Ok, what’s the deal with Michelle Wie? She’s recently recognized as no. 5 on Forbes the list of top-earning female athletes to the tune of $12 M annually.
She won’t be there long, I believe. Just last week, she was disqualified from the LPGA’s event. I haven’t seen her impact on the golf course.
Nike, which foots a large chunk of her endorsement purse, probably won’t hang on too much longer if her results don’t match the potential.
No. 5? Pardon me for being surprised. No. 1 on the women’s money list is former Wimbledon champ Maria Sharapova ($26 M).
Serena and Venus Williams are 2 and 3, with $16 M and $13 M.
Fourth is retired tennis champ Justine Henin, over $12 M.The 18-year-old Wie even outearned Annika Sorenstam, who has 72 LPGA wins including 10 majors.
Amazing that endorsement dollars don’t necessarily follow performance. Wie has made only 2 pro cuts in two years of trying and both of those were last year.
Her competition for Nike and other big money sports sponsors could be Ji Young Oh, who won last week in a play-off, rookie from China Shanshan Feng, and even emerging player Yani Tseng.
Lorena Ochoa could overtake Wie on the money list first because Ochoa made this year’s top ten.
The craziest thing of all: Wie will try to qualify for yet another men’s event- the Legends Reno-Tahoe next week. She’s not even up to the challenge of playing her own gender except in the money game.

Wie has always been overrated. I've never understood the hype about her. I've watched several of the matches that she's been in, and never seen her win.

Ochoa was the hottest player on the circuit last year (not doing much this year), and has a far better future than Wie.
Ochoa might have a shot at Sorenstam's record, but Wie will never get close to being that good !

I sense a modicum of jealousy here, right or wrong on my part.

Marketers go with whatever is hot (BA SHSU in Marketing here). Wie has the youth, the looks and the following, not to mention the potential.

That's a gamble many are willing to take. As you well know, winning in pro golf takes talent and luck.

Then there's the fact that sponsors get tired of sponsoring women that look like men, if you know what I mean.

That's why Anna Kournikova was so popular. She was good, had potential and was easy to look at.

Remember, sex always sells.

Hi Scotty-- You and I have blogged for some time now. I'm surprised that you raise the "j" word. Can a woman comment about an athlete who's not getting it done without being jealous?
If I said Harold Minor had not lived up to the "Baby Jesus" and the "next Jordan" labels was given, would that be a sign of jealousy?
Even when I was down on Danica, it was because she had not won.
Anna Kournikova, by the way, is one of my favorite athletes. Can I call her an athlete? (smile)
Steffi Graff might be my fav of all time. No need to list her successes and HER S-I SWIMSUIT ISSUE WAS FABULOUS !
Scotty, please consider putting the jealousy label on someone else.

Nita, like OJ's lawyers said, "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit." It's up to you. As a good devil's advocate, I proffered that to you with my caveat.

I do firmly believe people are jealous of her skills, intelligence, her good fortune and her obvious good looks.

Speaking of Danica, seems people are a little jealous of her, still. I laughed at how she was dissed the last race byy the rookie. She bowed up to that other female driver (from Spain was she?) and got checked!

Where I grew up, you don't get up in someone's grill without a squabble. Methinks she needs to back off and drive. What about you?

hey everyone -- guess those LPGA winners, Sorenstam included -- must also have "a modicum of jealousy" as I do to question Wie's decisions, too.

HaHa, I think they do! She is a looker.

Nita, was that for me? lol

It's all good; I still love ya!

Now take me in the pits with a Hot Pass at TMS and I'll rescind!
