Paul Campaign Never Ended, Spokesman Says

By Garance Franke-Ruta

As the Democratic presidential candidates held pre-primary rallies yesterday in Indiana and North Carolina, and presumptive Republican nominee John McCain spoke to the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, another major-party presidential candidate continued his own quest for nomination, headlining a "Freedom Rally" on a Fort Wayne, Ind., university campus.

Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) told supporters in early March, through a Web video, that he knew he was no longer in the running for the presidency, and aides said his campaign would be "winding down." But it turns out Paul never stopped running for president.

"He put out a video in which he said victory in the conventional sense was not available to us, but there was still much the campaign could try to accomplish," Ron Paul 2008 spokesman Jesse Benton said yesterday. "People in the press reported that as him dropping out when he was not dropping out."

Paul's campaign has shrunk from a high of more than 150 staffers before Super Tuesday on Feb. 5 to around 15, according to Benton, and his record-breaking Internet fundraising operation has turned off its online ticker. But with more than $4 million in cash on hand, his campaign says there is no good reason to stop.

He is still racking up votes, for one thing, having garnered 16 percent of the vote in Pennsylvania's Republican primary on April 22. And his supporters are still active at the grass-roots level: GOP officials abruptly canceled the Nevada state convention when it became clear that Paul's backers outnumbered those for McCain and stood ready to take control of the delegate process.

Paul's campaign hopes to turn such support into upward of 50 delegates for the party's national convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul in September, where he is gunning for a speaking slot.

There's also the matter of Paul's book. "The Revolution: A Manifesto" hit stores on April 30. His campaign is prohibited from selling it, but a continued presence on the speaking circuit is sure to stoke sales. (The book debuted at No. 1 on Amazon.com's "Hot New Releases in Books.")

The former Libertarian Party nominee has "no plans and no intentions" to switch to any other party when the time comes to end his bid, Benton said.

"If it was just for the presidency, it would have ended a long time ago," says supporter Tom Martin, 50, a database administrator from State College, Pa. "The idea was to reinvigorate the Republican Party back to its principles and, more than that, to reinvigorate the American people back to its principles."

Paul has many good, solid idea, but I think his view of the war, all wars we've fought are might need to fight, is screwy.

I agree 100%. I like a lot of his rhetoric though - then he says something too wacky for even me.

It's a sad commentary when people believe a candidate is "wacky" because he follows the Constitution to the strictest letter of the law.

He's wacky because he doesn't see the need to fight the evil that is attacking this country.

Here's the first paragraph of his stance on the war in Iraq:

"The United States invaded Iraq under false pretenses without a constitutionally-required declaration of war. Our Founders understood that how we go to war is as important as when we go to war, which is why they vested the power to declare war in the Legislative Branch. The resolution passed in Congress authorizing the president to use force in Iraq said nothing about the U.S. Constitution, but it mentioned the United Nations a dozen times. The United States should never go to war to enforce UN resolutions!"

I just don't see "wacky" anywhere.

The false pretenses you speak of weren't believed to be false and the idea that they were false is still up for debate. I agree with the UN resolution enforcement bit - but anyone can see that pulling out now would leave that entire part of the world up for grabs - what a scary thought!

Here is a breakdown of the nineteen hijackers:

Fifteen were from Saudi Arabia
Two were from United Arab Emirates
One from Egypt
One from Lebanon

ZERO from Iraq.

We lost focus on the war on terrorism when we turned it into the Iraq war.

""The United States invaded Iraq under false pretenses"

A TOTAL LOAD OF WHACK. Nothing "illegal"... just doing as we said we'd do. You really need to get better info.

You DO realized that the Iraq war never 'ended' in the 90's? That it was a cease fire contingent upon Iraq's meeting specifics? It did not, so the UN mandate was ENFORCED.

"You really need to get better info."- This info was directly from the Ron Paul website. But I'm sure you know more about the Constitution that Senator Ron Paul.

Just curious, where did you got your Constitutional Law degree from?

What does his web site have to do with anything. We, as a nation, have to fight wars & protect this nation & it's citizens. Paul isn't willing to do that. That is unacceptable in a Sen. and a disqualifier in a president. Why do you think he LOST so badly.
LOL I don't need a law 'degree'... just some good knowledge and common sense. You think our founders didn't expect we'd have to fight wars? seesh

He didn't say he wouldn't go to war- he just stated the steps outlined in the Constitution weren't followed.

"What does his web site have to do with anything"- this blog is about Ron Paul. Try to follow along; it really isn't that hard.

"You think our founders didn't expect we'd have to fight wars?"- second sentence of the Ron Paul paragraph covered this.

Do you have a problem reading or just comprehension?

Okay you missed something - Ron Paul is a CONGRESSMAN (not a Senator). You were giving him too much credit. Also, Ron Paul's website isn't the end-all on information. Is he on the armed services committee? Does he have information not available to the public?

I have already said that I do like some things about Ron Paul and I prefer him to the crooks currently running, but he is dead wrong on the Iraq thing. Saddam was paying families of suicide bombers, allowing terrorist training in his country, gassing his own people.

Good point, Texan. Saddam had a standing policy of providing Palestinian terrorists $25K for each suicide bombing.

What those on the left love to whistle right past is the fact that we broke Iraq (with help from the votes of your current Democratic leadership, by the way) and have an obligation to leave that country in some semblance of stability. Pull out? Why not? But do it with responsible thought for what we leave behind.

TI, Got me on the senator thing; I had a brain fart.
As far as everything else, we'll just have to disagree. Not much use debating our differences on this subject; he doesn't have a chance. Now were stuck with one of the other three wonderful choices.

True true cbfan - 3 beautiful globalist Soros funded crooks.

The only way America is going to survive as we know it is to secure our borders (not just from the south - BOTH of them) and send everyone that is here illegally to the back of the line in their own country. I'm talking about the illegal Chinese, the illegal Iranians, and yes, the illegal Mexicans. I am not saying those are the only 3 groups here either. Clean your own house first, then help others.
