I have been concerned lately with general news coverage in both printed media and on television. It often appears as if news producers and editors believe that most viewers and readers would rather be entertained than informed. This is a trend that has been increasing in popularity with each passing day. Admittedly, I do like to be entertained as well, but not at the expense of getting the “real” news. There are many such examples that I could point to, from murder and rape, to war and peace, many of which have been discussed in various posts right here on the myfox blogs. The one that has really intrigued me of late, however, is the water shortage in Atlanta. I’m wondering why I have to search to find up-to-date information on this potentially deadly crisis. This would seem to have all the trappings of a monster story. We have a population of 3 million on the brink of disaster with less than a ninety day supply of drinking water, governors of neighboring states at each other’s throats, poor civic planning by politicians and government officials, and a drought in the southeast that is described as epic! Governor Purdue is even threatening to sue the Army Corps of engineers! Why is the news media providing us with only minimal coverage on this huge story?

I must admit, I haven't watched the news or read the paper for the last couple of days, so I didn't even know this was happening. You're absolutely right, Daniel, the media should be following this story alot closer than they have been, and filling us in with every little detail. I always thought that the news should just cover "real" news as you put it. Anything under the entertainment category should be forwarded to those entertainment shows such as TMZ or Entertainment Tonight. I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of things going on around the world that we should be aware about, but aren't, because the media thinks that Paul McCartney's love life is far more entertaining. Thank you for posting this blog, Daniel.

Daniel and Candice, you both do my heart good. I was not aware of this happening. Much more important to me than celebrity drug tests .. reported over and over and over and over for days.

Thanks, Aili

Thanks for the comments, Candice and Angel. I still can't believe this is not a headline story!

Daniel,
When I was 12, I read The Ugly American. The awareness I learned was about the 12th page from the end. "and the sat on their heels, with their hands out for help". Daniel, I WILL NEVER SIT ON MY HEELS - NO GRASS GROWS UNDER MY FEET. I WILL ALWAYS TRY TO HELP MYSELF BEFORE ASKING FOR HELP.

Daniel, that was 49 year ago, nearly half a century - one of my first mottoes...

You lit a light, Candice and I just lit our candles from yours.... Thank you and a big hug and kiss to you this morning, Aili

This story is all over Texas. What we have been told by the media is that there is no mandatory water restrictions in place. One home is using 475,000 gallons of water each month and since there is no cap as to how much water he can use, there is no fine.

They have finally cut off the extra supply of water that is filtered down to Florida, but without rain, all states South of Georgia and fed from the water at Lake Altoona will be in trouble.

We are used to droughts here in the South. Texas mandates water restrictions where we can only water the outside on certain days and at certain times only. What is happening in Georgia is worse that the huge drought we just got out of this past summer. We got an abundance of rain in a short time and ended up with to much...though noone was complaining too much!

Pray for rain everybody.

Nice picture Daniel, your right, the drought is still on and no coverage. I guess Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan are way to important, maybe 3 million people just don't rate!

Thanks again, Ladies and James. Shells, thanks for coming all the way from Texas to sound off.
