SKevin's Rant

by SKevin from Lake Dallas

Last Post 39 days, 6 hours Ago

I was curious. I have been following the stories on the truckers having a three day "strike". I can't blame them at all. They are out there trying to make ends meet and gas prices are just killing their business. Good for them for taking a stand. I just don't know if it will do much in terms of getting the attention of Congress or the oil companies. It will get the attention of the media and maybe we will have a day or three of lighter traffic on the highways. We will pay for it when we hit the stores though.

I know many gripe about government involvement in business. Free enterprise is the American way after all. The government does regulate utilities, though. Why is gas/oil not regulated as a utility? Why are the oil companies allowed to make record profits when the US economy is so unstable? Something needs to be done and I, for one, would love to see Congress step in and regulate prices on gas. I know the catch is we are totally dependent on oil because as a nation we love our cars. That is quite a weakness, though, and one that is tearing this country up from within. The ripple effects from high gas prices will affect us for years to come unless something is done.

Very true, SK - we have to feel bad for the truckers now, and us later !

The cost of survival rises daily, and there's no end in site !

Everyone in this country travels by personal vehicle, and countries that have mass transit pay twofold for their fuel. It's an out of control mess !

I heard these exact words said in the 70's,80's,and 90's.Truckers will survive by the same way they have in the past, increase their hauling rates.Of course this means higher store prices, and the circle just keeps going and going. However I really don't know what the congress can do about it.Carter tried and look at the mess he created.

President Bush and congress don't want fuel prices to go down they are all oil people getting richer off of it.....

The reason nothing is being done about the oil companies and the price of gas is that 99% of the congressman and sentors are the ones getting rich and spending more money everyday that comes from the common man.

If each one of us would follow along with the truckers and don't buy gas for 3 days or so, you can bet your butt the oil companies would get the point and prices at the pump would change. The American way of life is if you don't like something, protest it and take a stand.

I DOUBT THAT WOULD WORK. WE COULD HOLD FROM BUYING GAS FOR A YEAR AND IT WOULDN'T PUT A DENT IN THEIR POCKETS. THESE GUYS ARE ALREADY SO FILTHY RICH THEY COULD HOLD THEIR BREATHS LONGER THAN WE COULD.

EVENTUALLY WE WOULD NEED TO BUY GAS. THEY KNOW IT. WE GOTTA GET AROUND TO MAKE ENDS MEET. THESE GUYS HAVE BILLIONS IN THEIR BANKS TO GET THEM THROUGH ANYTHING, EVEN A YEAR LONG STRIKE.

THIS SUCKS BAD!!!!!!!

While I don't agree that not buying gas for 3 days would do any good, what might do good is for everyone to boycott a single oil company giant for a month or a full quarter (3 months). Then they might listen.

Personally I am taking the approach of just limiting my driving as much as possible. It sucks I have to do that, but I don't want to give them any more money then I have to.

This common girl can't afford to go anywhere now. My once $20 tank of gas is costing me $50 every 5 days! I'm going broke trying to keep gas in the car to go to work!

If I could share a ride I would.

Me and my wife owned some trucks back in the 90's, and take my word if they talk strike, some will but there is always sombody sitting there to take a load you go on strike for....I travel now about 300 miles a night but I drive atoyota tundra and trailer now...but still spending 350 to 400 a week in fuel...but not from exxon/mobile.....

Awesome discussion. I appreciate all the replies. Now, how unrealistic is it to think that there is a possibility that one of our presidential candidates can and will propose a remedy for this AND see it through?

SK, probably none. And, even if we boycott buying gasoline, we're not hurting the oil companies, we're hurting the independent person who leases that station from the big corporations.

The premise sounds good, but impractical. Me, looks like my new little SUV's gonna sit in the drive a while, while I start taking the bus, again. Argh!

I don't know about truckers, but the prices must not be too much for some folks. I went to the Target at Marsh and Belt Line the other day and a woman was sitting in her silver Jetta, motor running, talking on the cell phone when I went in, and 45 minutes later, she was still there-motor running, on the phone. What will it take folks? Now that's the kind of rampant waste of fuel that bugs me.

Some people have it. Some do not. There doing that cause they wish to flaunt it as you say. As long that society in on the course that it has choosen to go there will be a continue rise in fuel prices. It will a time that everyone will feel the pinch in their pocket not matter how much well endowel they seem to think they are

I teach at a middle school in a suburb north of Dallas and I love it. I am married to a teacher as well. My wife is from New Orleans and we spend much of our time in New Orleans-the greatest city in the world and I am Dallas born and raised. We wish we could make a life there and we did try because we wanted to help with the recovery but it was just not possible. We see Dallas as our place to work and New Orleans as our place to live. It will come back. When I have free time I like to read, work on home improvement projects, cook, write, and sell/buy on Ebay.
