Wow! Here it is, July 8, 2008, the summer is in full force and the year is halfway gone. It’s been a very busy year and I haven’t had much time to blog lately, but I have noticed a long-term trend in blogging that has fascinated me for the last few years.

What is it about blogging that seems to make people think that they can say anything they like with no shame? I’ve noticed people lashing out in anger, delivering personal attack after personal attack and generally speaking in a manner that is considered unacceptable in all other social situations. I see this in blogs all over the internet, including the myfox blogs.

There are a lot of theories to explain this trend. Some say that it’s the anonymity of the internet that allows people to lash out and that certainly makes sense in a lot of situations. Some folks seem to think that it’s okay to insult and degrade others as long as nobody knows them and nobody can easily track them down. It’s never really okay to be vicious, mean and insulting, but many people feel differently. Of course, some of these folks have come to regret their behavior as they have found that they can, indeed, be tracked down by law enforcement when needed.

Some people think that it’s the public figure aspect of blogging that makes people abandon acceptable behavior. In the early days of personal computers we had local Bulletin Board Systems that a relatively small number of people would use to discuss various topics and exchange opinions. Since there were not that many people who could read one person’s comments, things generally did not get too crazy. Skip ahead to today and one blogger can be read by hundreds or thousands of people daily and you have a nice anger stew. One comment today can start a war of words on what is now called the “blogosphere.”

Another theory is that there are those people who may have been frequently ignored or belittled growing up. As they grew older, they looked for areas that they might have better control over and might garner more respect and attention from. As they discovered the internet and blogging they seized the opportunity to make a name for themselves and take no prisoners. Again, these are all just theories that try and explain the negativity and the attacks that are so prevalent on the internet today. Every individual is important and has value. Everybody has their own story and that’s part of what makes blogging so much fun.

None of us are perfect and we can all be guilty of the occasional misspeak, but we should always be aware that words really can hurt people in ways that are not always easily definable. For the same reason a well written song is powerful, or a simple “Thank you,” or “I love you.” can change a person’s life, an attack aimed squarely at a person’s individuality or belief can have a huge negative impact. Many of us are pretty tough (or at least we think we are) because we’ve been burned before and we’ve heard most of the BS before, but some people are a little more tender. Sadly, some people have even killed themselves because of words somebody else used against them. It is true that actions speak louder than words, but when we blog, our actions are our words. Be well and have a great summer!

Daniel

WOW Daniel! Once again a GREAT shot! I'd love to paint this for my Christmas card. Love your work. As for your blog....people are people and if this is the ony way they can comunicate, I find it sad but okay, as long as they don't hurt anyone. I make my living with humor, the hardest thing is to not offend the innocent. But some people do take it wrong and feel they can say anything about anyone whether it hurts someone or not. That's NEVER GOOD.

Dan,

I always thought that cyber-bullies are cowards that are bullied themselves in their personal life by their boss, spouse, peers, etc., and they found that they can release the stress in a not-so-confrontational way----like a true coward would----by hiding behind an iconic image.

Also,

I can't believe you mentioned BBS's.......wow, now thats a blast from the past; I ran a Fido-net BBS from my house in the 80's, with 400 users, LOL. How cool was that? Oh and cyber-bullies were big back then two.

Bob...

Before the internet was born, there were "Bulletin Board Systems" that was very similar to the internet. You were able to send emails and chat with people, and play online games. Fidonet picked up our email package (emails from 400 users) two-times a day, therefore emails were not sent real-time. Fidonet picked them up over our modem, and distributed them.
The funny thing about running a BBS is that you are like God.......you see what everyone is doing and read everything they write, and you know who is scammin who by their IP address.
It was very very interesting. Then came the internet, and took over the BBS's.

Thanks for the comments guys. Bob, sure, go ahead and keep pulling my leg, but be warned, I have a trick leg that kicks unexpectedly! BBS stands for Bulletin Board System. Yes, Jane, those were the good ole days and I remember Fido-net well. Fido Net was (and still is- though smaller since many BBS's have shut down) a non-commercial network that linked BBS's all over the world. Back in the mid eighties when I was mostly stationed in Germany, I used to use the Fido net software all the time. I was an early adopter and very active in the early online world. Ah, yes, good old net mail, echo mail and the old reliable POTS system. I used to transfer messages back to the States for my Army buddies. The thing about the cyber bullies back then is that they came up with creative insults which I could appreciate and laugh at. Those were good times.

My first computer in the 80's had a cassette player to load programs. There was no such thing as a hard drive, or a modem yet. It would take literally 30-minutes to load a game of Frogger into memory.
Then when floppy drives and modems were invented they were external add-ons.

From 1988 to 1998 I owned a computer consulting firm with my ex, who was a programmer. I also designed software programs and he programmed them. We had 6 programs on the market, from business management software to a wedding planner----which was our best seller. Then when Windows came out, I decided not to rewrite the software to be Windows-compatible.....it was time to go a different direction, plus I had already divorced my programmer so it would have been too expensive to hire a programmer. It was interesting though.

Gee, Jane, you could have always grabbed yourself another programmer! ha! I remember the cassette drives well. I used to type in lines of code for hours to run a simple program. In highschool I ran two computer labs. One was a Radio Shack lab where I showed fellow students how to program in Basic and the other was an Apple II lab that I set up in the school library. I believe I created one of the first electronic library indexes in the New York Public School system. Now I manage the library technology for a law firm among my many other duties. Go figure. What a difference a day makes!

Thats great; I guess you found your calling early.
One of the programs I designed was a library or catalog of everything you own in your household, and it kept track of warranty information.
Smart-N-Easy was my Trademark. There was Smart-N-Easy Home Inventory, Smart-N-Easy Party Planner, Smart-N-Easy Wedding Planner, and Smart-N-Easy Baby Planner, and I had so many requests for a bar mitzvah planner, that I just took the wedding planner, and changed the honeymoon planner section to a speech writer, and just converted it into a new program.
My national orders were off the charts to our surprise, so I asked him to create an order-tracking program, and it was done so well that we put that program on the market too "Smart-N-Easy Office Pro". Yes, we had the "Office Pro" before microsoft. Our office pro was used by Paolo Gucci, Chase Bank, and the post office in VA, also Southland corporation used it too, but mostly small to mid size businesses loved it.

Don't hate me because I'm a LATE BLOOMER! I am so impressed with your techno-knowledge and experience. I really am, It would've made my writing so much easier and more managable if I had made friends with the computer sooner.
So you're both BIG DEALS...but can you DRUM?!?!
In the future, I intend to kiss-up to you BIG TIME!!

Nah, techno-knowledge is useful today, then obsolete next week.
That's why I got out of the computer consulting biz......I didnt want to spend half my life going to school. Whenever the giants say so, it's time to forget everything you learned, and learn from scratch again.......not a bad thing if you are an end-user appreciating the advanced technology though.

Bottom lin eis, I don't know how I did it before I learned how to use the computer, esp since I'm a notorious multi tasker!
Anyway..WANNA JAM? I can play it all. Jazz. Rock, Blues, Ehtnic....You name it, I got it covered. Can't play guitar though!

I haven't played in so long I forgot every chord, LOL. I would have to go back to the beginners class again. I used to play a lot of Fleetwood Mac songs. I went to their concert a couple of years ago, and Lindsay Buckingham can really jam! He was amazing! I was disappointed that Christine McVie was not with them anymore, but Lindsay made up for her void.

"when we blog, our actions are our words"...??????
I'm afraid blogtopia does not exist in the "blogosphere".
Confusion often comes when individuals change the "rules" in midstream, or simply fail to understand the fundamentals, of what the rules really are. This could not be a more perfect example.
By any definition you choose to employ, words are only words, & protected by the Constitution(with several exceptions of course, none of which appears applicable, per your post).
It's really quite simple....
When we blog, our "action" is typing.
A blogger's words, are a blogger's thoughts.
If a blogger is "offended" or "feels attacked", by contrary thought or opinion(words), well that's the risk one takes in putting their ideas open to comment(a setting can be activated to close comment, if one is so sensitive). One can also choose to stay off the blogs.

Ya know Doc, I was just thinking about that this morning on MY trip through the "blogosphere". I, in particular, am always confused until I put it on the computer and share that confusion with others. If anyone is offended by what I write, I tell them I'm sorry, I was confused at the time. Out of respect to my fellow bloggers I always shower, dress in coordinated fashion. I LOOK GREAT! (You'll have to take my word for it!)
Now I know you're gonna get all over me. Give me a chance to run and hide!

You paint me with the colors I abhor, your brushstrokes shade my immediate smile, mixed tones of gray and blue marking each mile that you alone can say you’ve traveled more. But, I am no canvas, no sketch-book page where inspiration’s masterpiece lingers like desire in your elegant fingers enfolding me, or starting to enrage the gentle burning I must now accept as wisdom will embrace a needed pain. Like rhythms dancing in my crowded brain; I can't erase the moments I have kept. Mark me with your grandiloquent design, showing me how you will always render reflected images you’ve surrendered to the passion of matter over mind, cajole me with the breadth of your reach, convince me with the melody of lust; play me with the harmony of mistrust and wonder not of promises or me!
