I love going back to school…Yeah, I was one of those kids that actually enjoyed being educated..most of the time at least! If I could be a full time student and work on a graduate degree, I’d be there in a second. Unfortunately, I have a daughter I am supporting through college and another on her heels! Maybe later in life. Any time I get the chance, I visit area schools to give presentations on the weather and my career. Just a few days ago I had the privilege of visiting Bret Harte Middle School in South Los Angeles. What a school and what a class! I spoke to hundreds of 6th graders. Ms. Margaret Starks, one of the talented 6h grade teachers at the middle school, hosted me. The students were smart, engaging and very polite. They put together a really cool banner to welcome me (see picture below) and presented me with a sweatshirt, school key chain and even an LAUS ID badge! Great stuff! I had a great afternoon with the kids talking about what I love most, the weather. I am so fortunate to do what I do and I think it’s very important for me to give back to the community in some way. It’s easy to get selfish and forget how fortunate we are sometimes. School visits like these keep me grounded. Happy summer students! I’m looking forward to next fall already..Rick

hey Rick!!

Looks like you had a lot of fun. Kids are truly incredible and make me realize the little things in life are the ones that matter. I think it's wonderful you go out and talk to kids about your passion. I'd love to have you come to my school but since my kids are 3 to 5 I'm not sure they would grasp all the concepts... They would be much more impressed with SkyFox. :)

So kudos for you and your work in the schools. :)

Erin

no shyt rick! "one of those kids that actually enjoyed being educated" man, today kids can stay home and watch cable TV and get educated. Science channel and Military channel, and History channel get my vote. i watch you and jillian and dorothy in the mornings because of the two women. i did marques a lot too! you, my man, are cool. i don't get into the surf or sand volleyball but i realize some of the market does! i really lose my focus when when any channel report talks about hip shyt on the sand. bore me with the beach! i want to know what is happening at the grove even though i live close to it and i never go there!

That is so nice of you Rick to give back to the community. It's so cool that you take time out of your busy schedule and give back to the kids. I'm sure they enjoyed your company and your knowledge and I am also sure that they learned a lot. You seem like you are a donw to earth guys and even though you are on tv, you don't let that phase you or change you in any way. Thanks Rick for all you do.

hmm taking a 2nd look at it. it seems like 2 of the lightning bolts struck the chopper. so what are they say? are they hoping you die in a accident where lightning strikes ya, and sends ya falling to your death????? does the black background represents death? do the clouds represents your soul going to heaven? hmm i'm scared for ya ricky

Samo,
That is a pretty dark way to see the banner that the kids made... I doubt that is what they were trying to convey. Most of the time I agree with you but not this time.

I too loved school. I've always liked learning new things. I think High School was the absolute perfect time for me, the awkwardness of middle school had left its mark and now I actually enjoyed the classes the teachers that actually talked to you and not down to you, and of course the socializing.
When my kids started school I volunteered for classrooms, field trips after school programs and in the library so they could keep it open.
I loved the kids.
Rick I commend you on giving your time to show up for the kids, and talk about what you do and maybe even spark some interests in the weather, or any of the many things you do every day. Bless You me Boyyo

Hey Rick...I visited a local school to do a presentation on healthy cooking etc. and all the kids kept calling me Rachael when they asked a question....I was finally like "Who do you kids think I am?" and they said "You are Rachael Ray!" Glad you had a better experience than me! ;)
