out my story on police photo lineups.  It will show you first hand how what you think you saw… may not really be what (or who) you saw at all.

Thirteen people in Dallas County alone in the last six years have been cleared by DNA evidence, meaning the “eye witnesses” who said these people committed a crime, in fact DID NOT.   You have to give the Dallas Police Department credit in trying something new with sequential photo lineups.  At least it’s a step in the right direction.   And that reminds me of something else my dad used to say “, lead, follow or get the hell out of the way.”

With the great number of being wrongly accused by someone who is upset or mad over a situation that happened to them why can the police dept. not use deceased people. Example - if six faces are to be used why not have the one real person believed to be guilty and the other five deceased. This would greatly drop the rate of people being wrongly identified under pressure by police to chose someone. The police as well as media seem to care more about the glory than the truth.

James,
I thought this was a very interesting story. I wonder if the results would be the same if you were to stage a live event rather than just showing a tv video on a flat screen.

Great story Mr. Rose! I applaud the exoneration of those individuals wrongfully convicted. However, I am saddened because no one has ever addressed the issue for the individuals who have been wrongfully convicted in Dallas County for offenses where DNA evidence can't be used to prove their innocence. The cases of Joyce Ann Brown and Lenell Geter, garned national media attention, but I’m absolutely, positively, sure there are many more such cases where incorrect eyewitness testimony has resulted in convictions of those who aren't guilty of anything.
