I don't watch college footbal. Even if the Cowboys are playing, I just want to know who is winning. But I have question about the pay for college football coachs.

It is being reported some guy from Hawaii may be coming to SMU to coach and could get $2M a year. Why are college coachs paid so much? It is just a game. What is he teaching these young men that will make them prosper in the future? A kid who is getting a law degree at least has a chance of earning a living as a lawyer, but there are so fewer kids who will become a pro football player and that career can only last so long.

Why so much money for a coach? I guess my question is: Why does coaching pay so much more than teaching?

Football programs bring tremendous amounts of cash to the colleges. Successful programs bring even larger sums, especially if they go to a bowl game at the end of the season. Thus, bringing in a successful coach increases the likelihood of team success. Is $2M/yr too much? Only if the coach is a failure...

That's about how much it would take for me to leave the beautiful state of Hawaii to come to Dallas. LOL

Why does coaching pay so much more than teaching? Because a college has only 1 head football coach, but dozens and dozens of professors and associate professors who teach.

College football is big business. Schools can make a lot of money off the game. A winning program will attract a lot of national publicity to the school. That helps in getting students to pick the school over others. It helps build some prestige as well. As much as college professors and college football coaches don't want to admit it, they both need each other.

Marks nailed it. The revenue from a bowl appearance will pay that salary. Millions of dollars come in from Boosters also.

It is because teaching while amirable does not pay the bills. Universities have paid much higher saleries to coaches Nick Saben was the coach of the LSU Tiger's a few years back and was recieving a cool 3 mil, since he has went pro and came back to college ball so imagine what he is making. While I will agree with you this is a little high for a new coach, this is not unheard of.....and it's sad but true football pay's the schools bills by televisied games, people in the stands and most of all people watching to see who the next big thing in the pros will be. I for one have grown to understand and like football mostly my fiance's doing. So there you have it
