I've gotten so many comments about the interview I did with James Thorpe, I decided I should weigh in.... Thorpe is the guy that police say pushed or forced auto salesman Jack Phinney out of a moving truck to his death on 75 Monday evening, while test driving a truck.

Everyone keeps asking me "Was he crazy?" Crazy like a fox maybe, but not mentally ill crazy. He was just too cocky, controlling and manipulative. If you saw the interview he tried to control everything from how he was going to wear the microphone to what and when I would be allowed to ask a question. (many of my colleagues were surprised at the patience I showed. Actually, I was too.) In my opinion someone that controlling is a master manipulator... in his case it's probably something he has honed his whole life. To me, that's not mental illness. That is just evil. It was clear to me he was lying. At first he said he wanted to find the guy that killed his friend. Yes, he actually had the audacity to say Jack (the man he's accused of killing) was his friend. He assumed someone ran over Jack and therefore they were responsible for his death. When I told him police said he was not hit by anyone he changed his story to.... Jack jumped. Let's just say if "his friend" Jack fell out of the vehicle, why didn't Thorpe stop? Instead he just kept going until cops caught up with him, several hours later.

I noticed he did seem to get off on trying to intimidate me and the jail guards... but shooting the bird at me at the end of the interview? That was pretty juvenile.

When he said Jack jumped out of the truck, I asked what was he talking about what did he say? He acted as if he was insulted that I would ask to hear a man's last words. That's the question that lead to him to slam down the phone, get up and walk out. I'm guessing he got frustrated because the more he talked the less I believed his story, and he couldn't control my line of questioning. If I even thought the guy was mentally ill I probably wouldn't be talking about this. I do realize some people are mentally ill-- and they need help. And they should NOT be exploited or made fun of. But in my humble, non clinical opinion this guy is not CRAZY.

BTW, let's not confuse mental illness with stupidity either. Thorpe left an expired driver's license with the dealership before he went on the test drive with Phinney.

You nailed it - not insane, just controlling and cocky. At least it sounds like his girlfriend isn't letting him have a free pass.

I heard that on WFAA he blamed Bush for his situation and actions. Sadly enough, more and more people are blaming the president (not both the president AND congress) for their situation as if we live in a dictatorship.

Good interview though - that dude creeped me out - right before bed too, thanks for that. Reminds me of the offenders I counseled in college - buttheads mixed with a touch of sociopathic narcissism. He's where he belongs.

I had a question about that James. How was he able to test drive a vehicle with a license that had been expired 10 years? Every test drive I've ever done I had to provide a legal license and proof of insurance.

Was he a former AIG exec???

Good question, Phrank. I wondered about that too. I just bought a vehicle & they wouldn't let me test drive it until they obtained & copied my current, valid TX driver's license AND my insurance card.

That dude was creepy.

'let's not confuse mental illness with stupidity either'

James, there is mental illness, stupid and just down right evil. I think this goober falls into the evil category.

Looks like you guys have been doing some digging on him and I will miss it at 5:30. Hope it is on again at 9 or 10. Something tells me he does not have any good conduct medals.

I think you are right, this guy is not crazy just stupid. He came off at first like he was some kind of gangster, almost seemed to be threatening you. Do rednecks have a mafia now?

I agree with James. SOME people are so SMART, that they can feign mental illness, and LOOK dumb.

I only wish some bloggers could be that "smart" to be so "dumb".

You’re VERY accurate when describing his controlling and manipulative ways. Just listening to this guy talk was disturbing. I know there are evil people out there, but to really see it….is just scary. I don’t know how you kept your “cool” while interviewing this lunatic! The fact that you were so calm only made it more obvious that this guy is pure evil.

stupid is as stupid does....

btw, when i sold cars, we were not required at our dealership to ask for license for a test drive. i always did as a safety precaution (being female ya know). i took the license and made a copy and placed it on my desk when i left for a test drive with someone. that way, someone knew who i was with. license and insurance only came into play when the deal was done. laws may have changed or individual dealerships sets their own rules...i'm not sure...but that's my $.02 on it.

I watched the interview, and that guy scared me. He's not crazy, but he is just about as evil as they come.
He failed on trying to act crazy so he shouldn't try it again in court. They don't give oscars for the worse performance yet.

I don't believe in mental illness so I discounted that first off.

This guy is like many I have seen when I worked as a paralegal. They are controlling, combatative and are habitual liars.

James, I know a guy that's writing a script on Texas murderers. This character would be an interesting study.

Too bad Paul Adrian wasn't still around to peep into this guys background. I'm sure there's an interesting trail of debris wherever he has been.

James I am so glad you wrote this. I have watched your interview over and over and over, you are right, he isn't mentally ill, he is a master manipulator. In my opinion, he is using those manipulation skills to make himself appear "crazy" in hoping he can walk on the crazy ticket. He isn't crazy, he is a manipulative, vile and evil person. I hope they find out what happened, but with a habitual liar like he is and the victim dead, we may never really know what happened those last few moments in the truck. My husband and I have thought that perhaps Thorpe may of told Phinney he was going to drive the truck off the High 5 and maybe Phinney tried to get out of the truck- we will never really know, but there is one thing for sure... James Thorpe needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and doesn't need any "crazy" breaks.

I didn't like the way he was treating you and you kept your composure better than I would have, if the Lewisville and Richardson Police
beat him (which I doubt unless he was resisting arrest... which he probably was)- they should have beat him more :)

Friend of mine stated that his girlfriend's Mother worked at that dealership that the guy that was killed. I asked him if that she may have known the victim. He stated he was not sure. She worked there off and on at times when they needed extra help there.

It was a great interview to see unedited!! Can not believe you held your "cool" like you did..I wanted to beat him myself he was so cocky!! And to try and control the interview like he was some kind of important person! He's the kind we DO NOT need back on the street regardless of crazy, mental illness or anything else...those kind are just down right scary.

You did all that was and could be expected out of any reporter just trying to do a job...and I must say a good job at that!

I bet the guy has a rap sheet a mile long. A lot of these guys can't make it in society and they can't wait to get back in. He just used this crime for his ticket to the big house. Now we get to support him in prison, what a POS.

The criminal was right on one thing. He didn't and probably couldn't push the salesman from the truck. I thought about it and reached this conclusion.

I bet he pulled a gun on the guy and told him to jump or be shot. If it were me I'd have taken my chance and wrecked the truck, but I'm thinking the salesman jumped and didn't expect do die.

Its sad I went to school with James and he never seems crazy or ever showed this side. Such a sad day for all involved.
