SKevin's Rant

by SKevin from Lake Dallas

Last Post 39 days, 6 hours Ago

Now that we have made it through this really neat snow storm, I have to ask drivers in Denton county a question. I drove in yesterday in the snow and I got out and drove to my middle school this morning. Those of you who flew past me in your oversized trucks and SUV's-did you make it to where you were going? Did you make it without hurting anyone or causing an accident?

I guess its a DFW (especially Dallas) thing and I am Dallas born and raised. I also was fortunate to have had a career at UPS in the early 90's where I got to go through their driver training program and learn all kinds of essential driving skills. Anyway, is it a Dallas thing to really think that your huge pickup or or luxury SUV is well suited to fly on ice/snow/slush covered roads? I live in Lake Dallas and one thing I hate about it is it is almost like battling the roads in Plano. I would have never thought that but here I am seeing it.

I hope you all made it where you needed to go in such a hurry and I hope you did so without hurting anyone. The point is simple-snow, rain, or sun just slow down. There is no reason for you to put your hurry in front of our safety on the road.

I totally agree! Some people don't have the sense of a rock.

I got around just fine in a crossover vehicle (a car that looks like a truck but is'nt). I did get run off the road by a soccer mom in a large red Ford Excursion with dark tinted window's. Yes, she was on the cell phone and in a panic on her way to probably pick up the kids early from wherever. She did'nt even look when her lane was inconveinently slowing down and then swerved into my lane into what would have been the side of my vehicle had I not instantly decided it better to go off the road and into a park. Only a front alignment (got lucky) needed. And yes, she kept going on in her personal rush without blinking an eye. I should have let her take out the side of my vehicle. At least she would have had to stop for a while which would have been satisfaction enough.

Other than that, the roads were okay aside from people just freezing up on them and not wanting to go anywhere.

Sounds like a rant from somebody driving some imported sardine can deathtrap... I drove home in my HUGE Dodge 2500 4x4 with All Terrain tires and didn't slide one bit. Well, I did putting across an icy bridge, but it wasn't while stopping or slowing down.. I was trying to go and didn't have any weight on the rear axle. So I popped into 4wd and problem solved. When I'm sliding or slipping around, I can really feel it.. I noticed tons of little turd import SUV drivers sliding all over the place..

You all noticed that too huh. It wasnt just suvs or trucks though. I had a car on my butt the whole way home an its like you have no idea what the roads are like all we see is snow who knows whats under them. Then as we turned she flew by me an I know this was wrong but I was kinda hopin she got stuck in a ditch ahead of me so I could be like now see what happens when youre being dumb.

Well W5, I am so impressed that you have a huge Dodge 2500 4x4-REALLY impressed. I drive a Ford SUV and I am pretty sure in there somewhere is a part that is not American-I am sure your little big Dodge does too. I am just really, really relieved that your little big Dodge got you home safe while watching all the other slide all over the place. Good for you for being so observant and attentive of your surroundings in the ice.

he didn't state the year, but his Dodge is probably German, not US.

Remember, most of the people around here aren't from here. They are from places that actually know how to take care of the roads under these conditions. It isn't just big trucks and SUVs, they drive all kinds of vehicles.

I teach at a middle school in a suburb north of Dallas and I love it. I am married to a teacher as well. My wife is from New Orleans and we spend much of our time in New Orleans-the greatest city in the world and I am Dallas born and raised. We wish we could make a life there and we did try because we wanted to help with the recovery but it was just not possible. We see Dallas as our place to work and New Orleans as our place to live. It will come back. When I have free time I like to read, work on home improvement projects, cook, write, and sell/buy on Ebay.
