SKevin's Rant

by SKevin from Lake Dallas

Last Post 39 days, 7 hours Ago

Not too long ago GM announced cutbacks and layoffs. I know why. It is because they spend so much money on their advertising. "Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States"...followed by the beating that is the GM President's Day car sale commercial. Its on about every 5 minutes or so on FOX 4 for sure and I would assume all other channels as well.

With all that advertising money being spent, one can't help but wonder how many hourly line worker salaries that advertising money being spent on TV spots would pay. President's Day was Monday. One would think the sale would end then, too. I am sure within a day or so will be the re-vamp commercial and the President's Day sale being extended along with the running of the commercial. Nice way to budget GM. I am sure your hourly workers really appreciate your efforts to take care of business as they decide what to do with their futures.

It's time for them to make changes in management.

Try working here... with FOX 4 on all day... I'll never listen to "Hail to the Chief" again without clenching my jaw.

My wife's father worked and retired from Ford. We both drive Fords and every 4 years we each buy another Ford. So Hillsborohillbilly, I'm doing what I can to "be an American". Hmm, Ijust saw a story just now that GM is laying off 900 more workers in a consolidation effort. I wonder if they are in the advertising department.

Advertising pays salaries at the TV stations, radio stations, car lots, etc.; it's part of the fabric of America, unless you want government to do it. The relative small cost of ads, can't compare to the huge cost of some employees... retirement, 401, etc. Unions are killing American companies, not a few ads.
Maybe you rather GM move completely overseas? Come on, give the big companies a break... they employee thousands of ppl, providing them with a good living!

Unions are killing American companies-BS
Poor management and CEOs ungodly bonuses are to blame.
I sure find it amusing that the American auto makers keep moving out of the US because they say they can't make money here. Meanwhile, Toyota keeps making more cars in the US and are making a killing.

Maybe if GM produced a product equal to or better than their foreign car counterparts the company would not post any loss. We own Chevrolet and Dodge vehicles but it is difficult to keep buying American when the foreign cars are built better and get better gas mileage. Hopefully GM will rebound and make it work.

I agree, cbfan. Someone has an ad out about some CEO's making more in 10 minutes than the average worker makes in a year.

But unions don't help. I was in two for about 10 years. They suck you dry for nothing of benefit or inportance.

Guess it depends on the union.
I'm generally satisfied with mine.

Advertising works.
Brand recognition is due to advertising.
People tend to go to what they are familiar with.
Advertising could be saving those peoples jobs.

Oldi, apparently it doesn't work; GM is getting its butt kicked. Poor management is to blame. Design and make a vehicle that the public wants.

I teach at a middle school in a suburb north of Dallas and I love it. I am married to a teacher as well. My wife is from New Orleans and we spend much of our time in New Orleans-the greatest city in the world and I am Dallas born and raised. We wish we could make a life there and we did try because we wanted to help with the recovery but it was just not possible. We see Dallas as our place to work and New Orleans as our place to live. It will come back. When I have free time I like to read, work on home improvement projects, cook, write, and sell/buy on Ebay.
