Israel has an absolute right to protect its citizens from rocket attacks.  And that is exactly what it's doing in its 11 day offensive.  One eighth of Israel's citizens are now living within range of Palestinian rockets. Some say Israel's response has gone too far (100 Palestinian civilians dead) .  A U-N school was apparently hit by Israeli bombs today.  The difference though is stark.   While Israel tries to avoid civilian casualties, Hamas celebrates them.

As I'm writing this (2 pm Friday) there are still 24-hundred seats left for the Cardinals game against the Falcons.  We (voters) gave this team a new stadium and helped to line the Bidwill's collective pockets.  They need to buy up the remaining tickets to lift a tv blackout as a goodwill gesture to the public.  They would be shooting themselves in the foot not to allow the community to share in a big moment, the franchise's first home playoff game since the '40's.

The energy department says our use of oil has gone flat for the first time in 20 years. Americans are changing their driving habits, buying more fuel efficient cars.  And even though gas prices are low, few expect them to stay that way.  At the same time OPEC is trying to curb production to drive up prices. The handwriting is on the wall.  In the not too distant future, we can give OPEC the finger.  We won't need their stinking, polluting product to get around.  Won't that be great!  It couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys!

It's one thing to invest your money and get ripped off by a stranger.  It's another thing to invest with a trusted friend and get bilked.  Bernard Madoff is accused of bilking investors and banks $50 billion.  One regulator says the losses and deception involved are unprecedented.  But do you ever notice, no one questions how the money is being made when the good times are rolling.  Only when loses start to cascade down, does anyone ask questions?

So we are going to do the American thing after-all!  A vote of the people up or down on photo radar on state freeways.  Great!  I urged a vote in an earlier blog. When a program becomes as widespread as this one has, the people have a right to have their say. And if enough signatures are collected, they will.  I think that's a good thing for the people, the voters and the photo enforcement program.  If people say, yes, this is what we want, I think they will be more amenable to photo enforcement - rather than simply having it crammed down their throats.

To the many who have served and sacrificed for this country... I simply want to say - thank you!

In the age of the internet, I can't believe we've got people spending hours in line to vote.  If we can bank on line, can't we figure out a secure way to vote on line?  If people want to increase voter turnout, this would be the answer.  Mail in ballots are fine, but they clearly are not the best option.  Of course,  there's going to be concern over the possibility votes could be tampered with.  But again, we've got to figure out a secure way for people to vote on line.

As predicted on this blog a year ago, the photo radar cancer would spread once politicians got a sniff of the money to be made.  And here we go.  100 new cameras up and running. Everywhere you drive... cameras will be watching.  Even a brief lapse of awareness, you could be dinged with a $165 dollar ticket. Hopefully, someone next election cycle will put this on the statewide ballot and let the voters decide if this is what they really want their freeways to become....a speed trap!

I hope in the end this presidential election will reflect the choice between two qualified candidates, not the choice between a white or black candidate.  Sizing up McCain and Obama, there are great policy differences between the two.  Will people who vote for McCain, somehow be painted as racist? There are plenty of reasons a McCain voter could reject Obama - for reasons (taxes, experience) that have absolutely nothing to do with race.  If the presidential race is close... or McCain is ahead, will pundits and pollsters immediately claim racism or the so called Bradley Effect? There better be clear proof of that before someone makes that charge.

Close, but not quite.  A month is an eternity in an politics. A lot can happen, things out of the candidates control.  Take for instance the economic crisis. Terrible for McCain because he has an (R) after his name.  But there could be another unforeseen event before election day.  If nothing dynamic happens to change the race.... McCain is probably done.  But I've seen too many elections tighten right before voting begins.  I still see a close election.

There is something poetic in OJ Simpson's conviction in Nevada... 13 years to the day since he was acquitted in Los Angeles of the double murder of his wife and Ronald Goldman.  Justice delayed is justice denied?  Maybe not in this case.  OJ's hubris finally got him.  He thought he could escape any consequences, thumb his nose at the legal system.  Get away with murder!  He did for 13 years ,until his arrogance finally caught up with him. And justice finally caught up with him.  Good for the Goldman's.  Good for the Brown's.  Good for OJ.

....She scored with plain spoken Americans and Republicans worried that she didn't have the smarts. She did not win over any Democrats.... and she will never win over the intellectual elite.  But Thursday night was a good night for Sarah Palin. She gives McCain the opportunity to fight on, stemming her recent drag on his campaign.  In the end, Sarah Palin won't win or lose this race for McCain.

America loves reality t-v?  They're going to get a healthy dose tonight (6pm Arizona time).  V-P debates typically don't matter much.  But with Palin on the ropes after some shaky answers recently, Americans will be watching closely to see if she is,  first, vice-presidential and more importantly, presidential.  McCain at 72 and a cancer survivor puts her qualifications under the microscope.  She's in a tough spot.  And McCain needs her to have a strong performance tonight.

It's far too simplistic to say the government shouldn't bailout the financial markets.  The cost of doing nothing and allow the world economy descend into chaos is far more costly.  If you want more home foreclosures, countless people out of work, and a deep, prolonged recession.... urge Washington politicians to say no to the bailout. Otherwise, like it or not, this is the best plan we've got. And now is no time to drag feet and engage in political posturing.

The death of Phoenix police officer Barry Scott at a charity boxing event is tragic.  But how could this have happened.  In the fights between firefighters and police, contestants were wearing protective head and body gear. And refs were apparently very protective, stopping many of the fights early to prevent injury.  I am very curious as to what may have caused this.  And so far, police aren't telling us much.  The medical examiners report should give us answers.  Until then, our thoughts and prayers go to officer Scott's wife and family.
