Saw the news story about Irving Elementary schools teaching every other day in spanish. They teach the class in English on Monday and then on Tuesday they teach the class in all spanish. So instead of learning something everyday, the single language kids are only learning every other day? I am so happy with our school district, HEB, and SO glad we do NOT live in Irving. I feel sorry for english speaking children attending Irving schools. I understand there is a large percentage of spanish speaking children that need to attend school but I just don't think this is the right way to go about teaching class. The spanish speaking children should be in a separate class until they learn english well enough to attend the english speaking classes. Am I alone in this? I just don't think this system they are using is helping the spanish kids learn to speak english, this should be one of the main goals for their instruction; That way the spanish children can integrate better into society because they would be able to SPEAK OUR LANGUAGE. Call me crazy but I think that may be a better plan.

Guess the Irving kids will next have to learn Vietnameese, as they are taking over that town in high style. Belt Line Road is half owned by them now, and the are growing daily.
This is competely stupid ! No other country in the world does this, why should we ?

That's it. When I have kids, they'll be going to school every other day! Since they are American, they will only go to school when they are teaching Americans...stupid schools.

No wonder kids are graduating stupid and slow!

Shell, why don't you start a home tutoring school, you can work every other day and make millions. Remember - it was my idea, save some royalties for me ...HA HA HA HA

It's rather a proven fact now, that emmercing these kids in ENGLISH only is the fastest way for them to learn. If you want to live here, learn English.

I am telling you, the sovereinty of our nation is in serious danger. I am so glad that my kids are already grown. If I were still having to deal with schools as a parent, they would hate to see me coming. They have lost their minds!

i live around the corner from an elementary school.....the marquee out in front is always posted in spanish only.....my kid doesn't go there so it really doesn't concern me....but it kind of bothers me that english speaking people are being excluded....same thing is happening at my local bank....virtually every sign and all the promotional materials inside the bank are in spanish....i realize they are trying to accomodate the spanish speaking people....but why are they leaving the english speaking people out on the cold....????

One thing that drives me nuts is when I go into a predominantly Spanish run business and they carry on a conversation in front of the customer in another language. It's rude and it's poor customer service. Plus some of the things being said are out of line. I understand enough Spanish to know when I am being insulted. I don't go to the nearby Wendy's for just that reason. And there's a nail salon that was run by some ladies from the Middle East and they hardly ever talked to the clients, but carried on long animated conversations with each other. I don't go there either. Stop using businesses that don't use English to communicate. You can't be a doormat if you refuse to lie down.

Only in America... We openly invite people from all over the world to become American Citizens. These people speak different languages, with many different dialects, even we as Americans speak with different dialects. Yet we expect the whole world to speak English.

I find this an interesting concept, because what many *Americans* do not know is, many of the countries around the world teach english, and that many people in other countries have degrees in English. How many *Americans* born right here in the United States have a degree in English?

We need to learn to speak more languages as Americans. It might lead to fewer world issues. Imagine being able to sit down at the negotiating table, and NOT needing to rely on a translator (who might be bias), to tell you what the other party is saying.

Also like it or not, the spanish speaking population is the fastest growing segment in America. Keep this in mind at all times, while we may not understand them very well if at all, they understand much more english than they will admit to. So show them respect, and they will work with you the best they know how.

IF we dont learn to change with the times, we will soon become a third rate country. Personally as a 45yr old caucasion man, I want to see America remain the number one nation in the world.

Ironhorse...good post. America is not the world, and the world is not so afraid of change that it refuses to teach in another language...even if that language is not native.

Instead of becoming more worldly, we'd like our children to grow up speaking only English and assigning value only to things that are American. Sounds like the wrong path to me, and a lonely one too.

Sally

When I was 20 I felt the same way as many of these people, if you dont speak english then you need to go back to where you came from.

As I've gotten older, I realized how short sighted that kind of thinking is. Just as believing that being christian is the only true path to GOD.

America needs a new pair of glasses, with an updated prescription. Americans need to open their eyes and minds to all the world has to offer. Being focused, or having tunnel vision can only lead down the path to destruction.

My youngest son is living in Belgium with his Dutch speaking wife. He had to learn to speak Dutch, so he could get a job and work in that country. They did not learn his language in order for him to converse with them.
The reason the Spanish & Mexican people are populating so fast, is because they don't believe in birth control. If they hadn't bread like flies, they wouldn't keep wanting to come here and over-populate this country as well.
All the countries across the world, where birth control is not used, are starving to death, and Mexico is running here, just like the Africans are trying to get to other countries.
How many languages do we need to speak, in order to converse with all the different nationalities that are coming here ?

Government teaching is so retarded, they won't miss anything. The kids could go twice a week and keep up if they could get all the subjects in. They 5 days a week teach them how to take a stupid test instead of educating them. They test every few weeks to make sure they retard it enough for the slow kids to keep up and say "to hell with the ones that got it the first time".

You're right about this Graywolf, they only teach test. That's why on the new show "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader", people ARE NOT ! They can't answer first grade questions, let alone fifth grade.

I believe these other countries that teach English , teach it because English the worldwide language for banking and pilots etc. . Yes it does not hurt anyone to learn another language , but we should have a choice on what that language is. My grandparent;s spoke Danish but my father and his siblings were not allowed to speak it until they learned English , because they were Americans and proud to be .

Smart parents, Jlillian ! My son took a class on German, before he thought about moving to Europe. Hardly anyone speaks German where he lives, now he's having to learn Dutch. His wife speaks five different languages. Her mother and dad speak in two different languages. I guess that's how to make a marriage work, get a wife who doesn't know what your talking about ! (lol)
