SAGiles-writing about life!

Well, now that I am writing this, I just put my brain in gear and I should have taken pictures before today.

Anyone out there having fun with web worms in the trees?  Well, for the first time in 15 years our two mulberry trees which are in the back yard have web worms.  And OH! what nasty bags they have spun on the limbs of our two trees.  The arborist have all told me it is because we had so much rain, cooler temperatures in June and July and now suddenly the hot dry weather.  And the fact they love the sweet taste of the leaves.  SO, today we had the wormy creatures sprayed before they could do anymore damage or find their way to other shrubbery or my trees in the front yard!

I am told by the arborists that this is a particularly bad year for this and the areas of Dallas are just coated in these wiggly, fuzzy creatures.  So, they have been sprayed at my house--in Plano.

I'm glad you brought this up! I was wondering what it was & what caused it. I noticed this weird webby thing in my neighbors tree. The limbs hang over my drive... couldn't miss it. Then, I was out back today & noticed the same thing in a tree two houses down.

Now that I know what it is, I can protect my trees & shrubs, too!

They really are nasty and eat away at the leaves and branches. Our trees are over twenty years old, and so I didn't want to take the chance of a disease starting to do them permanent damage. They crawl through the grass, and I don't know what kind of damage they can do to the grass, and we even found them crawling up an outside wall of the house. YUK! I hope my neighbors appreciate the fact we did our utmost to protect their trees. And since we live close to a very large and lovely city park--we helped to protect those trees as well!

As a kid we use to burn them out of my grandparent's trees. The webs are very flamable and the tree will not catch on fire. We would have a running water hose close by just in case. It would rid the trees of the little pests in practically just minutes. If any returned, we would just burn out the ones that came back. It saved the trees and we never burned anything down doing it. This old trick was carried down to us by a great uncle. Of course I can understand the objections that this would raise and the political incorrectness about it. It is probably better to use chemicals that will eventually wind up in our drinking water. That is a more accepted practice and more politically correct. Just sharing what I have seen work and work well it did.

I think the city of Plano would have a real problem with me setting fire to the tips of the trees, the trees are over 40 feet in height and several limbs hang out over the alley and one that had the most is very close to our garage roof. OH, the insurance company might not like us burning down our house for some web worms.

I am not sure that there was a great deal of chemical run off on this!
