TX-DOT says it's running out of money for highway construction projects across the state. The problem, the legislature has allowed money from the gasoline tax to be diverted to other uses.

There's a $6 billion backlog of projects that it cannot afford to pay for.  In recent years, it's delayed many repair and construction projects.

In November, Texas voters will be asked to allow the state to borrow more money, as most states already do, to fun projects.

One possible solution: building more toll roads.  In the last session of the legislature, however, a freeze was put on new tollroad projects.

The problem is especially bad in major urban areas where construction costs are higher and the traffic is growing worse by the day.

Like all of us who are on a family budget, the state faces choices: either cut spending (leaving us in gridlock) or raise more money (with higher taxes or tolls!)  No easy choices, I'm afraid!

Why doesn't the dollar per pack on cigarettes go to make up the extra needed ?

Guess they'll have to add five dollars per pack !

This country is getting worse than Russia !

They should use the money that is going to remodel the Governor's mansion, I'm sure there's enough in that slush "fun" !

My taxes already paid for the roads to be built and I'll be danged if I pay a additional toll just to drive on it.
Why do you think there aren't nearly as many people using them now?

Go ahead and build/make a toll road. You can guarantee I won't be driving on it. I don't care if the alternitive takes me another 30min...the gas I use versus the $3 in toll fees is still less. My budget is stretched enough due to gas, why would I pay more for a stupid toll?

Tax alcohol. At least with higher liquor prices, maybe some drunks won't be able to afford it and drunk driving may decrease. We've already taxed one bad and unhealthy habit...let's tax the other.

We'll maybe we won't have to worry about this Trans-continental corridor the Govenor wants so badly built. This monster is rediculous we don't need it just adds to more pollution. Just my thought.Truck drivers go around toll roads they have to be penny pinchers too.

Tim,

How much of our tax dollars have they spent to re-model the Governor's mansion?

How much of our tax dollars have they spent for rent on the house he is staying in while the work on the mansion is completed?

It makes me MAD AS HELL to see how our goverment spends our money for there own personal gain. While the rest of us tax payers have to drive on these worn out highways that they want to charge us extra to drive on.

If I ran my business and household like our government does they wouldn't have any tax money money to spend. I have to use common sense when spending my money or the state comptrollers office will come after me.

Rick Perry is just another fine example of a typical politition in the way he allows tax dollars to be spent. If the money for highways hadn't been spent for other things then we would have enough money to fix our highways.

We may not be able to do anything about this type of stupidity from our heads of government, but at least I feel better by voicing my opinion.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

I'm with Shell, lay more taxes on alcohol. Those of us that smoke are tired of drunks getting left out of the tax hikes, let them pay for our Traitor Governor's screw ups.

They need someone to budget the State's money that has a clue what a real budget is. None of the people in office have a clue what it is to have to scrimp and save just to make rent and bills, mush less to put food on the table and put gas in the car. They could care less what the rest of us have to do to get by, they just take our money and do whatever they can to put more in their pockets.

To Tim:

I saw the most stupiest FEDEX commercial yesterday:
A fedex truck gets stuck in the mud. So the driver calls back at headquarters to make a report of being stuck in the mud.
So the dispatcher hails a cab to the rescue. The dispatcher picks up all the parcels from the truck stuck in the mud. They load the cab down with parcels.
Then the cab drive back to headquarter with parcles stuck out the windown. The dispatcher never pays for the cab fair.
It was that easy to hail a cab. Not around here. "All the cabbies speak a foreign lanuage!"

Tim,

You just had to get me started, didn't ya!

I'm still MAD AS HELL, Perry just wakes up one morning as says "Hey we don't have enough momey to fix the highways, gee where did it go"

These kind of problems don't just happen over night. It is called poor planing or no planing. The same thing happens at my business when I fail to keep up with my responsiblities.

Just a thought here:

When I rent a house, I have to pay for it out of my own paycheck. Why are we paying his rent?

When we remodeled our 1700 sq. ft. home, we still lived in it, but they can't live in the guest house at the governor's mansion or in one of the wings while the work is being done?

We paid for the governor's mansion. He should live in it and if he does not like it, he should be paying for where ever else he lives.

Yes lets all go move in with the governor. There is plenty of bedroom space. I could run around in the front yard be the big guard kitty

Maybe we should send a citizen delegation to Chicago. Their tollways are endless, expensive and constantly under repair. In fact when we went this summer, we couldn't find a toll booth to make change, and the amount was scrawled in marker above the basket. On the other hand, tollways here seem to be better maintained and less traveled. Of course if they really REALLY wanted to push for mass transit and carpool use, they could make Central and I35 into tollroads. Can you imagine the logjam?

Are you stinkin kidding me?!?!?! How in the world can TXDOT be running out of money? So many people drive up and down the Dallas Tollway and the George Bush. The booth's range from $.40 to $.75 and there are several of them. It cost me a fortune to drive to and from work all week long between the high gas and the stinking toll booth's. Plus not to mention to traffic because of people making change and not having toll passes. So your solution is more toll roads...but doesn't that mean construction which COST'S MONEY? WOW. Who was behind this brain storming session?

Cowboys. Dallas has an offensive line that has been wearing down defenses all season, but we dedcided to get into a quarterback shoot out with a 3 time superbowl winner. We need to give Romo more time to grow. The way to beat a Brady or Manning is to keep them off the field.
We need to establish a solid running game against teams with high powered offenses, and we have the line to do it.
