I cannot tell you how much I admire Avery Johnson. It would have been so easy to blame everything from the weather to the players for the Mavs loss. But he understands what President Truman expressed when he put the sign on the presidential desk saying "the buck stops here." A real man doesn't blame others, or expect others to make his life easier. He does his best, admits his mistakes and move on. In a world where people are so willing to sue to justify their own personal shortcomings, hearing a decent, mature man take the blame for something that in reality was probably out of his control. I guess that is why I get so aggravated with the accuse and sue segment of society that would rather whine to the media than do what they can to change the situation. I am sure next year, whatever mistake Mr. Johnson thinks he personally made, it won't happen again. Too many of us are unwilling to accept that lesson. Good luck next year Mavs. And God bless Avery Johnson.

Please read the whole thing again-perhaps more slowly so you read all the words. What I said was that in a world where so many people are ready to blame others, this excellent man chose to look in the mirror and shoulder blame whether he deserved to or not. And that in my book makes him a hero.

ok, i read the whole thing again, does that make you feel better? nothing changed, it's still a sport, there are no heros in sports, sports are played by athletes, sports are not the real world, it's a GAME.

Hardly the first coach to do so (otherwise they'd lose their jobs all the quicker). Most good coaches will do the same at the end of the season if there's disappointment 9to keep their job). In fact the coach is expected to do so. Seldom have I heard a coach say....'I did great those overpaid lazy bums didn't play'. Maybe that's actually what coaches NEED to be saying?

Hmm,....

I agree with you TruBlu. It took a lot of heat off of Dirk and a few others that didn't perform as well as might be expected. Yes, Hbilly, it is a game, but standing up and being a man about things is applicable to ALL things we do in life.

in life when you except responsibility things happen that affect yours and other people's lifes. in sports when you accept "responsibilty" a point gets put up on the board, people can really live without that , scotty, so sports don't reflect life.

in life if you don't get the job done , you could get fired , somebody else doesn't stand up for you and take the heat and call it being a man (dirk)

and ryngwrath covered the situation quite well, i suggest reading that real slow so you can read all the words, so actually by standing up and covering for failure you actually take a step back

bottom line , mavs got their butt beat

I disagree Hbilly. People in sports (which like it or not, is real life) that fail to perform don't stay around very long. You said in real life when you don't get the job done there's no one to stand up for you. Again, I disagree, there is your co-workers or the Union, but you're right, not always. I don't see where anyone covered for failure anyways. Someone has to win and someone has to lose. The problem rests with fickle fans who are so spoiled they accept nothing short of winning 100% of the time.

Look the Mavericks choked plain and simple... and one has to disect what happened. What happened Dirk decided he wasnt going to show up for the series... Dont know why.. but that is something he will have to reason wuth.>And as far as Avery Johnson goes well if you are a coach and you cant motivate your players during a crucial playoff series than what good are you as a coach? I lived in Chicago for over 30 yrs... I saw what happens when teams are consistantly bad.. and what can happen when a team hits greatness.. Like the Chicago Bulls of the 90's. Let me tell you the difference between the Bulls of the 90's and the Mavericks of today... When the Bulls played they played their hearts out..Phil Jackson is and was a very good motivator. Micheal Jordan Scottie Pippen Bill Paxson as well as TOny Kukoc and Bill Cartwright were the WHOLE team!! there werent any individulas.. the WHOLE team played and they played very well winning 6 Championships.. as far as the MAvericks go they arent playing like a team they are playing every man for himself.. So when you play by yourself thats exactly what you get a individual effort that in most cases causes defeat.. I dont think the MAvericks will win a CHampionship until they play like a TEAM!!

You're right, txhank, but I would like to make one observation. Even the Bulls team that won all of those championships was kocked out in the first round a couple of times before they went on to greatness (the best of al time as far as I'm concerned). Expect to see Terry to get the boot and Cuban to pick up a ferocious, bad boy point guard. People expect too much from their teams. That's why I like baseball a lot, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes it rains. In the end, Dirk has to GET TOUGH, both physically and mentally.

Sometimes it takes the sting of REALLY losing to make players realize that they can't just phone it in.

I am a teacher, a mother and wife and I like to think I am a pretty good citizen. I read ALOT. I also write a good deal on various blogs. I appreciate a chance to respond to what we see in the news. I think that by posting our opinions we can probably find that everyone is more alike than we are willing to admit. Face it, people just like to argue. I would also like to say how much I appreciate having a forum for my views.
