State of the Union from a VETS prospective...

President Bush gave his final State of the Union address of his presidency.  This time next year we will have elected a new president and a new chapter in American history will begin.  That is then, but for now, the President refuses to go “gently into that good night.”  He laid out new initiatives for 2008 (while at the same time beginning his LAME DUCK status).  The time period is plagued by the ongoing war in Iraq, a slumping economy on the verge of a recession, and foreclosure rates at an all time high around the country.  Not the ideal final year for any president to have especially when introducing  new, bold programs and initiatives.

Among one of the most prominent and personal initiatives (I am a veteran of the Armed Forces) was the new reformed education benefits for veterans and their families.  Under the current regulations, if a veteran does not use the educational benefits within 10 years of active service, the benefits expire.  The new program would allow a veteran to hand them over to a spouse or child that wished to continue their education.  This came with applause from both sides of the political aisle as well as from my living room.

Another piece of legislation that will be dramatically reduced in power on February 1st is the Patriot Act (terrorist surveillance monitoring program).  I will not go into my view on this issue, but to say, I am glad the restrictions are changing soon.  Freedom does come at a cost, believe me, I paid my dues with four years of active duty in military hot spots all over the world.   Unfortunately, those costs should not come at the expense of violating our personal and private rights.  There is no place in our government for a BIG BROTHER watching over our shoulders.  The framers of this great nation shook of the chains tyranny over 200 years ago, lets not give any one the power shackle us again!

As for the rest of the speech it was the usual laundry list of hopes for his final year in office.  The President is sitting at about 34% approval rating.  President Clinton left office with 60% approval rating, mostly because of the unprecedented years of prosperity in the country at the time.  We are definitely not living in those days anymore, but America, don’t loose HOPE, we will see those days again.  As we near closer to our Super Tuesday and beyond to next November’s election night; we need to decide what kind of country we want this to be.  I hope that you will all search your hearts, minds and souls to find the candidate that best understands your dreams as well as your fears.  I hope you will find the leader that best embraces your ambitions and the hopes for your family.  When you exercise the greatest gift of democracy by casting your vote it will not be based on pressure from others, or biased media or even on who looks presidential, but on an educated decision.  Until next time America….YOU KNOW THE DEAL, KEEP IT REAL!!!!

Clinton was repsponsible for the first recession in History since the 1929 Black Monday....You are off your rocker!!!! The only "prosperity" and well to do that was going on was and increase in status quo, welfare recipients witout limits, and "Clintonst Military" Im suprised the first bullet didnt go into "sugars head" instead of the seargents...You need to put the crack pipe and "ink magazine" and your 40oz down and walk away slow and get into rehab if you think for even half a second that this country did well under the Clinton Crime family, or will do better under a Dem. et al

I cannot with good conscience vote for Obama or Billary. Since Fred dropped out, I am leaning towards Romney.

We are all entitled to our own opinion there "Big Pants" and that is what this forum is about, hearing ideas and sharing our opinions. While you have a few points keep in mind the Bush family makes money from the oil industry and Cheney has made his fair share of money off the soldiers fighting in Iraq. I come from a military family we all have served this country with distinction; two of my brothers are still fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. So I think I have earned my right to share my opinion!

Scotty, I have to agree with you. I was a Thompson guy also but knew he really didnt have much of a chance. I cant hardly go with McCain. I have cursed that man so many times. I would never vote for one of the current dems.
So that leaves Romney. Not what I want, but we have to pick someone.

I don't know where some makes their money is important, as long as it's legal, right? And Mr. Cheney isn't associated with Haliburton any longer (a great company, btw).
I don't think Clinton did one positive thing in office... the R Congress wouldn't let him do a lot of tax raising he wanted, etc. We were still feeling/enjoying the Reagan tax cuts in the '90's.

Dems don't offering anything new and haven't in decades, too incapable of accepting/realizing/acknowledging tax cuts WORK. The 'change' they speak of is to move the country to the left and more and more into socialism. Never good.

Yes, Thompson here too, but now Romney. NEVER McLame. eeewwwww

You all have good points, but keep in mind that the Tax cuts only benefit the extremely rich and the very poor. The tax cuts are carried on the backs of the middle and upper middle class. I am all for the tax cuts for the poor, they need it, but the rich are another story entirely. I know, I see how much it has effected my paycheck every month. I am not for raising taxes, but President Bush has given the wealthy in this country too much of a break. They can afford to hire Tax professional to find them loopholes, average Americans do not have that luxury.
One more thing, to say that Clinton has not done a single positive thing while he was in office is a gross overstatement.

Most of the really 'poor' (for this country.. we have none compare to the world) don't pay taxes anyway, which is wrong. All should pay taxes so all know how over taxed we are.

Sorry, but I disagree, too. Tax cuts, lower taxes - give ppl THEIR money to do with as they want/need. Spend, save, invest.. all help the country, create jobs. And it's our money, NOT governments, who waste the majority they collect.
Everyone benefits from lower taxes... sorry you don't see that. I believe it's a fact. Start raising taxes and the economy will slow down every time.

What did Clinton do? He left the economy alone to continue to grow...... that was good. He's a moral reprobate though who sullied the office and lied about it. That had a bad effect on the country.
oh well, we'll never agree... lol... but nice discussing with ya. :]

That is the beauty of our country and democracy that we have the right and freedom to have these discussions. You have written some great blogs in the past and we agree on more than you think, but thanks for taking the time to spar these issues a bit. It is always fun.

As for Bush's compassion, it quickly faded when it came to choosing between compassion for people or compassion for his buddies in the business world, didn't it? Tax breaks for oil companies drowning in excess profits is really compassionate, isn't it? And let's see if Bush really acts on his words to help the vets and their families. He can start with the cleaning up of the filthy rodent infested VA hospitals.

I am a Texan through and through, but I come from a family yankees (New York City to be exact). You can imagine being the first in my family to be born in Dallas, Texas. They all said I was adopted, not a true WEST, but you know what I take pride in being from Texas. Anyway, besides coming from a large family (6 siblings) and a family that converted from Irish Catholic to Southern Baptist, we are all military too (well at least the men our family are). Wow, the more I think about it, I should write a sit-com about my family. Look out FOX TV, I have your next hit right here!!!! I was a parartrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division where I served a broadcast journalist (yes those kind of ARMY jobs do exsist). After the military I returned home recieved my undergraduate from Hardin-Simmons University and attended film school at University of Texas (Austin). I now over-see our online sales division for Fox TV here in Dallas. Enjoy the Blogs!
