Governor Rick Perry says Texans who hold concealed handgun permits should be allowed to bring them virtually everywhere.

The current law prohibits carrying weapons, even with a permit, in certain places like schools, sporting events, hospitals, churches, bars, polling places and courthouses.

The governor's reasoning:

  • The bad guys don't pay attention to the law and will bring their weapons anywhere anytime.
  • Texas who do have a permit have undergone extensive criminal background checks and must pass a firearms proficiency test.
  • Good people who are armed might be able to stop a bad guy, or at least hold him off until the police arrive.

Mr. Perry is quoted in the Dallas Morning News as saying, "A person ought to be able to carry their weapon with them anywhere in the state if they are licensed and they have gone through the training. The idea that you're going to exempt them from a particular place is nonsense."

After the original concealed carry law passed in Texas years ago, one of the sponsors of the legislation gave me some interesting background on the places where guns are prohibited.  The CEO of a well-known Fort Worth hospital lobbied against the right for Texans to carry weapons into hospitals unless they get written permission from the hospital administrator.  He wanted his wife to be able to carry a gun when she volunteered at the hospital, but did not want anyone else to have that same privilege.

Predictably, people in favor of more gun control are outraged.  They say the current law would also not stop someone with a history of mental illness, like the Virgina Tech killer, from buying a gun in Texas.

I think this is a good idea. Any business not wanting legally permitted guns just needs to post a sign stating so, and then, if they see a gun, they may ask the client to leave.
No harm, no foul.

Sounds good to me.

It's my understanding that any business can prohibit concealed handguns if they post the signs and make it their policy.

I think some people are confused about this. They think that a place that forbids guns is a "Safe Zone." But, actually, it is a "Kill Zone." It means that a killer can walk in and kill everybody there and nobody can defend himself because guns are not allowed in there. The "Guns Not Allowed" policy only restricts the honest law-abiding citizens from carrying their guns with them to protect themselves. It will do nothing to stop criminals.

One more thing . . . the same incident at Va.Tech also occured five years ago. A gunman came into the classroom and started shooting. Two of the students, a boy and a girl, ran out to their cars and got their guns and came back in and shot the gunman. He killed five before they were able to shoot him.
Since that time, the law was passed prohibiting guns on campus, thus, during this recent incident, no one had a gun to fight back. The gunman had several hundred rounds of ammo that and he could have gone down the hall shooting many more students if he had not decided to shoot himself. If the students had been allowed to have guns on campus, maybe just one bullet going back to the gunman would have saved a lot of lives.

Perry got something right! I have know HUNDREDS of gun owners all my 53 years of life, and none of them have ever shot anybody. It's not the guns that kill, it's people. Limit guns, the bad guys will still get them and the innocent will be left defenseless.

GO AHEAD PUT A SIGN SAYING "NO GUNS ALLOWED" AND YOU'LL MARK YOURSELF/BUSINESS FOR THE NUTS OF THE WORLD TO UNLOAD

A sign won't stop anyone who wants to kill. And as for people carrying guns ANYWHERE they want to ....Some peopole are not doing too good of a job controlling themselves as they are driving cars. What prevents a person with a mental background check from becoming enraged and shooting at random in the same way they get road rage?

I own guns, and I am glad I have them. Never had to shoot anyone, yet, but came close to it when someone tried to break through my backdoor. Being a single woman in this world, it is my only protection out here in the country, besides my dog, who I must admit wouldn't hurt a fly, but he's a great warning alarm for me. Yippie, Perry and I see eye to eye on something.

It's the nutty people in the world who shouldn't own a gun, but as you see by the news reports, they do. It hasn't been that long ago that hunters had gun racks in the back of their pickup trucks. Now adays, if a kid went to school with a rifle displayed in his truck, he would be arrested. Times have changed, and not for the better. We do have a right to bear arms, people kill people, not guns.

After the Virginia Tech massacre, the reporters kept asking “how could this have been prevented?” very simple, if the students were trained, licensed and armed then the “bad Guy” would have been stopped long before he was able to kill 30+ and wounded many more innocent unarmed students.

Mark this day in history.... The first day ever that a politician has suggested something that ACTUALLY makes sense... You Go, Mr. Perry!

Carrying a gun is a wonderful priveledge.
Allows me the ability to protect myself and my family if ever necessary. In this

day and time I believe that taking the course, should be required of everyone that

wants to possess and carry a gun. Once taken, and only then, to allow those that

pass the course... be able to purchase and carry a gun.

Weed out the criminal. Take care of our Homes and our families and our freedom.

It would be such a better way to do a more extended background check. Filter out

those that have no business to have one in their possession and it would help those

that do qualify to be better apt to protect themselves and others around them from

those that have no right to carry and or use one against others.
I am thankful I have the RIGHT to carry arms, i am trained and i am aware of my

surroundings.
I am thankful to have my gun. It is a right that all persons willing to learn the

proper care and use of a gun should have.

ThankYouGovernorPerry!

I don't want guns carried everywhere by people who might go off their nut and shoot innocent people. If my child were at a mall he would have less chance getting shot if one person pulled out a gun and started shooting randomly until he ran out of bullets vs. if one person pulled out a gun and 50 others pulled out their guns to shoot back. Plus it seems the police are held to a higher account when carrying a gun than some person with a license to carry a concealed gun. All it would take is for someone to get shot in the cross fire of a gun battle for people to understand. It's a license to kill when you get people carrying guns EVERYWHERE. Your home is a different mattter altogether.

This whole notion is retarded. I wonder if Gov. Perry would feel totally comfortable giving his little "speeches" in front of an audience where everyone is packing heat??

How 'bout the next time he gives a speech trying to justify giving all those HPV vaccines out, let every speech goer be locked and loaded.....

See if Perry stands front and center - or behind a foot-thick piece of Kevlar.

Hmmmmm.................

Hind sights 20/20. If teachers at VA. TECH were able to carry CONCELLED weapons it might have been a different outcome.

Yeah and if all the students could have carried a gun it might have been a different outcome too.
