More than 260 thousand Texans have concealed handgun licenses. If that’s how many licenses law abiding citizens have to carry their guns concealed, it makes you wonder how many guns criminals have? Governor Perry picked a hot topic. I mean, after all who can be against the right to defend yourself. It’s kind of like the ole gottcha question “are you still beating your wife?” Either way you answer it’s a problem. Most of the people I talked to about this issue agreed there has to be a fine line between law enforcement and “the right to defend yourself.” The water gets a little muddy when you start thinking about a citizen making split second decisions to “shoot or not shoot”. Cops have enough trouble doing that and they train for it constantly. But on the other hand why would you want to get a license to carry when you’re more likely to get in trouble by accidentally taking the gun someplace you are not supposed to… Can you say Barry Switzer?

What do you think?  Really?

My argumement would be the reason we have police is to defend citizens and at the same time concealed guns could do better harm to police, or others. I used to take martial arts and the best advice they gave was to walk away from a situation. The only time I fired a gun was in the military. I am working on becoming a police officer and I would never own a concealed gun as a public citizen. There was a guy in one of my classes that asked the professor about being stopped and having a gun in a car one time. All I could think was you aren't even a cop and you carry a gun and are asking what if I get pulled over? I saw a little girl in public with a gun one time and that was scary. She was trying to fend off a group of people and could have hurt an innocent person.

Cops can't be everywhere. I wonder if there are statistics anywhere on how many people die in gun accidents vs how many violent crimes are prevented with guns.

I think that the CHL is a good idea. Why disarm law abiding citizens when the criminals are gonna carry one way or the other?
