Beth and I are childless - for a week. Our oldest is a camp counselor and #2 is at that camp this week. In a few months he will be a high school senior.  Looming on the horizon: empty nest-hood, the next stage of marriage.

For so long (20 years) our lives have been focused on kids.  Now, we realize, it's time to start focusing on each other again!  I'm looking forward to it.

Okay, don't get me wrong, I'm not looking forward to our two wonderful children leaving.  I AM excited about a new phase in our relationship.

I found no shortage of advice for us on the web, like this article from WebMD.  The "experts" say to plan for it, talk about it and enjoy it.  If you've been there and done that, what's your advice?

My wife and I will be empty nesters this August when our youngest heads off to Stephen F. Austin. We'll miss her but we can't wait! At least we're still young enough to enjoy ourselves. :)

my gosh, this isn't like planning for WW2 (lol).

We found nothing to plan for, a day or two of tears when the youngest daughter got married (she insisted on living with the new hubby, go figure!) After 2 days of tears, I realized, we had an additional room and full bath! I've been OK sense. :)

Beth must be overjoyed!!

JUST KIDDING, TIM!!

This is the time when we all get to take pride in our efforts to "raise 'em right". Until you cut them loose, you never really know how they'll do. Moms sob and reluctantly "let go". Dads try to show pride and bravary, but deep down inside their guts are churning....especially for their daughters. Daughters tend to be closer to Mom as they reach this age, and sons tend to make a pretty clean break from both parents.

We hate to admit it, but they adjust very quickly, make a bazillion new friends and life is good.

You just hope and pray for their safety above all else, and before ya' know it, they're home for semester break and the holidays.

I'll be gutting and redoing her bathroom Char but it'll be great soon. It's amazing what 2 girls can do to a bathroom after just a few years. LOL

You're so right Keller. We're really proud of both of them. It'll be great seeing Brit for the holidays. In the mean time we're going to be golfing and fishing again.

I am having enough issues trying to teach mine to drive. I am petrified of the empty nest thing......

Is there a pause button somewhere I missed?

We are also starting the empty nest syndrome. It's so early in the process that we still like to sit down in our matching recliners, look at each other, smile and say "listen". Then we break up laughing because it's absolutely silent with nobody bickering, demanding or needing or attention.

Next we'll change the locks to avoid babysister's warning and then start going out to eat a little early to take advantage of the senior specials.

Officially we will be empty nesters in August-although our youngest is staying a year to attend junior college here. Two good things about kids moving out-especially once they are out of dorms and in apartments.
1. You can get rid of old furniture. I managed to get rid of couches and get new ones. I expect to do that with my dining room table as well. Bonus!
2. They can take ALL of their boxed up high school stuff WITH THEM. I have gained a reading room/guest room and my husband now has a Drum Room (don't ask...) It's not that we don't welcome them back-because they are here every week or so, but it is nice to have some space...
