It's the same struggle.. different weekend.

My friends come to visit from out of state, but I can never decide where to go .. or what to do with them. Oh, the pressure!

You see, I want to give them a REAL taste of all things Texas. I feel like they need to leave here knowing why lone star living really IS the best.

Of course, the restaurants are easy. So is the shopping. And, of course, i'm always up for taking in one of the exciting sporting events going on across the Metroplex...

But what i'm looking for are some unique ideas.  I'm talking those "secret treasures" that REALLY show off the greatness of North Texas and all it represents.

Can you help? (Something tells me i've come to the right place.)

Hmmm! That is a tall order to fill. We don't have any beaches to speak of, but we've got the lakes and water sports if you're into that.

I know this sounds kind of lame, but with all the traveling I do, I have noticed that we have the best theatres in town.

Have they ever been to Dallas? I suppose you could go to Dealey Plaza and show some history and then go to Gators for lunch.

Dallas has flat terrain, so it's not like you can hiking or mountain biking in the Blue Mesa, but you could go biking around White Rock.

If they could wait a couple of weekends, you could take them to the state fair! That's always fun!

Texas BBQ! You can't go wrong with that. There is a place called Lakeway over by Lake Lavon that has great BBQ. It's a shack on the side of the road, but I swear it's the best.

Texas is all over the Stockyards area. Take them when they can see the Longhorns being herded thru the streets, great pic oppurtunity there. Another is the Cowgirl Museum located by the Livestock show area, the Omni theater is cool too. Railhead Barbeque in Ft. Worth has the best ribs you can eat,the meat is so tender and tasty. The Botanic Gardens off University. These are just a few that we have here in Ft. Worth.

well...i kinda agree with cowboyswife...if you are wanting to do the whole "ya'll thang"...Ft Worth is great for that...lots of great western type stuff...history etc...
Megan...i figured with you being a local celebrity, you'd have all of these "connections"...mabye you could pull some strings and give them a behind the scenes kinda tour...ya know like, take them to Fair Park, and show them where they keep Big Tex...they should be starting to break him out of storage...take them out to the Stars Center and your use celebrity status to get them some swag...mabye meet some of the team....take them to the new Cowboys stadium...you guys could do a "hard hat" tour type thing....let them get a sneak peek at the new stadium...take them to Deep Ellum and let them look at the "freak show"...etc....i'm sure that you'll be an awesome tour guide....kinda wish i could come with you guys......are they here from California???......

well if you have already taken them to all of the places within the metroplex that you want to go then i like to take quests out into the countryside...to me that is where you get the true feeling of Texas...here is an example of a place a little over an hour away that one can walk around in pretty scenery & visit with friends & not feel rushed or crowded:)

Billy Bob's is good, but if you REALLY want a part of the old west, go around the corner in Stockyards to the White Elephant Saloon.

Of course, if you really want your friends to experience Texas, I'd leave North Texas and head to the Hill Country. Take them to Enchanted Rock or float down the Guadalupe and stop for supper at the Grist Mill in Gruene - then go dancing at Gruene Hall!

I think I see a special assignment in Megans future... "Texas, the whole enchilada"...

FOX4 can charter Mach80s jet, and Megan tan take tourist to all the cool places in Texas.

Some in the hill country have been mentioned, but get off the beaten path (I-35) and head out to Llano for some BBQ and bluebonnets, and dont forget some dude ranch activity at the YO Ranch; Fly into El Paso and have dinner and margaritas at Cattleman's (be sure to watch the sunset from the back porch) then head out to Hueco tanks state park, Fort Davis, and the Marfa lights, and check into the spa at Lajitas ; jet into Houston and visit NASA, San Jacinto (where Texas was born) and the Battleship Texas (Flagship of the Normandy invasion) and skirt over to Galveston on a ferry for a whopping fisherman's platter at Gaido's; Fly into Lubbock on a Tech football weekend and do some tailgating in their parking lot, gotta go on up to Amarillo and see the Caddilac Ranch and have the 72oz steak at the Big Texan...

I could go on for hours. Will you take me with you?

OFF TOPIC***
coleminer1959- You must be new here and we don't like your kind. Go blog elsewhere.

Megan- We love you and your sense of humor. Our morning is not complete without Good Day.

ON TOPIC***

For a change of pace, take them on the Tarantula Steam Train from Grapevine to the Stockyards. Lots of Texas flavored shopping when you get there.

No visit is complete without Texas Bar-B-Q and if you have not been to County Line on I30 and Bass Pro Rd. That's some serious eating. Be prepared for a wait though. Non-meal times are the best here.

Hey Texas Guy, of course you're invited. What a great idea! We can take the Citation VII and do a Texas tour. We have plenty of booze on the plane and then after that, Megan is buying the first round.

coleminer, did someone tinkle on your Cheerios this morning? If you don't like Megan, why are you reading her blog? I love Megan.

Megan, how about Nasher Sculpture Center in downtown Dallas? It's beautiful!

Hiya Mach80...

I would think FOX could pony up for the gas for a special assignment like that. Just need Megan, her invited guest from out of state, a camera crew and a FOX4 American Express card. It could be done on her days off (Citations are FAST...), and the segments shown during the week.

I would be happy to act as a tour guide. Maybe I could even go some places I have never been.

It would be a blast to see her friend's faces as they see just how big and diverse our beloved state is.

BTW... who do you think that coleminer (sp?) was calling a "snob"... moi???? Too Funny. I am as far from a snob as it gets.

The Rodeo in Mesquite is always a good place to take people from out of town, the Stockyards in Ft. Worth, the 6th Floor Museum, then there is old Southfork Ranch... I had friends in from England last year, they couldn't wait to see Southfork... evidently Dallas still runs in re-runs over there, if you go a little further east there is Forney which hosts tons of antiques, Toontown which is in Wills Point.. has exotic animals, there is the old train you can ride (unless they have closed it) in Rusk, BBQ is a must, especially for yankees as well as a good old fashioned Texas tornado (see Ron Jackson about this). Truly though, if you want them to get the real Texas experience... take them to some small town like Ben Wheeler Texas, stop at one of the 2 businesses (usually a gas station/cafe) and just sit and have some coffee and a slice of cake or pie and enjoy the beautiful landscape and the lovely people... who don't know a stranger and treat you like family.... that is afterall.. what we are known for... being friendly.

Baby Back Shaq's on Akard has some really good BBQ and of course Eddie Deans. The Ranchhouse downtown is only open for events but his BBQ restaurant is in Terrell, not far from there is a great Peach orchard where you can buy all sorts of peach products and there is a WWII aviation museum in Terrell as well. Terrell would be another smaller town to take someone to for the true Texas experience... there is a little restaurant there called The Yellow Rose has great home cooking in it and lots of conversation and charm.

Texas Guy, I think we can swing it. The Citation seats 8 people comfortably in comfy leather seats. So that would be Megan and her friend, you and the camera guy, and some equipment. Pack a light bag for contingencies and I think we are on our way. We just need Megan to do a little fenagling on her part and a little on my part. What do you say Megan? Are you up for a Citation ride?
