Don't look for a logical explanation to this tragedy.  There won't be one.  Yet we will all try to make some "sense" of the actions of a deranged man.

In the coming days and weeks, there will be the inevitable "angles" that we look for in the news business: "can it happen here?" and "what do you say to your kids?"

In a way that's our coping mechanism. It's our job as journalists to explain complex situations to you. This one defies explanation.

And I have no doubt there will be angry accusations that the university could have done more to protect the students.  That's true, without a doubt.  But the school would have to create a police-state to do that.

Inevitably, there will be lawsuits against the school, the gun-maker and anyone in sight with the deep financial pockets to make it worth the time of the lawyers.  Again, for the families, it's an effort to find someone to blame and to somehow make sense of it all.

Our own daughter called from college today where she and her friends were watching coverage of the story on the news.  There were few facts but much speculation.

She wanted something to help her understand it.  I could give her little, execept to tell her that it could have happened anywhere: a courthouse, an office building, a factory or on a public bus. I'm afraid that was not much comfort to either of us.

At her school, the dorms were all "locked down."  That means, in theory, that if you don't live in the dorm or are not a guest of someone who does, you cannot get inside. We all know that won't last long.

Like so many things we will hear and read and say over the coming days, it's a way for us to try to gain control of a situation that seems out of our control.

Tim, i am concerned about a string of copycat tragedies that may follow...not only at schools but anywhere a large group of people are gathered...it almost always seems to happen these days....all it takes is a person on the edge to see & hear this over & over day after day for them to say to themselves screw it..i am going down with a bang...i wish the media would limit coverage to actual facts only...i was watching Greta van Susteran until she started to have guests(like Geraldo) on speculating to what might have happened...so i turned off the TV...all of this coverage & speculation of a horrible tragedy only adds fuel to the fire as far as i am concerned...wht isn't a National Government Spokesperson cutting into live TV about every 30 minutes informing citizens in all walks of life, all over the country to be on guard for any suspicious unusual activities...or Local Authorities informing everyone to be on guard & not to fear calling 911 of anything or anyone that is out of the norm to a given situation

One thing I don't understand that I heard on the radio....

The campus security chose not to notify the rest of the school about the two that were shot in the dorm 2 hours before the massacre.

Of course, in hindsight, the school should have been on lock-down the minute those two were found. BUT - is that just the perfect vision of hindsight, or is that / should that be the standard?

When your home is broken into, the first thing police ask you is if the intruder is still in the home. If you don't know - then they come immediately and search the house. I would think the same procedure would be standard at a college campus.

But - I refuse to play into the "woulda, coulda, shoulda" mess. I am sure, at the time, they had justified their decision in some way.

And - I think it is the survivors that are in that decision making, administrative positions that will have the hardest time coming to grips with everything. Sure, others can get closure or "place blame" with lawsuits, petitions, etc. The campus security, administration, etc. - that will weigh so heavily on their hearts with no outlet. My prayers go out to them as well.
