The debate over immigration reform is going on in the U.S. Senate, with many Americans seeming to tell Congress, "just do something!"

One survey (CBS News/New York Times) says 62% of Americans believe illegal immigrants who have lived and worked here for at least 2 years should be given a chance at legal status.

But another survey (Rasmussen Reports) says far more of us oppose than favor the plan (48% against - 26% in favor).

The fact is that many of us are not clear about the proposals in Congress.

Here is a pretty good explanation from McClatchy Newspapers on the provisions of the bill.  The White House refuses to call the "path to citizenship" an amnesty proposal.  Many critics say that's exactly what it is.

What almost everyone agrees on: the border should be strengthened to stop (or at least slow) future illegal immigration and that employers should face serious penalties for employing illegal immigrants.  The tough question is what to do with the millions of people here already.

So we'll pose the question to you:

Should illegal immigrants who have no criminal records and good work history be allowed to work toward legalization and citizenship?  Under the proposal they would be required to pay fines (but not back taxes).

Oh, and by the way, have you bothered to let your Senators and Member of Congress how you feel?

I think they should be allowed to work toward citizenship - but I also think they should be required to pay back-taxes AND fined for laws that were broken.

That is what any of us would have to do. We can't get a "clean slate" wiped for us for breaking any laws or not paying taxes in the past.

About the "let your Senators and Congressmen know".... Um..... yeah. And get that blanket-letter of a response which is indicative that they didn't even READ your letter.

I can't tell you how many times I have written - but I can tell you how many times I received a response that was indicative of my letter being read - ZERO.

Their paycheck is going in the bank - why do they have to listen to us or respond to our questions or suggestions? All they have to do is promise to do that while running for re-election.

"Should illegal immigrants who have no criminal records and good work history be allowed to work toward legalization and citizenship?"

NO. They can't come here by following OUR LAW.. NO.
This bill is a travesty of justice which our law makers and President, refuse to see, understand or don't care. It's amnesty. The people do NOT want any more amnesty.

Of course, I contact them.. call, email, write. We get the usual 'standard reply' in return. We're very disgusted with Kay B Hutchinson.

Tim, while I realize it's unrealistic to send back twelve million people, we also cannot continue to let our borders be welcome mats. We must close the border first. Then what needs to happen is that in order to get any sort of work visa, the person must provide a clear criminal history and background check. If they don't pass it, then back they go. If they do pass, they must be gainfully employed at the going wage. Part of the issue is that some businesses are hiring illegals off the books for lower than the going rate. This softens the wage tables and makes it hard for American workers to get jobs. And this isn't just an issue of manual labor. We had a long term substitute that had to be replaced because she was working on an expired green card. And I really really doubt that the workers that work for the service company of our district are here legally just due to some of the stories they tell.

Tim: Read this story from the San Antonio paper. I wish I knew how to put links in, but I will paste it below. It deals with how someone can get into the country from one of many countries that produce our more challenging terrorists. I thought it was very thought provoking and I would love to see this guy prominently interviewed on Fox.

Any other country in the world would round them up like cattle, and send them back to their country of orgin, or possibly to a jail, then back.
We're having to support the high dollar senators and congressmen that you talk of, it's one reason we can't afford to take on any more charity work.
The senators and congressmen listening to us, that went out with bell bottoms ! All they care about is re-election and more money in their pockets.

In my opinion, our congressmen and senators are NOT listening to the voice of America. If we are going to continue to let illegals in our country then stop the "free lunch". Stop it on the ones that are already here too. If they want to work here then get legal and make stiffer requirements/laws apply. Completely SHUT DOWN big businesses that import them for cheap labor...not just slap them on the hand and let "business as usual" continue.

Basically I agree with what TruBlu says.

This new bill is amnesty no matter what you call it. There's no way around it that I can see. You've got to be realistic here. There's no way you're going to round up 20 million illegals and put them on a bus and send them back. No one is going door to door to check on their status. It's not going to happen!!!

The new bill does require the securing of our borders. That has to be the first step and we can't do anything until we do that. No one without proper credentials will be allowed in.

The bill calls for two things to happen with the illegals already here. First, if any illegal commits a crime, even DUI, he gets deported immediately. Second, no more welfare. No more free services. They have to be registered, have to have a job, and have to work and pay taxes like everybody else. There's no way the IRS is going to collect back taxes. They don't even do that on the people who are legit. And there's no way that those people are going to have the money to pay fines. I just don't see it.

But, this bill needs to pass. It will secure our borders and give us a start towards controlling the illegals. If we don't pass this bill, there will be 10 million more illegals in the next 5 years and it will be a lot worse for America.

A definite no!

If an illegal alien(s) is discovered in this country they should be deported.

That being said, since this is a political issue the government is going to do what it wants to do.

If we don't like it, then it is time to change who is running this show

Tim
I do not have any trouble with immigrants. They are trying to have a better life. If the government or the people really want to stop illegal alien all they to do is to pass a law that if you hire an immigrants that has enter the USA illegal they you get a 1 year in prison. But that will never happen because the people passing the laws would not be able to hire cheap labor.

This is just crazy!
These people come here illegally which is a crime.
We all came from somewhere, and went thru the proper channels to be come americans.
We all learned to speak English.
Why do these illegals think the can circumvent the system that worked for us and our ancestors?
Every time someone stands up and says enough, they protest, and no one wants to be a racist.
I have no problem with folks coming here legally and becoming americans.
I welcome them with open arms, in English.

Wake up America!

All I'm going to say is....

IF YOU ARE GOING TO COME TO THE USA, DO IT RIGHT, GO THROUGH THE PROPER CHANNELS!

LEARN ENGLISH! THIS IS AMERICA, WE SPEAK ENGLISH! WE DON'T GO TO MEXICO & EXPECT THEM TO KNOW ENGLISH.

AGAIN, MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT AGAINST IMMIGRANTS... ALL WE ARE SAYING IS DO IT THE RIGHT WAY, LEGAL!

OH... ONE MORE THING.... GET A JOB, & QUIT EXPECTING OUR GOVERNMENT TO PAY FOR YOU. IF YOU ARE LEGAL, & WORKING, & STILL HAVE FINANCIAL PROBLEMS, THEN GO AFTER GOVT. HELP. DON'T COME TO THE USA, & DECIDE YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORK, BECAUSE YOU CAN GET FOODSTAMPS, MEDICAL CARE, & HELP WITH HOUSING.
