By now, you've probably seen/heard the Josh Howard video.  In it, the Mavs foward disrespects the national anthem.  He's with a group of friends at a charity flag football game.  The anthem is playing,  and Howard looks into a cell phone camera, using language to disparage the Star Spangled Banner.

Don't get me wrong,  I'm true blue when it comes to the anthem. I've stood and respected the flag before hundreds of ballgames.  To my knowledge, Howard has done the same.  He should not have made the comments.  They're sickening.

But you know what?  I've done and said stupid things when I think it's "just among friends."    I'm glad that a number of our sports department conversations haven't been captured by cellphone video/audio.

I know I'm going to come off as defending Howard here,  but is it  POSSIBLE that this guy was just being goofy..showing off for his buddies?   It's stupid of him to make those comments.  Especially if there's any chance of them being captured on video.  Video that will later be spread across the nation.

I realize Howard's had a very spotty track record over the past  few months.  He's made one bad decision after another.  The Mavericks haven't been able to handle him.  His game and his franchise's public image have suffered.

Maybe Josh Howard doesn't love America as much as you and I.   But I'm not willing to make that judgement based on one piece of off-the-cuff cell phone video.  I don't know how patriotic he is.

But I do know this.  Howard's in for more grief than he can possibly imagine.  The punishment will far outweigh the crime.

You're right of course, but the fact of the matter is that this fool is a professional sports figure. He makes oodles of cash for doing something he loves, and kids look up to him. Just like celebrities, law enforcement, members of the military, politicians, and other sports stars, he is subject to additional scrutiny because of the position he's in. He needs to be very cognizant of it 24 hours a day. Lord knows he's paid well enough to compensate for it. If he doesn't like it, then maybe he should look into a different profession...maybe as an usher at Rev. Wright's church, or security for the Black Panthers.

Mike, this is an email that I sent Mark after I heard about Josh. Mark, I have been a huge Mavs fan since you purchased the team. I think you have taken a horrible team and made it respectable. I want you to know that as of today I can't support the team any longer until you get rid -of that racist, un-American Josh Howard. As a former Marine, I would fight till the death to defend the free speech that Josh enjoys. But as a former Marine, I cant put any support behind a team who has someone who can be as disrespectful to our country, our national anthem, and someone who justifies his ignorance based on his skin color. I was not aware that black people were not patriotic as Josh insinuates in his coments. I have some Marine brothers who are black and I can assure you that they would bitch slap Josh for making such ignorant comments. I will be sending this message to every veteran I know and every person I know who cares enough about our country not to disrespect the flag and the national anthem. Shame on Josh and shame on you if you don't react to this with more then just a "talking to". I understand that you had a conversation with him and I appreciate that, but this act is unexceptable and unforgiveable. If Josh stays on your team I will assure you that you lost at least one fan.

Speaking of which, what the hell does being black have to do with it? Do they not "celebrate" the Star Spangled Banner? Try becoming a professional basketball player/thug in Africa and see what happens...what a fool...

It amaze me how quick we can judge someone on what comes out of their mouths. Whatever happens to freedom of speech no matter how ignorant it may or may not be he lawfully has that right to say what the HELL he feels, him, Don Imus , Al Sharpton all these dirty mouths rappers and comedians we don't say nothing when it comes out of our own mouth. Speaking as a black woman we need to sweep the dirt off our own porch first before we start cleaning others house. Leave these stars along and tell some real news Fox4 is turning into TMZ!!!

If Mark Cuban allows j. howard to continue with this team, they've lost my support also. That may be the only thing they understand,,,,.....

Howard will have some sort of an apology (prepared for him by his manager/lawyer) that goes something like this, "I first want to apologize for my remarks regarding the anthem. I was joking with friends and did not realize my remarks would be aired. I love this country and the opportunities given to me and again, I apologize to anyone I may have offended."

Standard cut and paste apology to "those I may have offended" rather than i'm sorry for ever saying it.

What's messed up is this young man has been given opportunities and made millions of dollars that he would not have were he born in another country. A respect for the flag and anthem is not too much to ask. But, as shown by his past actions, he'll continue being Josh Howard until one day he'll realize what an idiot he's been.

Cuban lost any support I had when he made that movie.Until he publicly apologizes for that, this with Howard will have to wait.Dallas has no basketball team until then.

Mike,
He intorduced race as the reason that he doesnt like the Anthem

That was no joke, no accident

not even a quick response on how it was a joke
even if it was said as a joke,
Well then you and the rest of the MSM would be guilty ( yet once again) of a double standard where a person with dark skin can say things and not face the non stop rath of the media and that not be the case of someone with light skin.

ITS AS CLEAR TO SEE AS BLACK AND WHITE

josh howard and mark cuban are in the same boat.

The dallas mavericks would be better off without either one of these knuckleheads.

cuban throws a fit just like a little baby when he does not get his way.

josh howard needs to go live in a radicle muslem or communist country. His act of disgracing the National Anthem slaps all the Service Men and Women who have given their lives for this country or have served or are serving this great country.

There are good people in the dallas maverick organization other than the cuban and josh howard so to them I apologize when I say I AM NO LONGER A dallas maverick FAN!

mark cuban and josh howard can kiss me between my back pants pockets!

Howard keeps digging himself into a bigger hole. He said something stupid. I hope to someday have the incredible gift that so many in my industry(and apparently many of you share it)..the gift of instant judgement. What an amazing talent.
And if me trying to just introduce the possibility of there being more than one side to the story..if that makes me a "bootlicker," so be it. The easiest thing in the world for any broadcaster to do right now..is to pile on. Thought I'd try something a little more balanced. That'll show me.

If you believe it then say it. cool

the gift of instant judgement, what about Howards 'gift" of instant extemporanus thought.

Mike you might be jaded/influeneced because of the conflict of interest that is presented to you by a Josh Howard.

YOu have to face this guy and Cuban so any negative judgement on your part towards him could cause an issue with access.

Mike, why not try and interview Mark Cuban and see what he has to say about this? That is if he'll comment on it. If I were him,I'd be so damn embarrassed that I'd hide and try and find a way of silently trading Josh "UnAmerican" Howard. I'm sure by now he's been inundated with emails from all over the country over this video. I'd sure love to have Cuban's email address so I could email him and tell him he's lost my support as well.

It is becoming increasingly more important to stand behind our nation as we are becoming more alone in the world. I am disappointed that anyone who calls America home would disrespect our flag or anthem. Howard is just another person without respect for our nation.

Would any of you say what he said even if you thought no one else would know you said it? I doubt any of us would.

This guy is an idiot. He has also bragged about his drug use and was arrested for doing 94 mph in a 55 zone. He thinks the rules do not apply to him. Just another overpriced, overblown sports player who thinks the world owes him

I don't know why I care, I quit watching the Mavs when Cuban made that movie. Howard fits into the stereotype of ingrate thug atheletes. You're in the public spotlight, deal with it. You make millions. If you don't want the spotlight, stop taking the millions they pay you and go get a job elsewhere. There are enough athletes that gladly use the spotlight to do good - Josh Hamilton, Roy Williams, etc.

And what would happen, Mike, if you said something to the effect of you wouldn't sing the national anthem because there were black people around, go [insert white politician] '08? You'd be fired instantly. There's a double standard out there.
