Back when they first started putting in Red light cameras I thought that I sensed that the length of yellow lights was shorter than in the past.
I contacted my City Councilwoman Angela Hunt who contacted the people in charge of such things who assured me that in Dallas yellow lights conform to a national standard of one second for every ten  miles per hour speed limit on the street concerned.  I noted that this was often not sufficient time to clear an intersection since intersections come in different sizes which have no relation to the speed limit. I suggested that it would be a good idea to have countdown timers like those downtown on Commerce Street to let you know the time till red long before the light turns yellow on the intersections with cameras if the purpose was indeed to prevent accidents and not just a money maker. I also noted that it was unfair that other cities put up warning signs but I had not seen any in Dallas.

Recently I saw a camera had been installed at the intersection of Beacon and Lindsley. While this is a small intersection back in a neighborhood there was a fatal car hits pedestrian accident last year there so I saw the logic.  But what really pleased me was to see not only a "Warning Photo Enforced Red Light" sign, but  a big easily visible countdown timer from ten seconds counting down to let you know when the light turns red.

I do not know ,nor  care , whether this was the plan all along or if my input spurred action ; but I am pleased with the result and  hope to see more of these in the future.  If she is responsible for this improvement I say "kudos to Angela Hunt" for following through on another important civic issue.

Good blog. Good point mention. That is a good ideal about the counter device. I can see where that would really help.

I hate those quick red yelloow lights! The one at Montford and LBJ is 3.36 seconds long. The speed limit is 35 mph so that works out. But it is still too fast of a light.

Personally I believe it has nothing to do with diminishing red light violations but rather is a revenue boost to the respective city that utilizes it.

Today I noticed that they have installed a warning sign on Abrams at Mockingbird.
No countdown timer there yet; but hopefully they will continue to upgrade the intersections which are targeted with red light cameras to include both a warning sign and a count down to red timer.

In the meantime all you can do is either replan your itinerary to avoid such intersections, or use extreme caution when approaching them so that you can stop on a dime.

That light of which you speak is dangerous for pedistrians! There is absolutely no way to cross Abrams even running. Bad place if one is walking.

I totally agree! I've been saying that, too!

" noted that this was often not sufficient time to clear an intersection since intersections come in different sizes which have no relation to the speed limit."

I say: Change all green lights at dangerous intersections to a countdown timer. Instead of a light, as we know it; the green would be smooth rolling seconds remaining countdown.

If we knew we had, for instance: 1 second of green left and 1 second of yellow per speed limit mph. Many drivers might make better split second decisions. I believe it would cut down on accidents at intersections like those.

They need to GET WITH THE TIMES and give it a try! Numbers register different with most people and makes people more aware of the potential danger. Seconds count and we know it! The question is: How many seconds do I have left?

Their saying that they are going to add some more of those intersection cameras at the unknown disclose locations. I know that this will really some good.
